It then provides an overview of her life, highlighting some of the ways in which the writer, who was born in 1940, experienced or witnessed first-hand the historical events, legal pressures, and socio-political realities of her era. There follows a reminder of the two prevalent concerns that have structured her work, namely ‘le mépris social’ and ‘la domination masculine’, both of which pertain to ‘ le politique’. ‘ La politique’ being also subject to examination in the articles in this issue, the politics of Ernaux – the citizen and the writer – is subsequently surveyed and consideration is given to the author's will to distinguish it from the ‘political action of literary writing’. Finally, this introduction examines the processes of representation and self-positioning that shape the political in Ernaux's prose. A concluding section provides an overview of the nine contributions brought together here.","PeriodicalId":12398,"journal":{"name":"French Cultural Studies","volume":"91 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2024-03-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140064351","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Si la réception de l’œuvre demeure clivée en France, force est de constater que le programme qui a en partie guidé l’œuvre d’Ernaux – « venger ma race et venger mon sexe » – participe d’une conception politique de la littérature qui peut prendre une valeur prescriptive ou incitative pour des écrivain.e.s transfuges de classe et/ou féministes. Par leurs commentaires critiques, ces écrivain.e.s infléchissent la lecture de l’œuvre – par l’autrice mais aussi par les lecteurs ordinaires – qui confère une utilité sociale à la « transgression » esthétique prêtée à la prose d’Ernaux.","PeriodicalId":12398,"journal":{"name":"French Cultural Studies","volume":"53 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2024-02-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139994769","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

En partant d’une suggestion de Larroux (2020), cet article s’intéressera aux deux récits de filiation « laborieuse » d’Annie Ernaux, La Place (1983) et Une femme (1988), ainsi qu’à « Je ne suis pas sortie de ma nuit » (1997), dans le but de réfléchir à leurs affinités avec cette perspective. On s’intéressera, d’abord, à l’attention qu’Ernaux porte à la vie ordinaire. On s’interrogera, ensuite, sur les rapports entre les actes de soigner et d’écrire, en avançant l’hypothèse que les récits d’Ernaux peuvent, d’une certaine manière, « soigner » les parents disparus, mais aussi la classe laborieuse en général. Enfin, on réfléchira à la poétique définie dans La Place : elle témoigne d’une attitude de l’autrice relevant du care.","PeriodicalId":12398,"journal":{"name":"French Cultural Studies","volume":"48 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2024-02-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139938996","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

I analyse them here both in relation to Ernaux's published works, particularly La Honte and Mémoire de fille and to the letters I wrote at a similar period and phase of my life, as a first-generation student at St Hugh's College, Oxford in the early 70s. At the time, like Annie Duchesne, 1 I had no political or sociological understanding of my experience; reading Ernaux 20 years later in the early 90s was a literary epiphany, illuminating my trajectory from a working-class culture of origin to a middle-class life and career. My engagement with Ernaux over 30 years has also involved a continuous correspondence with the writer, which I draw on here, illustrating the blurred boundaries between intimacy and research discussed by Fraser and Puwar (2008) . This mise en scène of my reading self is placed within the context of the wider communities of class migrant readers of Ernaux: the lay readers studied by myself and Isabelle Charpentier, Ernaux specialists in academe, and the younger writers discussed by Aurélie Adler in this special issue.","PeriodicalId":12398,"journal":{"name":"French Cultural Studies","volume":"16 6","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2024-02-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139780405","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They are a mostly White, endogamous, and isolated group who have had a discreet existence in the thickly forested inland region of Grands-Fonds du Moule since the late 1600s. Through an analysis of the documentary and parts of the novel, the article explores historical, cultural, and linguistic convergences between the Blancs-Matignon and the majority Black and mixed-race population of Guadeloupe. The identity politics of weaving the narratives of the Blancs-Matignon into the matrix of Guadeloupe's contemporary society will also be examined.","PeriodicalId":12398,"journal":{"name":"French Cultural Studies","volume":"91 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2024-02-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139839628","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

L’opposition d’Ernaux au pouvoir dépasse la simple protestation ; comme chez Camus, qui demeure une de ses inspirations, une énergie du « pour » anime cette posture politique vouée à la recherche de la vérité, à l’exercice de la liberté et à la lutte pour la dignité. Ses prises de position contre toutes les formes d’injustice (politique migratoire française, traitement des Gilets Jaunes par les autorités françaises, réforme des retraites de 2023, etc.) confirment son rôle de protagoniste capitale d’une « repolitisation » anti-capital. Si Jean-Luc Mélenchon symbolise le contre-pouvoir, Ernaux, elle, incarne la puissance du désir : donc toujours à imaginer. Politique et éthique se fondent en une stylistique (qui englobe la justesse expressive) porteuse d’une autre vie.","PeriodicalId":12398,"journal":{"name":"French Cultural Studies","volume":"80 18","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2024-02-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139781380","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
