It has been increasingly deployed by sport psychology consultants in sport and other organizational settings, yet how end-users perceive the tool’s use to benefit their performance is not yet known. Using semi-structured interviews, we explored the experiences of 16 individuals who have engaged with Spotlight Profile as part of a performance-based intervention across elite sport and a series of other domains (e.g. business, education, health). Thematic analysis led to the development of seven themes, which included: self-awareness, contextual sensitivity, positive outlook, adaptability, self-regulation, interpersonal skills, and team effectiveness. These findings highlight the multiple benefits which may be experienced by engaging with Spotlight Profile and offer a framework to guide the potential areas for development when using personality profiling in applied practice.","PeriodicalId":125848,"journal":{"name":"Sport & Exercise Psychology Review","volume":"125 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133000397","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The experiences of UK minority sports and exercise psychologists and trainees within the field have not been widely explored in the literature. The lived experiences of three practitioners were explored through the lens of race, sexual orientation and religion. Forty-five-minute semi-structured interviews were analysed using an interpretive phenomenological analysis. The following themes arose from the study: the unseen minority, embed discrimination in sport, improving the field, journey barriers and the qualities of a practitioner. Based on the themes explored future research areas are discussed.","PeriodicalId":125848,"journal":{"name":"Sport & Exercise Psychology Review","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133981386","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Whilst the views of stakeholders and elite coaches have been critiqued within the literature (Bradbury, 2013; Bradbury, Van Sterkenburg & Mignon, 2014), limited research exists that explores the views of white members of the non-professional footballing community. Data were collected via an anonymous online questionnaire. Forty-two participants took part (N=36 male, N=6 female). Data were analysed using thematic analysis and interpreted through a Critical Race Theory framework. This article draws upon two main themes. The first theme focuses on the perception that whilst racism still operates at an individual and institutional level in football, it is on the decline. Football is perceived to be a meritocracy and moving into a post-racial era. The second theme highlights participants’ views that although racism is multi-faceted, anti-racism should focus on individual acts of racism. Less than half of the participants were in favour of the implementation of a ‘Rooney Rule’ in professional football. Findings and their implications are discussed from a Critical Race Theory perspective.","PeriodicalId":125848,"journal":{"name":"Sport & Exercise Psychology Review","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130909430","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We discuss the impact, both professionally and personally, of these experiences and look at what lessons can be learned from the sharing of these narratives. We conclude by offering our thoughts on how these negative shared experiences can be used in a positive way to inform culture change, educate supervisors of the challenges and be woven into supervision so that female practitioners feel empowered and supported.","PeriodicalId":125848,"journal":{"name":"Sport & Exercise Psychology Review","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115520834","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The current study conducted a systematic review of sporadic literature relating to trans, non-binary and intersex people’s experience of physical activity with the aim of understanding how individuals negotiate and experience physical activity environments. A systematic searching of 8 databases and screening highlighted 30 academic papers for review. A narrative synthesis of the experiences of trans, non-binary and intersex individuals formed a three-layer model of influence. The first layer encapsulated the systemic and systemic influences such as transphobia and trans-moral panic. The second layer included external influences such as others’ behaviour, gendered spaces and exclusionary policies. The third layer was made up of internal influences such as internalised transphobia and gender concealment. The focus on fitting gender non-conforming individuals into a binary system through gendered spaces, pressures to switch teams and provide ‘proof’ of gender conformity set a dangerous precedent of the physical activity space as an unwelcoming and unsafe place for those who do not conform to the gender binary. If there should be a hope to address the health inequalities faced by the trans, non-binary and intersex community, the focus must move away from conformity and the debate of ‘fairness’ towards true inclusion and creating an environment where gender minorities can feel safe to engage with physical activity.","PeriodicalId":125848,"journal":{"name":"Sport & Exercise Psychology Review","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117306859","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We need continually work on decolonising and enhancing inclusion in our undergraduate teaching and ensure that students can see that ours is a profession for anyone. This article includes reflections on this process, focusing on a third-year applied performance psychology module led by an academic aiming to learn more and make positive changes. The article outlines the steps taken, including understanding a new evidence base and seeking input from lived experience from a former athlete who now delivers teaching in psychology. Changes made to the module are discussed, including the addition of taught sessions on how on working with performers who may have faced discrimination based on race, gender, sexual orientation and impairments. The article finishes with reflections from a student who recently completed the module and has begun to pursue a career as a sport and exercise psychologist. The authors hope that this article will provide some simple and useful ideas for others to enhance diversity and inclusion in their own teaching.","PeriodicalId":125848,"journal":{"name":"Sport & Exercise Psychology Review","volume":"189 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116105954","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many of these research findings are not validated with different populations, drawing largely from WEIRD (Western, Educated, Industrialised, Rich, and Democratic) populations. This limits cultural considerations and likely leads to overgeneralisation of the findings. This paper provides insight into a novel approach, created in response to the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic, which opens research participation up to an infinitely wider population pool. Exploring gender stereotypes in youth sport, the new methodology allowed participants to take part in the practical research remotely, using an online self-guide. The findings indicate that participants were able to engage with the research approach, and the template provides a means of diversifying the research without loss of integrity. Researcher reflections are included on the development and implementation of this approach with the recognition that this approach is new and that future researchers should look to take it on and progress its use further.","PeriodicalId":125848,"journal":{"name":"Sport & Exercise Psychology Review","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121172958","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The extent of literature surrounding bias is vast. However, the cause of bias is rarely explored. The present study aimed to investigate the effect personality has on gender bias within sports; this considers the influence of personality on gender bias and the potential rationale for bias. Sixty-eight (34 male and 34 female) participants completed a Big-5 personality inventory and read two of four sports vignettes (ballet and football), either male or female vignettes; they then further completed a two Big-5 inventory questionnaires regarding the personality of the athlete in the vignette. The results indicated that individual personality traits influence the level of bias towards gender in sports. Further, they suggest that the gender of the athlete influences our perception of athletes’ personalities and the stereotypical gender of the sport they participated in.","PeriodicalId":125848,"journal":{"name":"Sport & Exercise Psychology Review","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126414746","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
