Sartori","doi":"10.1109/IMTC.1997.603947","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/IMTC.1997.603947","url":null,"abstract":"This paper presents a hardware solution for the implementation of high-speed control systems based on a neural architecture that, by using a novel number representation, reduces significantly the silicon area required by the realization of the architecture as a digital chip. The neural architecture was originally implemented as the TOTEM neural chip. The new number representation is based on logarithms so that the costly multipliers of TOTEM can be replaced by smaller adders, at the cost of introducing on-chip converters and paying an accuracy penalty. The resulting architecture TOTEM++ is then presented. The meter employs absorption techniques, non-destructive and can easily be adapted for on-line measurements. The samples are placed in fixed size containers in 700-900 gr batches. The microwave energy absorption by the samples at certain frequencies is found to be proportional to moisture contents. The previous information about the microwave moisture properties of the dried fruits are stored in a microcontroller. The microcontroller interfaced to the system records the amount of absorption and indicates the moisture levels, after having compared with the stored information and taking the weights, grain sizes and the types of dried fruit samples into account. By this method an accuracy of 2-3% has been achieved. It is based on a relaxation oscillator in which both the frequency and the duty-cycle of the output signal simultaneously carry information from a pair of different sensors. The output frequency is linearly related to the resistive unbalance of a Wheatstone bridge, while the duty-cycle is independently controlled by a second sensor. For this purpose, a thermoresistor may be used for thermal compensation of the primary sensor. Considering short term field tests, carried out by light-weight portable measurement system, some of the \"common\" assumption about strain gauge selection criteria are wrong. The measurement system has already been tested for paper-, rubber- and textile-webs, sheet metal and road surfaces with a relative measurement error of typically less than 1% dependent on the dynamic response of the correlator. The measurement system consists of a sensor unit, transforming the stochastic characteristics of the moving object into two signals with a delay time /spl tau/*, and a correlation unit, extracting the delay time from the signals and calculating the velocity of the surface. Different measurements at a test stand and at an industrial paper machine will be presented to demonstrate the accuracy of the measurement system and its flexibility and robustness. The employed neural network is 'delayless' nonlinear filter, which reduces the quantization noise of the low-resolution A/D converter. Hence, the output resolution can be enhanced after the quantization noise has been reduced. The operating principle, structure, and algorithm of the resolution enhancement scheme are described in detail. We demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach by using both simulated and practical signals.
