In this paper, we present a call admission control protocol for cellular wireless networks. Our protocol depends on degrading the existing calls by reducing the bandwidth allocated to them in order to admit \"important\" calls. Our protocol assign priorities for the incoming calls, and in the same time assign priorities to the existing calls, both admitted calls are admitted according to their priorities and the existing calls are degraded according to their priorities. We show simulation results for the relation between network utilization, call blocking probability, and average assigned bandwidth during the life of the call.","PeriodicalId":122977,"journal":{"name":"1st International Symposium onWireless Communication Systems, 2004.","volume":"137 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-09-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133610470","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They also provides minimum total transmission power but achieving a certain quality of service (QoS) at each mobile. A new version of such a JPCOB technique was developed in a previous work, whose major innovation is the capacity of all the cell antennas to serve the mobiles cooperatively. For doing that, a new topology of the cell where the antennas are grouped in arrays and distributed around the coverage area is proposed. We denote these arrays as bases stations (BS), and the whole structure as multinode B. In this paper, we present a wide comparison between this new topology and the conventional one (sectorized node B placed in the center of the cell). Realistic scenarios have been simulated and from the results some interesting conclusions are given: for 3 BS's both topologies exhibits similar behavior, whereas for 2 BS's multinode B outperforms centered node B.","PeriodicalId":122977,"journal":{"name":"1st International Symposium onWireless Communication Systems, 2004.","volume":"104 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-09-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133981728","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In practical wireless systems, the signal fading can severely degrade the receiver performance if the accurate channel amplitude and phase information is not available to the receiver. The bit error rate (BER) performance of maximal ratio combining (MRC) M-QAM with pilot symbol assisted modulation (PSAM) channel estimation in static and Rayleigh fading channels is derived. The effects of noise and estimator decorrelation on the received BER are examined. The high sensitivity of diversity systems to channel estimation error is investigated and quantified.","PeriodicalId":122977,"journal":{"name":"1st International Symposium onWireless Communication Systems, 2004.","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-09-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130224115","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, such reserved resources, e.g. bandwidth, may be unused as a consequence of the variations in the actual resource demands. Since bandwidth is scarce in wireless LANs (WLANs), QoS provisioning may be very expensive. Therefore, we propose a new resource management approach leading to a more efficient usage of the network in which communicating stations or end-users dynamically hand over some of the free resources temporarily to the other communication neighbors. This paper concentrates on two fundamental problems of such a demand-based sharing of resources: the current estimation of resource utilization, and the algorithm to share and redistribute resources with real-time requirements. This approach for resource and traffic management allows one to achieve significantly better utilization of network resources.","PeriodicalId":122977,"journal":{"name":"1st International Symposium onWireless Communication Systems, 2004.","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-09-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128763607","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of their limitations however is their restricted bandwidth of operation due chiefly to the fact that the port impedance of the antenna changes in accordance with the configuration of the reactances employed to load the parasitic elements. We propose a technique to optimise the loading patterns used by adding an extra degree of freedom in the form of variable impedance at the central antenna element and thereby providing the ability to perform dynamic matching of the port impedance. This improves the frequency characteristics of the ESPAR antenna so that it may be used in different types of communication systems as a result of having wider bandwidth performance while retaining good beamforming characteristics.","PeriodicalId":122977,"journal":{"name":"1st International Symposium onWireless Communication Systems, 2004.","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-09-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127949342","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we propose an iterative frequency-domain decision feedback equalizer for the downlink transmission within DS-CDMA systems employing block-transmission techniques, with an appropriate cyclic extension appended to each block. Our performance results show that the proposed receiver structure has excellent performance, close to the single-user MFB (matched filter bound), even for severe time-dispersive scenarios and/or in the presence of strong interfering channels.","PeriodicalId":122977,"journal":{"name":"1st International Symposium onWireless Communication Systems, 2004.","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-09-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126340819","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, space-time block coding (STBC) techniques are considered as a means of enhancing the performance of COFDM WLANs. Packet error rate (PER) and throughput performance results are presented under different channel conditions. A WLAN physical layer simulator employing STBC and a propagation modelling tool are combined in order to evaluate the coverage and throughput of hot spot WLANs employing STBC for the 2/spl times/2 and 4/spl times/4 MIMO cases. Results showed that STBC can provide good performance, even at high K factors and under correlated channels. Throughput is significantly enhanced throughout the environment when STBC are employed.","PeriodicalId":122977,"journal":{"name":"1st International Symposium onWireless Communication Systems, 2004.","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-09-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121662439","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The scenario of QoS routing in MANETs with the presence of network information uncertainty is considered and modelled as a partially observable Markov decision process (POMDP). The proposed scheme integrates the original TBP scheme with a reinforcement learning method for POMDPs, called the on-policy first-visit Monte Carlo (ONMC) method, and a suitable path caching strategy. Simulation results shows that the inclusion of patch caching with the ONMC method can indeed achieve message overhead reduction with marginal difference in the path search ability and additional computational and storage requirements.","PeriodicalId":122977,"journal":{"name":"1st International Symposium onWireless Communication Systems, 2004.","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-09-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122777129","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, the attention is focused on the management of independent and dependent from mobility services. Two classes of services have been considered: MIP and MDP classes defined in the integrated services for mobile wireless environment. These two classes have been managed in a wireless adaptive networks. A utility-based rate adaptation algorithm has been considered and an admission control has been proposed. Rate adaptation and admission control consider the channel conditions through a slow fading channel model for wireless LAN 802.11b. The admission control can use the pre-reservation phase among the cells potentially visited from the mobile hosts for MIP services and consider the bandwidth availability only on the current cells for MDP services. A new way for estimating the cells visited by MIP services has been proposed and analyzed. The performance evaluations of the wireless system have been evaluated in terms of total bandwidth utilization for MIP and MDP services, average bandwidth assigned to mobile users, system outage probability and admitted flows.","PeriodicalId":122977,"journal":{"name":"1st International Symposium onWireless Communication Systems, 2004.","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-09-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126779884","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Few, however, have addressed the practical problem of estimating the instantaneous channel length. This necessary but often overlooked component of channel estimation is crucial to accurate channel estimates in many OFDM channel estimation techniques.
