This is known to cause significant additional costs on the system operation as guidelines and limits produced by off-line studies are conservative and hence economically inefficient. The additional operation costs can be minimised if the stability constraints could be assessed accurately on-line using real-time system information. This paper presents the development of a time domain simulation based assessment tool which could be used for on-line dynamic stability constraint assessment of large complex power systems.","PeriodicalId":127287,"journal":{"name":"DRPT2000. However, if it causes the line flows to exceed their limits, thus threatening the system security, the ISO makes decision on the curtailment of the contracted power. An optimal power flow (OFF) model has been presented in this paper to minimize the curtailment of the contracted powers in a power market having bilateral, multilateral as well as firm contracts. A strategy has been suggested for allocation of transmission losses among various market participants. Role of flexible AC transmission system (FACTS) devices on reducing the transmission congestion and curtailment of the contracted power has also been studied. The study has been conducted on a modified IEEE-14 bus system.","PeriodicalId":127287,"journal":{"name":"DRPT2000. The choice of SVC location and damping signal are based on both modal and sensitivity analyses. As the SVC instability is detected in the design process, the design (structure and setting) is achieved through a combined sensitivity coefficient (CSC) which automatically takes into account the damping of both the interarea and SVC modes. The setting is said to be optimal when the CSC with respect to all damping controller parameters approach zero. It is shown that if the SVC mode constraint is ignored, tuning the lead/lag settings for interarea mode damping alone can actually lead to adjustment in the wrong direction.","PeriodicalId":127287,"journal":{"name":"DRPT2000. However, in the past twenty years, new methods have been discussed, such as genetic algorithms, fuzzy methods and neutral network methods. Although the results are all quite good, we still want to find a new method to solve the VAr problem. Therefore, in this paper, we first present the GM(1,N) model, which is one of the most important topics in the grey system theory, to do the VAr planning in distribution feeders. After the model has been presented, we use a small system in the Taiwan Power System (Taipower System) as our example to implement the new method for VAr planning.","PeriodicalId":127287,"journal":{"name":"DRPT2000. Supplemental control design of static VAr compensators (SVCs) and static synchronous compensators (STATCOMs) using H/sub /spl infin// optimal control is investigated. Most of the work on STATCOM used EMTP or EMTDC or hardware model to study its performance. In this research, a computer program is developed based on MATLAB using Simulink to carry out the simulation. For the sake of comparison of SVC and STATCOM, the same system, location and contingency are used. The dynamic responses of the synchronous machines subjected to a three-phase fault are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the supplementary control of SVC and STATCOM. The results show that the proposed controller can provide better damping characteristics under all operating conditions.","PeriodicalId":127287,"journal":{"name":"DRPT2000. MGAM-MOL uses a merit order loading (MOL) solution as a base solution in order to reduce the micro genetic algorithm (MGA) search effort towards the optimal solution region. As transmission losses are included, the solutions are near the optimal solutions and are less expensive than those obtained from MGA, simple genetic algorithm (SGA), and MOLs especially for a large number of CC units, thereby leading to substantial fuel cost savings. Moreover, MGAM-MOL can easily facilitate the parallel implementation to reduce the computing expenses without sacrificing the quality of the solution.","PeriodicalId":127287,"journal":{"name":"DRPT2000. End user equipment is often more sensitive to disturbances that exist both on the supplying power system and within the customer facilities. Power quality embraces problems caused by harmonics, over or under-voltages, or supply discontinuities. Harmonics are caused by all sorts of nonlinear loads. In order to fully understand the problems caused by harmonics pollution, an effective means of identifying sources of power harmonics is important. The authors used fuzzy numbers for harmonics signature recognition. In this paper, the authors have made use of new developments in wavelets so that each type of current waveform polluted with power harmonics can well be represented by a normalised energy vector consisting of five elements. Furthermore, a mixture of harmonics load can also be represented by a corresponding vector. This paper describes the mathematics and algorithms for arriving at the vectors, forming a strong foundation for real-time harmonics signature recognition, in particular useful to the re-structuring of the whole electric power industry.","PeriodicalId":127287,"journal":{"name":"DRPT2000. This paper presents an effective simulation method for calculating the value of LOLP of a multi area system by considering uncertainties both on FOR and load forecasting. There are no exact values of LOLP in a random system, and therefore one has to evaluate its confidence interval. The interval estimate of LOLP gives the upper and lower values of LOLP, so that the LOLP lies between these limits with a specified probability. These upper and lower values of LOLP may be interpreted to be confidence limits on the expected value of LOLP. The simulation results were tested by statistical goodness-of-fit tests and the gamma distribution was found to provide a good fit to the data produced by the Monte Carlo simulations for the sample system.","PeriodicalId":127287,"journal":{"name":"DRPT2000. Therefore, the authors developed a new model by testing 2 different methods. The first method is based on a duplication of the variables technique, the second one is based on dynamic programming and an appropriate space-time decomposition. This appropriate decomposition is related to the physical process of advection via the use of characteristic curves. Finally, they compared both methods and selected the second one that provides the desired accuracy in the new context.","PeriodicalId":127287,"journal":{"name":"DRPT2000.
