It then considers three related research questions, all in the context of an emerging economy, Bangladesh, where corporate governance has been a major concern. The first question is which firms are the leaders, in the sense that they are the first to update their governance practices? The second question is, what factors best explain changes in firms’ governance practices over time? The third question is what best explains differences in corporate governance practices across firms at a given point in time? Using a self-constructed composite index of governance quality comprising 148 elements, it was found that a subsidiary of a foreign company scored the highest in 11 of the 13 years, suggesting that the need for external equity capital may not be the primary motive for an improvement in firm-level governance in Bangladesh. Four firm-level characteristics, namely firm size, growth opportunities (measured by the book-to-market ratio), volatility and leverage, are significantly associated with changes in governance quality from one year to the next, while stock volatility is not associated with cross-sectional differences in CG quality across firms at a given point of time.","PeriodicalId":122971,"journal":{"name":"PSN: Other Political Economy: Development (Topic)","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-02-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131994096","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Indeed, one would expect an abundance of studies on Russian economic development. In the past, growth and performance in planned economies vis-a-vis the Western world did attract much attention. These types of studies contributed to two revolutions of development thinking, which are the ?big push? approach based on success of Soviet industrialization in 1930-s and the unexpected collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. However, recent performance of the Russian economy is less considered while much could be learned from studying the post-Soviet economic development. The key obstacle to the research in case of Russia is data availability. Detailed industrial data of labour, capital and output from early 1990-s onwards is not available both in the official statistics and in the literature. The present paper addresses this gap, providing detailed description of the newly developed dataset, which covers 34 industries in NACE 1.0 classification in 1995-2009. The paper also reports results of output growth rates decomposition into contributions of labour, capital and productivity (industrial growth accounting). Using more detailed data and better theoretical foundation it shows that the contribution of capital to economic growth in Russia is much more substantial that it has previously been reported in the literature until recently.","PeriodicalId":122971,"journal":{"name":"PSN: Other Political Economy: Development (Topic)","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126836340","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nevertheless, Venezuela currently combines an economy that is stagnant, despite high oil prices, with an increasingly authoritarian government. The authors argue that large oil rents that accrue to the state, together with a lack of formal and transparent mechanisms to facilitate citizen oversight, are a large part of the problem. They consider the nature of the fiscal contract between the Venezuelan government and its people. This has been characterized by increasing discretion of the executive; only a small share of the rents is now subject to political oversight within the framework of the budgetary system. The authors consider the case for direct distribution of rents, distinguishing it from a populist approach to transfers as effected through Venezuela’s misiones. They also report on focus group discussions of the direct- distribution approach and the political viability of direct transfers.","PeriodicalId":122971,"journal":{"name":"PSN: Other Political Economy: Development (Topic)","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-09-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115806552","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While the quantity of entrepreneurship in Argentina is high, its quality is low, given the high proportion of informal and necessity entrepreneurs. Income is found to play a greater role in determining probability of becoming an entrepreneur than parental wealth; entrepreneurship is, however, transmitted inter- generationally. Although it is found that Argentina promotes entrepreneurial values more than most Latin American countries, entrepreneurs face several obstacles. Finally, using panel data based on household surveys, the paper estimates the short and long-run effects of an increase in public employment on entrepreneurship, finding the effects to be negative and strong. Overall, the evidence suggests that changes in public policies and other areas are needed for Argentina to become an entrepreneurial economy.","PeriodicalId":122971,"journal":{"name":"PSN: Other Political Economy: Development (Topic)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128440000","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Investors are in turn struggling to understand the risks inherent in these new emerging market bonds, especially 'country risk,' the likelihood of adverse nation-based events such as uprisings. Country risk flows from deficits in the core human needs that fall under the human security rubric. Even so, the concept has never gained currency in perhaps the one area where its use might have a measurable impact: the global securities markets from which emerging economies are increasingly seeking funding. This paper will assess the use of the concept of human security as a proxy for gauging and classifying the country risk component of emerging market bonds. A secondary goal is to propose several specific