It is mainly regarding listening that is hypothesized to have a higher influence on acquisition of foreign language. The aim of this study was to identify the common listening challenges experienced by Indonesian EFL learners. This research was practical research using descriptive methods of quantitative research. Subject of the study were subsequently randomly chosen, in which EFL learners at even semesters become the representative. In collecting data, the researchers used a self-structured questionnaire that refers to three primary categories: (1) the listener, (2) the passage, and (3), the physical setting. The data was then statistically evaluated by referring to Likert type scales, to discover useful information. After all, the finding showed that distortions, lexis recognition, phonological awareness, complexity of the passage and the speech rate highlighted a high degree response of common listening challenges. The significance of the study expected to contribute learners with a better understanding and propose new ideas for acceptable teaching listening.","PeriodicalId":122895,"journal":{"name":"English Language in Focus (ELIF)","volume":"93 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-02-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125084196","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We cannot deny the failure is caused by many problems. The success of the learning is involved in complex things, especially in the lecturer’s ability in learning and teaching. Such as the interesting material, the using of media, the learning approach and strategy, the classroom management, school environment, completely facilitation, and many other aspects. The objective of this research is to find out the effect of using suggestopedia to the students’ speaking ability. The group had taught by using suggestopedia. It had conducted a pre-testing them first, then gave them treatment using suggestopedia and the last conducted a post-test. The instrument was used oral performance test. The criteria of the performance test scoring were a fluency, accuracy, content, and pronunciation. According to the result of statistical calculation, it is obtained the value of (t-observation) is 8,387 and the value of “tc” (t-critical) from the df (31) on degree of significance of 0,05 % is 1.6955. Based on the finding of this study it can be concluded that using suggestopedia method in increasing students’ speaking ability is effective.","PeriodicalId":122895,"journal":{"name":"English Language in Focus (ELIF)","volume":"100 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-02-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123305926","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Writing is a process of formulating and organizing ideas in right words, delivering the writer’s purpose, and presenting them on a piece of paper. The objective of this research is to know the effectiveness of TBLT (Task Based Language Teaching) toward ESP students’ writing achievement at STIE Muhammadiyah Tanjung Redeb. Based on the research result on SPSS 24 calculation, it showed that t-value was 16,678, while t-table was 2,045 in the 5% of alpha significance level and 32 degrees of freedom (df). Thus, it indicates that the t-value is higher than t-table (16,678>1.693 and can be concluded that there was a significant difference between the two means. In addition, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) of the study was accepted and TBLT (Task Based Language Teaching) was an effective method in teaching writing.","PeriodicalId":122895,"journal":{"name":"English Language in Focus (ELIF)","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-02-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121544720","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The design of the study was quasi-experimental. The samples were 76 students of the 8th grade who were taken randomly using purposive random sampling. The samples were classified into two groups: 39 students in the experimental group and 37 in the control one. The data collected through a pretest and a posttest which had been proved valid and reliable by ANATES. In between, the teaching of 20 prefixes and 20 suffixes were done in both groups but with a higher frequency of occurrence in the experimental class. The finding showed that the experimental group got a higher mean score than the control one, and the statistical calculation found that there was a significant difference between the mean scores of the two groups. It indicated that the morphological analysis technique is effective to teach vocabulary to the 8th-grade students of SMPN 13 Kota Tangerang Selatan, Banten.","PeriodicalId":122895,"journal":{"name":"English Language in Focus (ELIF)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-03-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121633367","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
