Fault indicators can be installed either in substation or on pole/tower along the transmission line. This paper reviews the fault indicator applications both in transmission and distribution systems. Principles, merits and demerits of each fault location technique are discussed. Finally, this paper suggests an advanced fault indicator based on fault generated high frequency noise signal (FI-HF), which is mounted between earth wire and tower. Fault generated high frequency noise signal is captured by a special designed \"earth trap\" and stack tuner.","PeriodicalId":127287,"journal":{"name":"DRPT2000. The controller is shown to be robust, as the damping it introduces into the system is insensitive to changes in both the system topology/parameters and the pattern of network flows. Each individual controller contributes positively to the overall system damping with no undesirable interaction between controllers. These features should allow a decentralised approach to the design of the AVR+PSS. Such a design approach is compatible with the new competitive market structures and should result in savings on commissioning costs. Simulation results for a multi-machine power system confirmed that the controllers are effective in damping local and inter-area power swings.","PeriodicalId":127287,"journal":{"name":"DRPT2000. The choice of SVC location and damping signal are based on both modal and sensitivity analyses. As the SVC instability is detected in the design process, the design (structure and setting) is achieved through a combined sensitivity coefficient (CSC) which automatically takes into account the damping of both the interarea and SVC modes. The setting is said to be optimal when the CSC with respect to all damping controller parameters approach zero. It is shown that if the SVC mode constraint is ignored, tuning the lead/lag settings for interarea mode damping alone can actually lead to adjustment in the wrong direction.","PeriodicalId":127287,"journal":{"name":"DRPT2000. However, if it causes the line flows to exceed their limits, thus threatening the system security, the ISO makes decision on the curtailment of the contracted power. An optimal power flow (OFF) model has been presented in this paper to minimize the curtailment of the contracted powers in a power market having bilateral, multilateral as well as firm contracts. A strategy has been suggested for allocation of transmission losses among various market participants. Role of flexible AC transmission system (FACTS) devices on reducing the transmission congestion and curtailment of the contracted power has also been studied. The study has been conducted on a modified IEEE-14 bus system.","PeriodicalId":127287,"journal":{"name":"DRPT2000. This paper presents an effective simulation method for calculating the value of LOLP of a multi area system by considering uncertainties both on FOR and load forecasting. There are no exact values of LOLP in a random system, and therefore one has to evaluate its confidence interval. The interval estimate of LOLP gives the upper and lower values of LOLP, so that the LOLP lies between these limits with a specified probability. These upper and lower values of LOLP may be interpreted to be confidence limits on the expected value of LOLP. The simulation results were tested by statistical goodness-of-fit tests and the gamma distribution was found to provide a good fit to the data produced by the Monte Carlo simulations for the sample system.","PeriodicalId":127287,"journal":{"name":"DRPT2000. MGAM-MOL uses a merit order loading (MOL) solution as a base solution in order to reduce the micro genetic algorithm (MGA) search effort towards the optimal solution region. As transmission losses are included, the solutions are near the optimal solutions and are less expensive than those obtained from MGA, simple genetic algorithm (SGA), and MOLs especially for a large number of CC units, thereby leading to substantial fuel cost savings. Moreover, MGAM-MOL can easily facilitate the parallel implementation to reduce the computing expenses without sacrificing the quality of the solution.","PeriodicalId":127287,"journal":{"name":"DRPT2000. However, a problem emerges: traditional technologies cannot cope with large distribution automation systems based on heterogeneous sub-systems. To overcome this problem, the authors identify the need for systems integration, high-level co-operation protocols, and powerful and flexible, yet robust, models of interaction. They describe a system architecture for distribution automation composed of object-oriented agents developed in different environments, interconnected using CORBA (common object request broker architecture).","PeriodicalId":127287,"journal":{"name":"DRPT2000. This permits one to realize a new technology of load management providing consideration and minimization of diverse negative consequences of power and energy shortage allocation and creation of incentive influences for consumers. The solution of multicriteria problems is based on the Bellman-Zadeh approach to decision making in a fuzzy environment. The advantages and capabilities opened by its application are discussed. The results of the paper are realized within the framework of an adaptive interactive decision making system, which can be used in allocating diverse types of resources or their shortages.","PeriodicalId":127287,"journal":{"name":"DRPT2000. Transmission open access regulations establish that all the electrical market participants have the same rights to use the transmission facilities in the same conditions and only subject to operational restrictions (security levels, congestion, etc.). On the other hand, the transmission network users are responsible for the costs incurred for the wheeler in order to accommodate the transactions. However, how to charge the users for the transmission facilities in a fair way is still a problem to be properly resolved. A concomitant problem is how to define the fairness criteria to charge the users for these facilities. To deal with this problem, methodologies involving the application of game theory are studied. In competitive electricity markets, the participants need assistance on how to make decisions and with whom to form coalitions to optimise their costs. In this paper, two solution concepts of the cooperative game theory are introduced: the nucleolus and the Shapley value.","PeriodicalId":127287,"journal":{"name":"DRPT2000.