markers of human security and propose how they might be combined into a quantitative index. Three case studies will be presented to assess how human security performs as a measure of country/credit risk: Ecuador, Cote d’Ivoire, and Vietnam. A multidisciplinary concept that has sought to refocus thinking on the status of vulnerable populations toward human-centred rather than military outcomes, human security was initially seen as a way to formulate more effective, institutionalized development strategies. Yet, while the concept has appealed to academic researchers, policy analysts and NGOs as an exciting though somewhat amorphous paradigm for thinking about development, human security has defied formal quantification. I will employ this concept, which had its origins in development theory, and test it as a vehicle for understanding the uncertainties in emerging market bond markets.","PeriodicalId":122971,"journal":{"name":"PSN: Other Political Economy: Development (Topic)","volume":"183 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-05-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121935362","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The concept of trust receipt operates as a variation of the principle of trust. A trust receipt is a written legal document between two entities; the first who borrows money to finance some business venture ('the entrustee') and the other who advances the money needed ('the entrustor') and holds legal interest in the asset(s) acquired until such a time as when the debt is paid. The entruster, who owns or holds absolute title or security interests over certain specified goods, documents or instruments, releases the same to the possession of the entrustee upon the latter’s execution and delivery to the entruster of a signed document called a 'trust receipt' wherein the entrustee binds himself to hold the designated goods, documents or instruments in trust for the entruster and to sell or otherwise dispose of the goods, documents or instruments with the obligation to turn over to the entruster the proceeds thereof to the extent of the amount owing to the entruster or as appears in the trust receipt or the goods, documents or instruments themselves if they are unsold or not otherwise disposed of, in accordance with the terms and conditions specified in the trust receipt. The paper examines the rights and obligations arising out of the use of trust receipts in Nigeria.","PeriodicalId":122971,"journal":{"name":"PSN: Other Political Economy: Development (Topic)","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-03-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130959992","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In addition to Hart (1971, 1973) it will discuss three writers who may be considered his intellectual forerunners. Each, to a greater or less degree, anticipated the idea of informal economic activity and described it in a particular historical period and place. They are the mid-Victorian journalist Henry Mayhew (London, c.1850), the libertarian economist P. T. Bauer (British West Africa, c.1948) and the economic anthropologist R. F. Salisbury (colonial New Guinea, c.1952-1963). The principal texts relied upon are Mayhew's monumental London Labour and the London Poor (4 vols, 1851-61), Bauer's Economics of Under-Developed Countries (1957) and Salisbury's From Stone to Steel (1962) and Vunamami: Economic Transformation in a Traditional Society (1970).","PeriodicalId":122971,"journal":{"name":"PSN: Other Political Economy: Development (Topic)","volume":"132 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-03-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132185840","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is part of an ongoing effort to place the unusually violent period of these two small British colonies in a greater Mediterranean and Colonial perspective, by providing macroeconomic aggregates. GDP estimates for the period 1921-1938 enable new interpretations regarding the islands’ economic growth and structural change. The estimates are converted into international currency units and a long run GDP series (1921-2008) is created to prove that the development level of the islands in the interwar period was much lower than what was previously thought, being poorer than Greece and Turkey. The islands’ performance is then evaluated in the context of South Eastern Europe, suggesting that the economic growth was slow considering the islands were far less exposed to the economic and political effects of the First World War. The ultimate reasons of growth performance differed: Cyprus experienced a prolonged agricultural crisis, but participated in the post-depression recovery through the rapid expansion of the copper mining industry, while Malta’s growth was slow due to a combination of declining British military expenditure and accelerated demographic growth. These differences notwithstanding, the islands were ultimately affected by common problems. Their small size, in combination with the islands’ status as British colonies, had a negative effect on their performance as global protectionism increased.","PeriodicalId":122971,"journal":{"name":"PSN: Other Political Economy: Development (Topic)","volume":"78 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116364410","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In some countries, it has become systemically important and, in many others, it is too big to be ignored. While it represents a small proportion of the global finance market (estimated at 1%-5% of global share), the Islamic finance industry has experienced double-digit rates of growth annually in recent years (estimated at 10%- 20% annual growth). Industry experts estimate that assets held under Islamic finance management doubled between 2007 and 2010 to reach around $1 trillion. This paper tries to note the main Principal of Islamic finance.
