These systems are appropriate for most common pedagogical approaches, but they are not suitable enough for collaborative and practice-based scenarios. EMLs were proposed several years ago in order to provide a general solution to this problem. Particularly, the well-known IMS learning design specification is intended to support the description or educational units in accordance with different pedagogies. Nevertheless, this language uniquely solves one part of the problem, as a corresponding LMS that process such descriptions is required. At this point the main concern is the large size of such a system, provoking high-development and maintenance costs. To solve this problem this paper introduces a modular-based LMS engine, based in a very structured EML, that facilitates the development of whole LMSs in an incremental and customized way.","PeriodicalId":128089,"journal":{"name":"2008 Eighth IEEE International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies","volume":"52 10","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114130362","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Students will be able to use this platform to attend lessons, to practice as part of their learning experience with a certain set of tools and, finally, to check their progress using rich tests including media contents to complement their learning. The researchers explore the most recent development Microsoft technologies to take advantage of the newest possibilities in the field of user experience and accessibility applied to educational purposes. As a result, the learning process experience is improved for the users, creating an e-learning ecosystem platform in which both students and teachers can create and share contents through the system, using standard types of documents.","PeriodicalId":128089,"journal":{"name":"2008 Eighth IEEE International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies","volume":"138 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122136357","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The new proposed modality implies the existence of a database with medical images and uses a modern querying method: content-based visual query. The testing method resides in choosing an image/region as query for which the system will return a number of images which are visually similar and could be relevant or non-relevant (belonging or not to the same diagnosis class). The student has to recognize the diagnosis and mark the relevant images. The option of visualizing the correct solution to the test helps the student to see what errors he made. This method offers the possibility to test the ability of the student in recognizing images that belong to the same diagnosis or which are similar but are associated to a different diagnosis. The teacher can determine the level of knowledge achieved by the student regarding a certain pathology and also in general, as well as the studentpsilas capacity to establish a correct diagnosis based on imagistic investigations frequently used in todaypsilas medical practice.","PeriodicalId":128089,"journal":{"name":"2008 Eighth IEEE International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies","volume":"140 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122165822","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Especially in a distance learning setting, ICT can be used to create effective courseware and learning environments that cater individual learning needs. While numerous technologies are available for the development of educational material, the use of technology should be driven by sound pedagogical principles. This paper discusses the development of courseware for a foundation course of a distance learning undergraduate computer science programme. It presents the design strategy that was followed for the development of learning material for a diverse group of adult students and shows how simple technologies can support pedagogical principles and create an effective learning environment.","PeriodicalId":128089,"journal":{"name":"2008 Eighth IEEE International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128432454","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

On of the challenges is to determine the size of a learning object and a necessary requirement for them to be shared across networks and reused in different learning environments. This paper proposes a model to overcome this challenge by suggesting designing learning objects based on concept and skill ontologies developed from K-12 curricula. By using the learning space as a metaphor, design granules of a learning object has been modeled by separating expectations as skills and concepts.","PeriodicalId":128089,"journal":{"name":"2008 Eighth IEEE International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies","volume":"101 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128607038","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
