The learning ability increases the autonomy of agents, which may lead them to unforeseen results on the individual (micro) and group (macro) level. Learning is even required to be successful in human complex systems, for which an adaptation to environmental changes is necessary. However, learning agents are considered as complex and not easy to understand. Therefore, they are not often applied in agent-based simulation models in the social sciences. This paper provides an overview of the learning agent concept by (1) putting learning agents in the context of the research field machine learning, (2) clarifying the basic learning agent decision process, and (3) providing a systematic overview of the learning agent properties as model guideline and communication scheme. This paper should encourage researchers in the field to apply learning agents by supporting the understanding and communication of the concept.","PeriodicalId":123335,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 38th International Computer Software and Applications Conference Workshops","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-07-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128172464","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Information flow occurs either explicitly or implicitly in a system. In cyber-physical systems (CPSs), complicated interactions occur frequently between computational components and physical components. Thus, detecting and quantifying information flow in these systems is more difficult than it is in purely cyber systems. In CPSs, failures and attacks are either from the physical infrastructure, or from cyber part of data management and communication protocol, or a combination of both. As the physical infrastructure is inherently observable, aggregated physical observations can lead to unintended cyber information leakage. The computational portion of a CPS is driven by algorithms. Within algorithmic theory, the online problem considers input that arrives one by one and deals with extracting the algorithmic solution through an advice tape without knowing some parts of input. In this paper, a smart grid CPS is examined from an information flow perspective, physical values constitute an advice tape. As such, system confidentiality is violated through cyber to physical information flow. An approach is generalized to quantify the information flow in a CPS.","PeriodicalId":123335,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 38th International Computer Software and Applications Conference Workshops","volume":"297 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-07-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127411563","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The analysis technique on a temporal structured workflow can thus be applied on SBS. In the past, there were several researches working on artifact anomaly detection in a workflow. Their results are useful and have been published. However, their works does not consider temporal factor and the anomalies detected may not exist in a real system. In other word, they are less effective in a temporal structural workflow (TS workflow). Neither for SBS. Besides, the time complexity of these methods are NP, not efficient either. In this paper, we re-define the anomalous behaviors and develop an approach to discover artifact anomalies in a TS workflow. In the approach, we design several algorithms to detect the anomalies defined. By using our approach, workflow and SBS designers can detect artifact anomalies more precisely inside their TS workflow and thus might prevent run-time errors more effectively.","PeriodicalId":123335,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 38th International Computer Software and Applications Conference Workshops","volume":"99 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-07-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124194835","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There have been studies of reuse methods, success factors, approaches and tools. An open question is still whether and how reuse differs between embedded and nonem-bedded systems, an important issue for the aerospace industry. This article describes the results from a survey taken at a major aerospace corporation, in order to characterize developers' views on software reuse. 78 developers participated in the survey. The questions focused on modern reuse strategies (whether they were used alone or in combination) and their effectiveness.","PeriodicalId":123335,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 38th International Computer Software and Applications Conference Workshops","volume":"98 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-07-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114243181","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We can treat power allocation for energy-saving and reducing peak load as the knapsack problem, regarding that an appliance as an item, importance of the appliance for user's life as the profit of the item, power consumption of the appliance as size of the item, a power source as a knapsack, and an available power amount of the power source as capacity of the knapsack. Due to their nature, FLOSS projects depend heavily on their community. A strong open source community behind a project provides certain guarantees for the project's quality and survivability. It is for this reason that so many FLOSS teams have as a priority the creation of healthy communities around their projects. This paper aims to present the efforts and experiences of the small team behind Mood bile: Mobile Learning for Moodle (www.moodbile.org), to create such a community that will help support the project and actively aid in its evolution. We present the steps taken thus far, their potential risks, their outcomes and the plans for the future as we strive to achieve critical mass for the community.","PeriodicalId":123335,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 38th International Computer Software and Applications Conference Workshops","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-07-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127864684","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

ICs are smart sensors aimed at detecting attacks in CPS and alerting the human operators. Cross-correlator is an anomaly detection technique for detecting deception attacks. We show how ICs could be implemented at three different CPS safety protection layers to maintain CPS in a safe state. In addition, we combine ICs with the cross-correlator technique to assure high probability of failure detection. Performance simulations show that a combination of these two security countermeasures is effective in detecting and mitigating CPS failures, including catastrophic failures.","PeriodicalId":123335,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 38th International Computer Software and Applications Conference Workshops","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-07-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126533271","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The need to apply patterns in the right sequence is very important, but how to apply them using many pattern languages or pattern catalogue is sometimes very difficult. After examining the current literature on the use of patterns from the software development perspective, this paper proposes a framework for determining the pattern applicability during the software development. It will also examine the use of pattern maps and the resulting ambiguity in their use by looking at different well-documented pattern maps. The paper investigates how patterns applicability alters the way of applying them in a language and from different patterns banks. The proposed framework in this paper allows the designer to be guided through the process of applying patterns.","PeriodicalId":123335,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 38th International Computer Software and Applications Conference Workshops","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-07-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122033003","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the WB security domain, an attacker may have access to the inner structure of an application or even the entire binary code. It becomes pretty easy for attackers to inspect, reverse engineer, and tamper the application with the information they steal. The basis of this paper is the 14 patterns developed by a leading provider of software protection technologies and solutions. We provide a part of a new modeling language named i-WBS(White-Box Security) to describe problems of WB security better. The essence of White-Box security problem is code security. We made the new modeling language focus on code more than ever before. In this way, developers who are not security experts can easily understand what they need to really protect.","PeriodicalId":123335,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 38th International Computer Software and Applications Conference Workshops","volume":"69 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-07-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133349732","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
