In order to maintain the image’s original aspect ratio when adjusting for a different media, some level of cropping may be required, but the automatic zoom and crop method may not produce satisfactory results regarding image contents. This paper proposes an automatic method that analyses images and estimates the relevant content areas, avoiding distortions and main subject chopping. The analysis is performed by four feature extractors, each producing a grayscale image which indicates relevant image areas. The outputs of these extractors are then combined by means of a Genetic Algorithm (GA) optimization. Experiments involving a subjective evaluation of a set of automatically cropped images have shown that 77% of the 35 human observers considered images adjusted by the proposed approach better than or similar to the outputs of the automatic zoom and crop method.","PeriodicalId":128396,"journal":{"name":"2010 Sixth International Conference on Signal-Image Technology and Internet Based Systems","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128445814","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Unfortunately, formulating library queries that match the rigid keywords chosen by the Library of Congress in library records to retrieve relevant results can be difficult. In solving this problem, we have developed a library search engine, called EnLibS, which allows library patrons to post a query Q with commonly-used words and ranks the retrieved library records according to their degrees of resemblance with Q. To evaluate the performance of EnLibS, it is imperative to conduct a thorough assessment. However, this performance evaluation cannot be conducted due to the lack of benchmark datasets and standardized metrics. To address this issue, in this paper we introduce an evaluation framework which (i) statistically determines the size of a test dataset, (ii) includes a controlled experiment that employs technically-sound approaches for calculating the ideal number of appraisers and queries to be used in the experiment, and (iii) establishes standard metrics for evaluating a library search engine. The proposed evaluation model can be applied to assess the performance of library search engines in (i) reducing the number of keyword queries that retrieve no results, (ii) obtaining high precision in retrieving and accurately ranking relevant library records, and (iii) achieving an acceptable query processing time. We present a case study in which we apply the proposed evaluation framework on the library search engine at Brigham Young University and EnLibS to assess, compare, and contrast their performance.","PeriodicalId":128396,"journal":{"name":"2010 Sixth International Conference on Signal-Image Technology and Internet Based Systems","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130012781","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Head Related Transfer Function (HRTF) based sound rendering techniques, which seek to create a realistic virtual auditory space for listeners, have become a prominent concept in human robot interaction. Applications that demand high quality 3D sound synthesis are usually based on measured HRTFs of listeners. Recently, researchers propose to construct a set of personalized HRTFs using multiple linear regression models between anthropometric data and measured HRTFs, which implies the existence of a training HRTF dataset together with the corresponding anthropometric data. This paper focuses on the measurement of Head-Related transfer Functions (HRTFs) and the corresponding anthropometric data of a listener. Several state-of-the-art techniques of measuring the HRTFs are described. For measuring the anthropometric data, we develop a low budget approach, which enables us to measure the anthropometry of a person within short time at a high accuracy, whereas the hardware costs for the scanning system are significantly reduced.","PeriodicalId":128396,"journal":{"name":"2010 Sixth International Conference on Signal-Image Technology and Internet Based Systems","volume":"92 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122887261","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to manual process, a real-time system for star fruit color maturity inspection is developed in this paper. In real-time application, most of the image acquisition device is using YCbCr color space data such as CCD camera. This paper presents the modification on the previous star fruit color maturity classification algorithm which is based on RGB color space into YCbCr color space. In this new modified algorithm, the system is faster than before because the star fruit maturity classification process operates without any mathematical operation involved in the feature extraction process. This process is possible as the color information can be obtained directly from the Cb and Cr component which is not the case in the RGB color space. Based on the experiment results, the classification accuracy for the modified algorithm is 96%.","PeriodicalId":128396,"journal":{"name":"2010 Sixth International Conference on Signal-Image Technology and Internet Based Systems","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133297500","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We have to build project memories that not only simply archive previous project solutions but that document the reasons why these solutions were chosen. These reasons have to show experts skills, document the representation of treated problems and the decision context, etc. This study presents a way to analyze mediated discussions using a discussion forum. We use pragmatic analysis in order to identify criteria that help to analyze coordination messages in design projects. These plates contain nonstandard characters such as italic, cursive and connected letters, which most plate recognition systems are unable to recognize. We propose a technique using stroke extraction and analysis to recognize these nonstandard characters. The proposed technique first extracts the contour of the character and then the stroke direction which are used for classification. The advantage of this method is that the system requires no training. From the experiments performed, the method has a correct recognition accuracy of 95% and even works with standard car plates.","PeriodicalId":128396,"journal":{"name":"2010 Sixth International Conference on Signal-Image Technology and Internet Based Systems","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115970832","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is intended for the efficient management of multi-version maps, where each version is a result of some kinds of modifications at a given point of time. A structure, that is based on quad trees and that is capable of representing the differences between and the different versions of the same spatial object, is introduced. It minimizes redundant data and reduces the amount of storage required. The general framework and the specification of the proposed structure are elaborated. The versioning aspect of the proposed structure is introduced in a temporal context where a data of a given version is defined in terms of its timestamp creation and its timestamp deletion. The proposed structure provides greater flexibility in manipulating the latest version as well as the different past stored version.","PeriodicalId":128396,"journal":{"name":"2010 Sixth International Conference on Signal-Image Technology and Internet Based Systems","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129184805","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The transformation performs the change of a signal level by both inverting a bit and changing the level at random in a limited range. From the property analysis of the transformation, a perceptual model of two metrics of level distortion is assumed for evaluating a subjective visual quality of the transformed image. The measurements of image quality by the human subjective evaluation are analyzed and then, the evaluation function that can yield an estimate of the subjective visual quality from the two distortion measurements of the transformed image is determined. By using the evaluation function, every image region is transformed with its parameter adaptively changed so as to achieve a desired visual quality. The simulation results demonstrate the performance of the evaluation function and show a linear correlation between the evaluated values and the measurements of visual quality.","PeriodicalId":128396,"journal":{"name":"2010 Sixth International Conference on Signal-Image Technology and Internet Based Systems","volume":"36 2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132132564","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Conventionally, web text documents are represented by term frequency matrix for classification purpose. However, considering the limitations of representing documents using terms or keywords, we propose to represent web pages using information extraction patterns that are identified within the pages respectively. In this paper, we present the results as well as the findings obtained from our preliminary experiments. Our experimental results indicate that the existence of a word in different contexts has different impact to the classification task. Thus, the extraction patterns used to represent each document are more semantically meaningful and give better insight to web classification in comparison with keywords.","PeriodicalId":128396,"journal":{"name":"2010 Sixth International Conference on Signal-Image Technology and Internet Based Systems","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130275557","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
