MAIDENS AND MOTHERS: AN ANALYSIS OF HOPI CORN METAPHORS 少女与母亲:霍皮玉米隐喻分析

{"title":"MAIDENS AND MOTHERS: AN ANALYSIS OF HOPI CORN METAPHORS","authors":"M. Black","doi":"10.2307/3773505","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.2307/3773505","url":null,"abstract":"The importance of corn in Hopi culture is acknowledged in many ways. Along with beans and squash, corn has provided the basis of unirrigated cultivation in a region that appears to be too arid for farming. As the staple food, it is served in some form at every meal and so figures prominently in traditional food-preparing activities. It also has an important place in ritual activities; \"Corn appears in virtually every Hopi ceremony either as corn meal, or as an actual ear of corn or as a symbolic painting\" (Fewkes 1901:214). Archaeologists suggest that the Hopi received maize cultivation around three thousand years ago from casual contacts with nomadic bands from Mexico (Ford 1982:10). The Hopi say, instead, that Maasawu, who greeted the Hopi on their emergence into the Fourth World, gave them corn and the digging stick for planting it at that time, saying, \"Pay nu' panis sooya'yta,\" \"I have only the digging stick; if you want to live my way, that's the way you have to live.\" In the Hopi lexicon, the importance of corn is reflected in the large number of terms that refer to types of corn, parts of the plant, stages in plant development, stages in the grinding of cornmeal, and corn-based dishes. Additionally, corn figures in a number of metaphors that appear regularly in speech; frequently, but not exclusively, in the context of ritual song. Two of the most prevalent Hopi metaphors pertaining to corn?\"People are corn\" and \"Corn plants are fe? males\"?will be analyzed in this paper, with some attention given to related conceptualizations. The aim of the paper is also to demonstrate the underlying coherence of the metaphors and show how they relate to various aspects of Hopi culture and to other dominant symbols. The analysis will draw on Hopi texts recorded in the ethnographic literature, videotaped interviews (Evers 1979), and songs related to the author by Professor Emory Sekaquaptewa, who has aided greatly in the translation of the Hopi texts.","PeriodicalId":123584,"journal":{"name":"Ethnology: An international journal of cultural and social anthropology","volume":"105 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1984-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124757337","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Forced resettlement and the survival systems of the urban poor 强迫重新安置和城市贫民的生存制度

{"title":"Forced resettlement and the survival systems of the urban poor","authors":"Leopoldo J. Bartolomé","doi":"10.2307/3773745","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.2307/3773745","url":null,"abstract":"The forced resettlement of populations in association with the construction of dams and other major public works constitutes a crisis that generates what Scudder (1973) and others call a \"multi-dimensional stress of relocation.\" The intensity, characteristics, and manifestations of this stress depend on many variables, some of which are universal while others are specific to the socio? economic and cultural milieu in which the displacement takes place. Studies carried out during recent decades have greatly contributed to delineating the general features of compulsory relocations as social processes, but the vast majority of these studies were based on rural populations. Thus, Scudder (1981) treats these processes within the general framework of rural development schemes and the colonization of new lands. Although one could place urban relocations caused by dams and reservoirs in the context of urban renewal or slums and squatter settlement eradication schemes, their peculiarities (Bartolome 1983) are so many and great that they deserve special consideration. Further? more, studies of these kinds of processes can shed light upon one of the most critical areas of social theory; the relations between individual behavior and social forms (including cultural norms) under conditions of very rapid social change (Fahim I983:VII). This article describes the early consequences brought about by the impending forced resettlement of more than 20,000 persons in the city of Posadas, Argentina, because of the Yacyreta Hydroelectric Project. It focuses on the survival systems and adaptive strategies of the urban poor, who constitute the bulk of those affected by the future reservoir. This population's adaptive strategies are predominantly aimed at achieving some steadiness in the control of resources obtained from a wide range of sources and thereby reduce the uncertainties which impair the functioning of their survival systems. My main argument here is that the very prospect of displacement, first surfacing ten years ago, has caused a noticeable decrease in the output of these survival systems and in the efficiency of adaptive strategies. The announcements of future displace? ment created great uncertainty and gave rise to disorganizing forces not controllable through traditional coping mechanisms. The result has been a deterioration in the living conditions of the urban poor well in advance of the actual relocations. Such entropic effects should be taken into account in the impact analysis of any major public project, as well as by any action program intended to compensate uprooted populations for the social costs of development. 177","PeriodicalId":123584,"journal":{"name":"Ethnology: An international journal of cultural and social anthropology","volume":"75 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1984-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127206556","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Animal metaphors and social control in Tzintzuntzan 《Tzintzuntzan》中的动物隐喻与社会控制
S. Brandes
{"title":"Animal metaphors and social control in Tzintzuntzan","authors":"S. Brandes","doi":"10.2307/3773747","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.2307/3773747","url":null,"abstract":"Ever since Leach (1964) published his groundbreaking paper on animal categories and verbal abuse, scholars have demonstrated considerable interest in the subject of animal metaphors. Like Leach's study, most of this work (e.g., Basso 1976; Crocker 1977; Tambiah 1969) has grown out of the literature on binary oppositions, mediation, and anomalous categories; it has focused, in other words, on cognitive issues. Recently, the topic has been explored effectively with reference to the related subject of world view as well (Taggart 1982). In this paper, I analyze animal metaphors from a different perspective; i.e., the role they play in promoting social control. I intend to show that animal metaphors acquire this function in two ways: first, cognitively, by accentuating the differ? ences between human and bestial behavior and thereby encouraging people to conform to culturally approved codes; and second, socially, by providing people with highly charged terms that can be manipulated in daily speech to reduce or increase social distance. Animal metaphors constitute an important domain for talking about disapproved or undesirable attributes. Hence, when these meta? phors are invoked they implicitly remind people of human behavioral norms and physical ideals. They reinforce the social and moral order.","PeriodicalId":123584,"journal":{"name":"Ethnology: An international journal of cultural and social anthropology","volume":"152 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1984-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123335459","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
