The focus is on highlighting experiences of two BPS Stage 2 Qualification in Sport and Exercise Psychology (QSEP) trainees and Doctoral students from a different cultural, national, linguistic and gender background. We reflect upon the many experiences of applied practice in the course of working with clients spanning across geographical backgrounds. We contextualise our reflections pragmatically, that is, in the real lived experience of training and practice instead of a bubble of constructed reality. Current status of literature and future directions for practitioner-based applied research grounded in cultural realities are discussed. We highlight our doubts, our directions to rectify and invite you to join us in critically appraising our field, to enrich it in the (not so) distant future.","PeriodicalId":125848,"journal":{"name":"Sport & Exercise Psychology Review","volume":"567 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116289761","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Little attention has been paid to building these skills within the undergraduate sport and exercise psychology (SEP) classroom. In response to the gap above, two projects were conducted: (1) understanding the inclusivity of an Exercise Science department climate and perceived value of EDI in the curriculum; and (2) understanding student perceptions of content within the SEP classroom aimed at creating awareness and discussion of diverse identities in sport and physical activity, and the impact of those identities on performance and health outcomes. First, a survey was sent to all current Exercise Science majors and minors and Dance Science majors and follow-up focus groups were conducted to assess the climate of those with diverse identities. Second, a survey evaluating EDI class content and projects was sent to all Sport and Exercise Psychology students who took either course in Spring 2021 or Fall 2021. In seeking to understand the impact the field of SEP is having on future practitioners; it is critical to examine the climate of departments and how specific EDI content is designed and facilitated within the SEP classroom.","PeriodicalId":125848,"journal":{"name":"Sport & Exercise Psychology Review","volume":"122 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132439645","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to these additional stressors, the role of sport psychologists becomes increasingly important when supporting athletes from minority groups. An online questionnaire was developed to gain greater understanding of the equality, diversity, and inclusion (ED&I) knowledge, perceptions, and experiences of those working, studying or researching in the field of sport and exercise psychology. The findings of the current study highlight the ongoing experiences of sexism, racism, homo/transphobia, and ableism experienced by participants, as well as the need for more suitable, in-depth training around ED&I subjects and guidance on meaningful action to combat inequality and discrimination in the field. Football is an active participant on these platforms which has subsequently led to well documented media reports of racial abuse. However, research has been limited within English football when attempting to understand the extent of social media-based racism, social media behaviour, racism campaigns, programmes and legislation to tackle online racism within the industry, which this paper addresses. The purpose of this paper is to provide a critical review of the literature on social media-based racism within male English football through the lens of applied psychology. Opportunities for applied psychology from a social justice perspective to challenge social media-based racism through therapy, research, and training are highlighted. Micro and macro approaches to address social media-based racism are examined, with proposed future developments discussed.","PeriodicalId":125848,"journal":{"name":"Sport & Exercise Psychology Review","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125222595","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There are far too few women coaches in the coach workforce around the world. The aim of this paper is not an exhaustive literature review of this topic but an essay with a scope to describe the problem of underrepresentation of women in coaching, outline reasons for its presence and put forward recommendations for tackling it. With stronger commitment, greater focus, purposeful coordination and partnership, as well as sound leadership the required step change could be made to change the status quo that has persisted for women in coaching since the beginning of the Olympic ideals. Such a significant change is in line with recent calls that have been made for greater focus on diversity, inclusivity, and equity in coaching by key sport stakeholders around the world.","PeriodicalId":125848,"journal":{"name":"Sport & Exercise Psychology Review","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122059803","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The potential role for sport psychologists in promoting and supporting trans sports participants’ overall sense of perceived inclusion and belonging was also considered. Analysis revealed three core themes: the experience of personal acceptance of identity and social inclusion, the ‘internal’ battle between identity and expression, and the changing role that sport played during gender affirmation as a facilitative and or debilitative coping resource. The findings indicate areas in which sport psychologists can better support and enhance the gender affirmation experience of trans participants in sport by improving feelings of inclusiveness (social support), a sense of acceptance and promoting overall mental wellbeing. This research is particularly useful for practitioners, coaches and other athletes for understanding the supportive role sport can play throughout the gender affirmation process.","PeriodicalId":125848,"journal":{"name":"Sport & Exercise Psychology Review","volume":"158 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121607152","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We supplement personal reflections and notes from client work with learning logs and supervision as part of coursework components on a taught doctorate in sport and exercise psychology. This case study examines the client change process and how working in in a non-directive and relational manner enabled the client to take responsibility for shaping sessions to meet his unique reality, needs and preferences. Throughout this paper the trainee reflects on the experiences and specific challenges of working non-directly, offering unconditional positive regard and empathy. This case study contributes to the literature by presenting person-centred therapy within a professional sport environment and supports the recommendation of counselling and communication skills training in the development pathway for applied sport and exercise psychology practitioners.","PeriodicalId":125848,"journal":{"name":"Sport & Exercise Psychology Review","volume":"68 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134292050","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Comorbid state-trait anxiety was also of interest. Depression scores were measured using the CESD whereby state-trait anxiety were recorded by STAI. Following analysis of 111 participants, it was found that 51% of student athletes were displaying depressive symptoms. An independent samples t-test revealed that those displaying depressive symptoms reported significantly higher scores of physical pain, suggesting a possible link between pain and depressed mood. The same analysis technique found no difference in depression scores in those that reported injury in the past 12 months compared with participants with no injury history. However, non-injured student athletes displayed significantly higher state-anxiety scores, potentially due to continuing participation despite unrecognised overuse injuries. A strong positive correlation was established between CESD and STAI scores, providing further evidence for the comorbidity of depression and anxiety disorders.","PeriodicalId":125848,"journal":{"name":"Sport & Exercise Psychology Review","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127248031","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aims of the current study are to: (a) identify the types of DCDEs present in the British system; and, (b) to provide practical considerations for dual career practitioners working within DCDEs in the UK. To achieve these aims, this study conducted documentary analysis, interviews and focus groups with dual career practitioners and experts. Results highlighted that there are eight types of DCDEs, which exist to differing extents across the UK. While the overarching UK setup reflects the overarching European one, the approaches to DCDEs are varied in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Based on the results, practitioners are required to navigate organisational barriers to integrating within an environment and building relationships with DC athletes. The research provides a framework for developing sport specific taxonomies and identifying gaps in dual career support.","PeriodicalId":125848,"journal":{"name":"Sport & Exercise Psychology Review","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125145919","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
