Transient increase in systolic and diastolic arterial blood pressures, and brady cardia with atrioventricular block (A-V) were induced by xylazine. Bradycardia and A-V block were prevented by injection of atropine sulfate. In one horse, A-V block was present before treatment and the frequency of occurrence was increased signifificantly by the administration of xylazine. Blood pressure which initially increased tended to decrease to less than control values. There was no significant change in the partial pressure of blood gases or in the blood pH during the study period (60 minutes after administration of xylazine) .Atropine sulfate should be administered before xylazine is given. It is desirable to use xylazine more carefully to the horse which has some abnormality in E.C.G..","PeriodicalId":128555,"journal":{"name":"The Japanese Journal of Veterinary Anesthesiology","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125231849","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Six heifers were equally divided into two groups. The animals were given 30 ml/kg of either RG or HG (20ml/kg/hr), and were monitored for 360 min after the initiation of fluid replacement. The RG and HG infusion induced an increase in relative plasma volume (rPV), reaching 124.6±12.1 % and 133.2±10.4 % at the end of fluid replacement. No changes were seen in the arterial pressure or plasma osmotic pressure. Infusion of RG induced diluted acidification, resulting from significant decreases in venous blood pH (-0.068), bicarbonate (-2.67 mmol/l) and base excess concentrations (-3.67 mmol/l) compared to pre infusion values. No significant changes were observed in these parameters in the HG group ; HG infusion inhibited diluted acidification. Thus, it appears that 30 ml/kg of hypotonic solution at a flow rate of 20 ml /kg/hr can be safely infused into cattle. Infusion of HG may be more beneficial than RG for rehydrating cattle with metabolic acidosis.","PeriodicalId":128555,"journal":{"name":"The Japanese Journal of Veterinary Anesthesiology","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122487195","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
