A linear minimum mean-squared error (LMMSE) estimator accepting a priori information has been proposed as an equaliser for single antenna systems and in this paper we discuss its use as a space-time decoder. We also derive a novel modification, called the self-iterating LMMSE decoder, and present simulation results. It is shown that this modified LMMSE decoder can achieve huge gains over the conventional LMMSE decoder. In order to exploit all the advantages that the wireless medium offers, new routing metrics must be explored. These metrics should come from a cross-layer approach in order to make the routing layer aware of the local issues of the underling layers. In the present paper, we explore three primitive physical layer parameters: interference, packet success rate, and data rate. We define the metrics so that the routing level can correctly find paths that offer: low levels of generated interference, reliability in terms of packet success rate, and highest available transmission rate. The design of link adaptation has mainly concentrated on improving throughput performance. Although this design strategy can be considered appropriate for best effort services, multimedia services have important constraints in terms of transmission delay and error rates that can be tolerated without considerable degradation in the quality of service that the user might experience. In this context, this paper presents link adaptation algorithms that are able to control the experienced error rate and also to trade-off between throughput and error rate. These solutions are based on the current architecture in the Internet, where the IP address represents both the locator and the identifier of the node. In the IETF, identity and location information separation has raised a lot of discussion and new ideas have emerged to separate these. Host identity protocol is one candidate that can be used for this separation. These near Shannon performances are due to a proper choice of RS component codes in the construction of RS product codes. RS-BTC based on Q-ary symbol concatenation has a great advantage in terms of block size over those based on bit concatenation. The advantage of FLO is that physical layer is configured at call setup, and thereby the link parameters can be optimized for the performance requirements of the service. This greatly improves service performance in GERAN and thus enables seamless continuity of new services across 3GPP radio access technologies. In this paper, we evaluate the network level gains of the GERAN FLO concept. Network capacity is evaluated using dynamic high-resolution system simulator. We assume a typical GSM/EDGE network with high traffic density and tight frequency plan. Network performance is evaluated for adaptive multi-rate speech, voice over IP, and real-time multimedia services. Previous published research by the authors have shown that such concatenated PUM code structures have better distance properties and performance than equivalent structures based on convolutional codes. The decoding algorithm presented is based on the max-log MAP algorithm used for classical turbo codes with component convolutional codes. Unlike the trellis of a convolutional code, the trellis of PUM codes is characterised by parallel branches between state pairs and multiple input branch labels. We show how the original max-log MAP algorithm is adapted to cope with the unusual trellis structure of PUM codes. Coherent detection requires a per-sub band estimation of the channel frequency response for each coded orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (COFDM) symbol. This paper compares the performance of a number of pilot symbol assisted modulation (PSAM) methods for achieving such estimates. Performance results are characterised by bit-error-rate (BER), data throughput (DT) and mean-squared error (MSE) for ETSI UTRA specified channel environments.
