One deals with the two seminars in Vienna during the 1920s (one was run by the younger Menger and, as Roy Weintraub described in a recent issue of the Journal of Economic Literature, was responsible for the introduction of much of the modern mathematical emphasis in economics; the other, run by Professor von Mises, was built strongly on the subjectivism of the earlier Menger-Boehm Bawerk-von Wieser seminar). There will be some papers written by \"genuine\" i.e., present Austrians, as well as some papers dealing with the work of those who were strongly influenced by the seminars. Among the latter are papers dealing with the work of Lord Robbins and the late Fritz Machlup.","PeriodicalId":123974,"journal":{"name":"History of Economics Society Bulletin","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1984-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121580278","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

My purpose is to explain and interpret two or three leading aspects of the Japanese response to Western economic thought after some 250 years of Tokugawa Shogunate isolation ended about the middle of the last century, aspects of which have seemed strange to Western observers of Japanese culture, decidedly including myself. The explanation will also try to distinguish the assimilation process of Western economics in Japan from similar processes in other developing countries (LDCs) which have worked out quite differently. The three special features of Western-style economic thought in Japan which have seemed strangest to the Western visitor, again including myself, are these:","PeriodicalId":123974,"journal":{"name":"History of Economics Society Bulletin","volume":"101 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1984-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131900579","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
