In considering this young party’s recent development, researchers\u0000have focussed on its rhetorical strategies (i.e., populism) and its radicalization.\u0000Until now, much less attention has been paid to antisemitism within the AfD—\u0000also because the party would prefer to keep this out of public debate. By\u0000investigating its treatment of antisemitism, Nazism, and the politics of remembrance,\u0000it can be shown that the AfD has the features of a far-right party, to a\u0000much clearer extent than might be guessed from its media image, particularly\u0000inside Germany.

This article asks whether the AfD’s rise threatens to\u0000undermine the strategy of containment that contributed to the demise of previous\u0000incarnations of the radical right. It argues that the current strength of\u0000the AfD is a direct result of Angela Merkel’s decisions to rescue the Eurozone\u0000and to welcome over one million refugees since the fall of 2015. While the\u0000AfD is still likely to suffer a collapse similar to other radical right parties, its\u0000consolidation or strengthening would have major consequences for Germany\u0000and for Europe.

It\u0000depicts the ways in which sexual minorities articulated their policy preferences,\u0000the degree to which these positions were taken up in party platforms\u0000and electoral discourse, and the extent to which the resulting coalition agreement\u0000pledged to address queer citizens’ concerns. I argue that, as a result of\u0000what Sarah Childs and Mona Lena Krook call a critical actor, this election\u0000provided sexual minorities with a high degree of responsiveness on one core\u0000issue: marriage equality.
