This study is quantitative were pre-test and post-test used to collect the data. The writers applied a t-test to analyze the data. Based on the Equal variance column, in obtained t-count scores is 11.808 by computing table scores n1 + n1-2 = 23 + 23 - 2 = 44, then obtained t-table score is 2.05 and significant score is 0.000. Because the score of t-count is 11.808> t-table 2.05 and the significant score is 0.000 <α = 0.05, so that H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted. This means that the pretest writing score compared to the posttest writing score is different. This means that there are significant differences in writing pretest scores with posttest scores after the Group Investigation method. Another purpose of the study is to help the teachers to find out the most effective way of teaching listening in the classroom. This study was conducted in MTS Al-Hamid, and 46 students of two classes were selected as the sample participants. In choosing the sample, the writer used a cluster random sampling technique. The subjects were assigned as experimental and control groups. This research used post-test only toward the experimental and control group. Data were gathered through the listening test in both the control and experimental group. While the experimental group learned English by implementing the audiovisual method, the control group was instructed by the audiovisual method. In the end, the results were statistically analyzed. Based on the result, the use of audio-visual method had a positive effect on the enhancement of students listening comprehension.","PeriodicalId":122895,"journal":{"name":"English Language in Focus (ELIF)","volume":"101 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123252658","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It examines the quality of multiple-choice items in terms of the difficulty level, the discriminating power, and the effectiveness of distractors. The study employed a qualitative approach which also used a simple quantitative analysis to analyze the quality of the test items through the document analysis of the teacher’s English summative test and the students’ answer sheets. The result shows that the summative test has more easy items than difficult items with the ratio of 19:25:6 while they should be 1:2:1 for easy, medium, and difficult. In terms of the Discriminating Power, there are 3, 13, and 16 for excellent, Good, and satisfactory level, but there are 17 and 2 for poor and bad levels of Discriminating Power. There are 43 (21.5%) of all distractors which are dysfunctional which, in turns, makes the items too easy which also makes the items fail to discriminate the upper-group students from the lower ones. Therefore, the 43 dysfunctional distractors should be revised to alter the difficulty level and improve the discriminating power. This research is expected to serve as a reflective means for teachers to examine their own-made test to ensure the quality of their test items.","PeriodicalId":122895,"journal":{"name":"English Language in Focus (ELIF)","volume":"126 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125123936","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, the sample used is the students of grade XI SMA Muhammadiyah 25 Setiabudi Pamulang. The sample was from the class XI IPA 1 as the experimental class and XI IPA 2 as the control class. Each of them consists of 36 students. The writer used purposive sampling technique in determining the number of samples from the existing population. The method used was quantitative and the design used was quasi-experimental study. The instrument in this study was a written test. To ensure the reliability of the instrument, the writer uses a rubric in the assessment called analytic scoring adopted from John Anderson to assess student writing in pre-test and post-test. The findings of this study were the mean score of pre-test of experimental class students was 56.47 and the mean score of the student's post-test was 76.14. In contrast, the students’ pre-test mean score of the controlled class was 63.25 and the mean score for the post-test was 66.72. The significant effect was shown by the students’ post-test mean score of the experimental class which was treated by scaffolding technique was greater than the post-test mean score of the controlled which was not treated by scaffolding technique. The result of the statistical hypothesis test found that on significance level 0.000 < 0.005. Thus the H0 (Null Hypothesis) was rejected and the H1 (Alternative Hypothesis) was accepted. It proved that the application of scaffolding technique is effective towards the students’ skill in writing procedure text.","PeriodicalId":122895,"journal":{"name":"English Language in Focus (ELIF)","volume":"171 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134165377","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This research was conducted at SD Labschool FIP UMJ for about 3 months starting from June 2018 until August 2018. This study focuses on English teaching and learning process at 4th graders. The study applied a qualitative descriptive research method which used observation and documents as the instruments in collecting the data. The writers observed both the school and 4th grade class and used the syllabus, lesson plan and English textbook as the documents. The analysis of the data showed that the Islamic values had been being well-built in the area of the school together with the school activities. While in the class observation the writer found that the Islamic values were not being applied yet in the process of teaching and learning English, besides, it was also found that syllabus, lesson plan, and textbook did not insert any Islamic values at all either in the content of the materials or in the teaching and learning activities. Thus this research study concludes that the Islamic values did not fully exist yet in the process of teaching English to the 4th graders of SD Labschool FIP UMJ.","PeriodicalId":122895,"journal":{"name":"English Language in Focus (ELIF)","volume":"31 4-6","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120894287","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
