Merani","doi":"10.1109/ISWCS.2004.1407270","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/ISWCS.2004.1407270","url":null,"abstract":"In this paper we discuss some experimental results obtained from a laboratory testing of TCP-friendly rate control (TFRC), when such control is employed in an IEEE 802.11g wireless local area network (WLAN). We show that, despite TFRC exhibiting a good responsive behavior and a considerable TCP-friendliness in a wired environment, occasionally it does not behave in the same manner in the wireless test-bed. We discuss the possible reasons of such unexpected behavior, and propose a tuning of some of its congestion indicators, as well as a simple enhancement of the control, in order to get rid of the undesirable effects we observed. In detail, our proposal consists of an additional mechanism for flow control, similar to the one TCP employs, of a more tightly computed no feedback timer, and of a parameter that rules the way TFRC backs-off when it detects a loss event. It aims at continuously matching user preferences and resource constraints imposed by the mobile environment. A point of strength of the proposed mechanism is represented by the user profiling procedure adopted. It foresees that the user has associated a set of preferences and requests which are automatically taken into account by the resource allocation and negotiation algorithm. More specifically, we develop a method that jointly decodes space time trellis coded modulation (STTCM) encoded signals and equalises the MIMO channels. The optimal solution for such a setup would require construction of a super-trellis that describes a finite state machine resulting from the combination of MIMO channel and STTCM trellises. However, the number of states in this super-trellis is typically gigantic and as such prohibits practical application. Our solution is based on sequential Monte Carlo technique (aka particle filter), which has gained much interest recently in the communications community. The structure of the STTCM code is incorporated into the proposal distribution of the particle filter. In case of two transmit antennas, it has been assumed that the two channels are uncorrelated. However, for four transmit antennas, the assumption is no longer justified. Therefore the new codes are found by examination of the average of the minimum squared Euclidean distance between all of the unitary matrices multiplied by various fading coefficients. The performance of the codes are simulated by computer and compared with the well-known cyclic group codes. However, the MIMO array receiver proposed in this study is based on a subspace-type joint space-time estimation algorithm, which does not need any power control or channel information. Furthermore, it is robust to channel estimation errors in the event of any unidentified or erroneous channel parameter. The powerful source compression involved with JPEG often leads to increased error susceptibility. In particular, corruption of the file headers may result in a transmitted file unreadable to the target application. To alleviate this problem, additional error protection may be provided for critical data segments, such as headers and control markers, whilst less error protection may be allocated to payload data. This may be accomplished by the proposed UEP scheme, which uses a powerful extended Golay code for the critical bits, and an extended Hamming code, having reduced decoding complexity and storage space requirements, for the less important payload bits. This model has been tried out in a vast series of large extension buildings obtaining successful results. The objective of the model is to facilitate the radio design work of a wireless LAN by means of straightforward calculations, because the use of statistical methods is very time consuming, and difficult to put in practice at most situations. Our model is based on a derivation of the free field propagation equation taking into account the building structure and its materials and it has been tested on a large scale design of a WLAN network of over 400 access points. The area of ad hoc networking is receiving increasing attention in recent years. Efficient dynamic routing is an important research challenge in such a network. In recent years, routing has been the most focused area in ad hoc networks research. On-demand routing, in particular, is widely developed in bandwidth constrained mobile wireless ad hoc networks because of its effectiveness and efficiency. A variety of new multipath routing protocols targeted at the ad hoc networking environment have been proposed. Multipath routing improves the throughput of ad hoc networks; it is a straightforward mechanism to recover from route losses in a dynamic network. In this paper we have considered a very well-known multipath routing protocol called ad hoc on-demand multipath distance vector routing (AOMDV) on both MAC layers, the standard IEEE 802.11 and a TDMA MAC protocol called evolutionary-TDMA (E-TDMA). Devices are co-ordinated by device management entities (DMEs), which are either Local DMEs, controlling devices within a single PDE subnetwork at a user's home or office. For example, or an overall root DME providing universal co-ordination and a single point of contact. While such a structure allows very flexible service delivery, it has serious security concerns, as the presence of signalling between root and local DMEs will allow the location of the user to be determined at all times.
