One way of providing high pumping power to an EDFA amplifier at low cost is to use tapered semiconductor lasers. The development of a software package for the design and optimisation of these high power tapered laser diodes is described. Cold cavity modelling enables the influence of the laser geometry on the overall performance of the cavity to be investigated along with the beam spoiler design. A 2.5D hot cavity laser model also takes into account effects such as spatial hole burning, carrier diffusion and current spreading. This enables detailed investigation of the laser design and the factors limiting beam quality to be carried out. Our present research aims to incorporate a 3D model of the optical propagation into the laser model using wide-angle FD-BPM schemes, novel finite difference techniques, and modem matrix solvers to minimize memory usage and calculation time.","PeriodicalId":126085,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 2002 4th International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks (IEEE Cat. Specific examples showing its validity and effectiveness are presented. Transmission spectra for double 60-degrees bent waveguides reveal narrow resonant transmission in contrast to the broad spectra observed for straight waveguides. Other groups have also registered this feature in recent experiments. The explanation suggested in this paper is that transmission through sharp bends can occur only with pure diffractively guided modes. The dependence of transmission of a coupled-cavity waveguide on the depths of the etched holes is also investigated.","PeriodicalId":126085,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 2002 4th International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks (IEEE Cat. Photonic band gap (PBG) materials, or photonic crystals, which can be presented as one-, two-, or three dimensional superstructures, are the object of intensive theoretical and experimental research, because it are very promising for applications in opto-electronics In our contribution we investigate PBG effects in magnetic film with stripe domain structure of 180/spl deg/ magnetic domains. Because the thickness of magnetic domains is very sensitive to the influence of internal magnetic field, it is possible to govern the position of PBG's by changing the magnitude of magnetic field. Using the transfer matrix method we have calculated PBG effects in yttrium-iron garnet film. Dependence of forbidden gaps in the electromagnetic wave spectrum on thickness of magnetic domain (i.e., on internal magnetic field) is numerically studied.","PeriodicalId":126085,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 2002 4th International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks (IEEE Cat. Applications related to the two-photon absorption (TPA) process are now well known and concerns different fields: 3D-fluorescence imaging, 3D optical data storage, 3D micro fabrication, photodynamic cancer therapy, and optical limiting. We developed a molecular engineering approach to optimize TPA phenomena within transparency requirements in the visible. Oligomers seem to be of great interest in the design of molecules with optimized TPA cross-sections in this range. The TPA efficiency may be interpreted in the J-aggregate model, which results from the coherent coupling of transition dipole moments in oligomers. Our strategy led also to the fabrication of microstructures by two-photon induced polymerization in the visible using low-cost microlasers.","PeriodicalId":126085,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 2002 4th International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks (IEEE Cat.
