The basic structure of the plant is described followed by a discussion of how recurrent neural networks may be applied to the problem of predicting systems with diurnal and chaotic components. Next, the software system developed and implemented on the site is presented. A brief discussion on the feasibility of incorporating the prediction module within a hybrid system environment follows. Finally, the possibility of using fuzzy logic for control in similar problems is discussed with reference to some preliminary experiments.","PeriodicalId":123427,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 1995 Second New Zealand International Two-Stream Conference on Artificial Neural Networks and Expert Systems","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-11-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117299070","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Once the system has been trained on a reference speaker, the association of visual cues is performed in real time to each 20 ms of incoming speech. Preliminary results are reported with reference to the ongoing experimentation both with normal hearing people and with deaf persons to estimate some of the many perceptual thresholds involved in the complex task of speech reading from synthetic images. This experimental phase is carried on in cooperation with FIADDA, the Italian association of the families of hearing impaired children, and is based on a flexible simulation environment.","PeriodicalId":123427,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 1995 Second New Zealand International Two-Stream Conference on Artificial Neural Networks and Expert Systems","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-11-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126932547","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Most of the research in model-based diagnosis is based on maintenance diagnosis. Operative diagnosis, on the other hand, is done while the system is still in operation even after the fault. We plan to develop an efficient algorithm for operative diagnosis which can handle a large domain of faults and multiple faults in real time. In our search toward a better algorithm, we develop and compare two different reasoning methods: diagnosis based on model based reasoning, and diagnosis based on heuristic rules learnt from model based reasoning. This paper presents the results of the comparison.","PeriodicalId":123427,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 1995 Second New Zealand International Two-Stream Conference on Artificial Neural Networks and Expert Systems","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-11-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126934527","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, it is well known that the convergence to local minima is inevitable in these approaches. Lagrange programming neural networks have been proposed. They differ from the gradient descent algorithms by using anti-descent terms in their dynamical differential equations. We analyze the stability and the convergence property of the Lagrangian method when it is applied to a satisfiability problem of propositional calculus.","PeriodicalId":123427,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 1995 Second New Zealand International Two-Stream Conference on Artificial Neural Networks and Expert Systems","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-11-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125283857","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Hebbian-type learning is one of the mechanisms responsible for the development of such neurons. It does not model, however, control of the number of neurons that develop in response to input. We propose a mechanism that adaptively controls this number. The mechanism utilizes the variances of neurons' outputs and encodes them as the lengths of the neural network's synaptic weight vectors, thus allowing only the synapses of those neurons to develop that represent significant information about the neural network's input and suppressing neurons' synapses that don't.","PeriodicalId":123427,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 1995 Second New Zealand International Two-Stream Conference on Artificial Neural Networks and Expert Systems","volume":"119 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-11-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117274747","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For realizing good placement, not only the structures but also the functions of the circuit should be grasped and some hierarchical methods for the placement should be done. This paper presents a new hierarchical method of placement of parts on the PCB with fuzzification of parts connections. The devices in a circuit are divided into several blocks based on the flows of main signals of the circuit. However it is difficult to judge which device belongs to which block based on only the information included in the CAD data. We propose a method to fuzzify the degrees of belonging of the devices to the blocks. The boundaries of the areas for the blocks are also fuzzified. Each device is placed based on fuzzy areas of blocks, The feasibility of the method is verified using an actual PCB.","PeriodicalId":123427,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 1995 Second New Zealand International Two-Stream Conference on Artificial Neural Networks and Expert Systems","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-11-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124836795","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

ANNs are becoming increasingly prominent in many areas of weather forecasting due to their potential to capture the complex relationships between the many factors that contribute to certain weather conditions. The estimations produced by the ANNs were compared to one estimation technique and one forecasting technique used by the Bureau of Meteorology. The results confirm that ANNs have the potential for successful application to the problem of rainfall estimation.","PeriodicalId":123427,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 1995 Second New Zealand International Two-Stream Conference on Artificial Neural Networks and Expert Systems","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-11-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127558138","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The controller can be adapted so that a controlled system shows a behavior which is specified using heuristic rules. The training algorithm is simple and computationally inexpensive.
