Our results indicate: 1. The angular dependent part of the scattering coefficient is relatively constant over the small angles between 0-10 degrees. Thus we expect a small variation in the intensity of the scattered photons. 2. The amplitude dependent parts of the scattering coefficients which are functions of particle size and the index of refraction show cyclic resonance effects for large particles. 3. Comparing our results with known experimental work it can be concluded that Mie theory does not predict the scattering properties properly at smaller angles between 0-0.4 degrees.","PeriodicalId":126922,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE Southeastcon'99. An eigenvalue residuum-based criterion for the detection of the number of sinusoids in white Gaussian noise is introduced. We first consider the eigenvalues of a covariance matrix as a set of measured data, and then gradually rule out the small eigenvalues based on the proposed criterion until the final estimate is obtained. Simulation results show that the proposed method gives superior performance over the Akaike information criterion and the minimum description length principle, especially with a low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), short data records, and a high number of sinusoids. In addition, the implementation of the new criterion is simpler and faster.","PeriodicalId":126922,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE Southeastcon'99. Technology on the Brink of 2000 (Cat. These equations are simplified form multistage cascade S-parameter matrices. Excellent agreements between measurements and the computation results from the proposed equations with the S-parameters of components of a multistage cascaded cabling system are observed. These equations not only can reduce the computation burdens in comparison with traditional methods for S-matrix computations, but also can provide insights of the contributions of the S-parameters at each stage in the net crosstalk, return loss, and insertion loss of a cabling system. In addition, these equations can not only be used to compute the component specifications when the system performance is specified, but also can be used to obtain the de-embedded system characteristics by subtracting the known characteristic of the adapting components.","PeriodicalId":126922,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE Southeastcon'99. Compared with thermosets, thermoplastics offer excellent electrical properties, superior surface hardness, excellent dimensional stability and good chemical and heat resistance. This paper presents a Weibull statistical analysis of breakdown voltages of PET thermoplastics polyester cups used for encapsulating high voltage coils. The behavior of the polyester cups at DC and AC voltages and under dry and wet conditions is demonstrated. It was found in this work that the DC breakdown voltage of the polyester cups are much higher than the AC breakdown voltage under dry conditions. On the other hand, under wet conditions the DC breakdown voltage significantly decreased in comparison with the AC breakdown voltage. Moreover, it was found that the DC breakdown voltages are widely scattered in comparison with the AC breakdown voltages. It was also found that the statistical behavior of the DC breakdown voltages under wet conditions follow a mixed Weibull distribution. It is believed that this behavior is attributed to the presence of technical defects in some cups such as microvoids.","PeriodicalId":126922,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE Southeastcon'99. Algorithms such as principal components analysis (PCA) and decision trees (DT) have been applied to this problem with limited success, motivating our search for a better classifier. Since this is obviously a nonlinear classification problem, we applied two nonlinear techniques: independent component analysis (ICA) and support vector machines (SVMs). We evaluated these algorithms on a standard, publicly available data set using a variety of combinations of features. The optimally configured ICA and SVM systems achieved misclassification rates of 33.4% and 32.2% respectively. This is a significant improvement over the best results previously reported on this task: 36.6% for PCA and 43% for DT. Since ambiguity in the features space is a significant problem in this application, these results validate the effectiveness of nonlinear classification techniques.","PeriodicalId":126922,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE Southeastcon'99. This paper presents a new technique for dealing with the convergence problems that Newton-Ralphson based methods encounter. This method is based on an interior-point concept and an affine scaling used in the linear programming. Issues related to the implementation of the algorithm in the content of solving nonlinear equations are discussed. This algorithm is then compared to the Newton-Ralphson based solver currently used in some circuit simulators. Using various examples, the comparison shows improved convergence behavior using this algorithm.","PeriodicalId":126922,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE Southeastcon'99. One feature of RAISE is the interactive tutorial. Each tutorial is a series of HTML documents that includes JavaScript to allow for response to student input. A typical tutorial poses a problem to the student, then helps the student solve the problem by providing sequentially more specific hints. Student evaluations of the tutorials have been quite favorable. The framework of the tutorial is such that it works well for a wide variety of applications and disciplines. Development of new tutorials is therefore fast and easy, and requires only a rudimentary knowledge of HTML. This paper describes how the tutorial is constructed and how instructors can adapt it to support their classes.","PeriodicalId":126922,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE Southeastcon'99. In addition, most of these systems are also becoming programmable to increase the flexibility and adaptability of operation. These systems can not be easily tested or characterized at bench level testing. Sophisticated test equipment, personnel are needed. It is neither practical nor economical to have such sophisticated testing laboratories and procedures implemented every where. However, it is very practical, feasible, efficient if such testing activities are done at locations where the appropriate equipment and technical personnel available, and send the results of testing in near real time to remote locations for analysis and design changes. Proper fault tolerant and fast networking schemes are needed. Fortunately, with the advances in the network connectivity technologies such as: ISDN (integrated services digital network), frame relay, and ATM (asynchronous transfer mode), and Internet; and application platforms such as WWW (World Wide Web), RIAC can be implemented. At Florida International University, we are developing such a scheme using the industry standard GPIB (General Purpose Interface Bus) based instrumentation, and the ISDN/Internet based network connectivity. In this paper the authors describe the concepts of GPIB, concepts of industry standard SICL (Standard Instrument Control Library), and the actual model implementation of the RIAC.","PeriodicalId":126922,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE Southeastcon'99.
