The systems are interference-limited and thus an accurate radio network planning requires a refined characterization of the interference levels. A French research project called Semafor has been set up to investigate this characterization by means of two tools. First a hardware equipment is able to detect low interference levels by making use of antenna arrays and powerful algorithms. Second a coverage simulation tool is used. It is based on a propagation model able to estimate accurately large range echoes. System parameters like the interference level and SINR for DVB are simulated and validated by extensive measurement campaigns realized in the project with sophisticated testbeds.","PeriodicalId":125554,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE 19th International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128994172","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With user-specific, linear precoding, the data symbols to be transmitted to each user are passed through a linear transformation before being sent to the transmit antennas, and a different precoder is used for each user depending on his/her channel. For example, with 4 transmit antennas at the BS, 2 receive antennas at the mobile, and instant channel quality indicator (CQI), the cell capacity of a 4times2 2-clustered system with user-specific, linear precoding is more than 80% higher than the cell capacity of a system with one transmit antenna [10]. But such schemes are vulnerable to delayed CQI due to fast variations of interference, leading in some cases to performance that is worse than a SISO system. In this paper, we will present a method that mitigates the degradation due to fast-varying interference in MIMO systems that use linear precoding. We will show that the temporal variation of other-cell interference is almost eliminated with this method. Our results indicate that for a 4times2 2-Clustered transmit array with the proposed method, the performance loss due to delayed CQI is reduced from 35% to 5%.","PeriodicalId":125554,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE 19th International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128996037","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Each flow is associated with some QoS requirement, which is requested and granted in the form of a desired service rate. The achieved rate is estimated at the destination and fed back to the source periodically. Both the desired rate and achieved rate of a multihop flow are piggybacked on the packets of the flow and propagated from the source node to all its downstream relaying nodes. With such information, a compensation-capable scheduling algorithm originally designed for infrastructured wireless networks can be adapted to each ad hoc node for compensating a lagging flow, i.e., a flow with the achieved rate smaller than the desired rate. We propose the feedback and propagation mechanism as an end-to-end compensation framework, which is the key contribution of this work. We use BGFS-EBA, a scheduling algorithm for infrastructured wireless networks, as an example to demonstrate how such an algorithm is adapted to ad hoc networks within the proposed framework. Our simulation results show that the proposed mechanism maintains outcome fairness and compensate flows that suffer sporadic bursty channel errors effectively.","PeriodicalId":125554,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE 19th International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125347762","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The enhancement method consists of the Kalman filtering application to an artificial neural network (ANN) based fingerprinting location technique. The application of Kalman filtering has the advantage of using information about the mobilepsilas motion to reduce location errors (caused by the WLAN received signal strength- RSS variations) and to avoid trajectory discontinuities (caused by the static estimation of the ANN-based fingerprinting technique). To process the RSS-based fingeprinting location technique, two ANN-based pattern-matching algorithms have been examined: the generalized regression neural network (GRNN) and the multi-layer perceptron (MLP) and they have been compared to the classic K-nearest neighbors (KNN) method. Experimental results, conducted in a specific in-building environment, showed that the GRNN algorithm performs better than the MLP and KNN algorithms. The application of Kalman filtering to the considered GRNN-based fingerprinting location technique improved the location accuracy of about 22.4 % in terms of location mean error.","PeriodicalId":125554,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE 19th International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126661388","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A key technology in order to achieve the required high spectral efficiency is the application of multiple input multiple output (MIMO) techniques, which exploit spatial diversity, array gain or spatial multiplexing gain. Another source of diversity - inherent to wireless systems- is that of the multiuser diversity. Multiuser (MU) MIMO algorithms combine both MIMO gains with multiuser diversity benefits. Although MU MIMO techniques have been extensively studied and were shown to provide considerable average cell throughput gains, they often prove inadequate to cope with intercell interference and can only offer poor cell edge performance. Network coordination (multisite MIMO) can be applied in this case, which can achieve significant improvements for the users including those at the cell edge, based on coordinated transmission and reception by multiple base stations. In this paper we present an overview of the most promising MIMO technologies and discuss their relative merits and requirements.","PeriodicalId":125554,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE 19th International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications","volume":"118 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126861773","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Cooperative spectrum sensing can help reducing the mean detection time and increasing the agility of the sensing process. However, when the number of cognitive users is large, the bandwidth need for the control channel that are used to report the secondary user nodespsila results to the fusion center may become excessively large. In this paper, we apply the sequential probability ratio test (SPRT) to control the average number of the reporting bits. It is shown that the proposed technique not only reduces the mean detection time and bandwidth but also outperforms its non-sequential counterpart. We derive the relationships amongst the global performance, miss probability and false alarm probability and show how to control the average number of reports by thresholding the distributed cognitive users.","PeriodicalId":125554,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE 19th International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123411933","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As the available energy of these nodes is a critical resource, it is typically not feasible to transmit a full-resolution data feed from each sensor node to the base station. Therefore, it is important to apply techniques of data reduction so that fewer bits can be transmitted. In this work, we propose an algorithm for differentiated codification such that the sensor nodes send only the differences of their readings to a common data base. Simulation results reveal that the algorithm performs well in applications where the sensor nodes collect similar readings.","PeriodicalId":125554,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE 19th International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications","volume":"20 11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126229162","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed method incorporates co-channel interference (CCI) cancellation in the channel estimator and the channel estimation is successively performed with respect to each stream. Accuracy of channel estimation holds the key to be successfully converged the iterative equalization and decoding process. Although the channel estimates can be re-estimated by means of LS (Least Square) channel estimation using tentative decisions obtained in the iterative process, its performance is severely limited in a MIMO system because of erroneous decisions and ill-conditioned channel estimation matrix. The proposed method can suppress the above effects by means of CCI cancellation and successive channel estimation. Computer simulation confirms that the proposed channel estimation method can accurately estimate the channel, and the receiver with iterative equalization and the proposed method achieves excellent decoding performance in a MIMO-SM (Spatial Multiplexing) system.","PeriodicalId":125554,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE 19th International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications","volume":"76 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123042098","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This assumption has been proven to be very reasonable when circuit voice was the dominant service and backhaul capacity provisioning accounting for the peak rate at the BSs was an economically feasible option. However, as more efficient air interface technologies are introduced along with higher data rate services, a growing concern is that the transport part of the mobile network can also represent a bottleneck. In this paper we analyze a BS assignment strategy that simultaneously exploits load balancing in both the radio interface and the transport backhaul links. The BS assignment problem is solved by means of simulated annealing heuristics under different deployment scenarios comprising partially-limited backhaul radio access networks (RANs) and the presence of traffic hotspots. Results achieved for the proposed BS assignment strategy are compared to those obtained by common strategies such as minimum path loss (MPL) and load balancing radio (LBR).","PeriodicalId":125554,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE 19th International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126362726","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We consider a case where the number of single antenna users K >> M where M is the size of antenna array at the base station (BS). We consider zero-forcing beamforming system with semi-orthogonal user selection algorithm in which channel state information is splitted into channel quality information (CQI) and channel direction information (CDI). In such a user-dense multi-user system feedback channel is inundated if all the users are feedbacking even in the case where only a limited feedback is employed. In order to reduce the feedback load we propose threshold based schemes in which threshold is applied on CQI or CDI. We show that by employing proposed feedback reduction schemes feedback load can be significantly reduced without sacrificing much of the sum-capacity of the system.","PeriodicalId":125554,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE 19th International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114176396","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
