Given the high operational costs of modern wind tunnels and the required instrumentation, the PIV system design emphasis concentrates on portability, modularity and reliability. Typical applications require large observation distances (>5 m) and relatively large observation areas (>600/spl times/400 mm/sup 2/). The recent introduction of digital imaging allows a rapid availability of the PIV data and feed-back during tunnel operation. The flexibility of these portable systems is illustrated by presenting several results of recent PIV applications: (1) blade/vortex interactions on a model helicopter rotor, (2) the flow downstream of an aircraft model in landing configuration in the 6/spl times/8 m/sup 2/ test section of the DNW Large Low Speed Testing facility (German-Dutch Wind Tunnel) and (3) the flow in the slat region of a two-dimensional high-lift air-foil. In each case the advantage of PIV in providing instantaneous velocity maps is apparent when compared to the time-averaged result. Current development efforts of extending the PIV method to provide three-dimensional data in wind tunnel environments are also given.","PeriodicalId":122871,"journal":{"name":"ICIASF'97 Record. Based on the calculation of physico-chemical processes taking place in nozzles of classical facilities it is inferred that the chemical air composition differs noticeably from the natural air composition even in solving the problem of producing and retaining the gas in the plenum chamber at ultrahigh temperatures and pressures (T/sub 0//spl ges/7000 K, P/sub 0//spl ges/4/spl middot/10/sup 8/ Pa). The analysis carried out reveals a distinct advantage of MHD-gas acceleration facilities in solving the stated problem. A set of equations of magnetogasdynamics and multitemperature physico-chemical kinetics which underlie the computation program is presented. The channels of energy transport from the electromagnetic field to the gas at different gas densities are considered. The program was compiled using the experimental data obtained in the TsAGI MHD-gas acceleration hypersonic wind tunnel. The report presents the calculated data on gas acceleration regimes in a wide spectrum of initial conditions and electrodynamic parameters. The consideration of nonequilibrium physico-chemical processes in the MHD-channel and in the secondary nozzle makes it possible to state that the nonequilibrium effects facilitate considerably the reproduction of a natural chemical air composition and a static temperature in the facility test section. The influence of alkali seeds on the induction time and hydrogen burning process in the scramjet combustion chamber is evaluated. Possible technical approaches to the realization of calculated versions of MHD-accelerators are analyzed.","PeriodicalId":122871,"journal":{"name":"ICIASF'97 Record. Instationarities in the flow can be studied with this technique where both spatial and temporal information of the entire flow field can be obtained, in providing the simultaneous visualisation of two dimensional streamline pattern in unsteady flow. This new technique of PIV was developed using a continuous laser and a Bragg cell as optical shutter. A Bragg cell is used to switch the laser beam, with an acousto-optic modulation, creating single and periodic laser pulses by the use of an electrical input signal. To record the images of the flow field, a CCD video sensor that uses a frame memory buffer, is used. A synchronisation device ensures that each laser pulse generated by the modulator really occurs in a different field of the image. To process the two fields, a cross-correlation program was developed using Fast Fourier Transform algorithms. The images are processed with Gaussian scheme for sub-pixel interpolation.","PeriodicalId":122871,"journal":{"name":"ICIASF'97 Record. The measurements, on store models in free fall in still air, was motivated by the availability of a fast framing CCD (FF-CCD) camera under development. The store models were coated with a pressure sensitive paint (PSP) incorporating platinum meso-tetra (Pentafluorphenyl) Porphyrin (PtTFPP) dye having a luminescent lifetime of approximately 20 /spl mu/sec at atmospheric pressure. Changes in paint lifetime were induced by injecting inert gas in the vicinity of the falling store. The test region was illuminated with a standard, frequency-doubled Nd:YAG laser. The luminescence of the paint was acquired using the FF-CCD camera which employs a unique focal plane array having the facility to store images on the array itself. The camera system can acquire images at rates up to 1 MHz. The luminescent lifetimes were measured using rapid lifetime determination, a time domain technique which involves monitoring the luminescence of the paint following pulsed excitation. Lifetime measurements are presented for the store model in free fall. Measurement error sources are discussed. Characteristics of an improved measurement system are proposed.","PeriodicalId":122871,"journal":{"name":"ICIASF'97 Record. Experimental results for a Mach 3 2-D flow are presented. Accuracy within 5% was attained. Also presented is a fiber optic combined pressure/skin friction gage for similar environments. The skin friction balance design is a non-nulling cantilevered beam with a sensing head attached to the end and is similar to other designs previously constructed by Schetz and his graduate students. The sensing head is aligned with the plane of the wall so that it is exposed only to the shear force. The cantilever beam deflects under the load due to the shearing force, and the resulting strain can be measured. In previous designs, either foil or semiconductor strain gages have been used. Fiber optic gages offer to increase resolution while substantially reducing temperature sensitivity.","PeriodicalId":122871,"journal":{"name":"ICIASF'97 Record. The variation problem of the design of the supersonic 2D asymmetric nozzles with maximum thrust at given lift power and given size limitations was solved. The method of characteristics was used. Structures of flow and power characteristics in nozzles are numerically investigated at transonic and supersonic speeds of external flow. Power characteristics and three-dimensional phenomena of 2D asymmetric nozzles were experimentally and numerically studied.","PeriodicalId":122871,"journal":{"name":"ICIASF'97 Record. The first part of the report is devoted to Blade Deformation Measuring System (BDMS), which was developed to measure parameters of blade movement and its bending-twisting deformation. This part describes the measurement system and the basic measurement principles. Results of the laboratory investigations are discussed as well. Pre prototype of the BDMS was investigated in TsAGI's T-101 wind tunnel. BDMS provides twisting deformation measurement with mean squared deviation (MSD) about 3-6 angular minutes and linear displacement measurements with MSD about 0.3-0.6 mm for real scale helicopter rotor. The second part describes results of the evaluation tests with Pressure Sensitive Paint, which were conducted by pressure measurement extension of the BDMS. The first results obtained during the wind tunnel tests are presented and compared with pressure port data.","PeriodicalId":122871,"journal":{"name":"ICIASF'97 Record. The objective of the development and testing of this prototype sensor system was to determine the feasibility of operating an optical sensor in such a hostile environment. In this work a photonic sensor was utilized to monitor the exhaust gas temperature (EGT) of an OV-10D aircraft engine. The sensor has successfully flown over 50 hours and proven to be immune to source fluctuations, surface deterioration of the optical element (located inside the sensor head), and able to withstand and operate in normal flight conditions as well as sustained severe flight conditions with forces exceeding 4 g's. Potential commercial uses for this sensor include monitoring temperature for aeropropulsion system control, military vehicle and naval engine control, conventional and nuclear power plant monitoring, and industrial plant monitoring.","PeriodicalId":122871,"journal":{"name":"ICIASF'97 Record. It is presently equipped with a Laval nozzle (supersonic), a perforated test section (transonic) and a two-dimensional adaptive (subsonic) test section. The latter can perform 2D adaptive tests on wing profiles using the Cauchy integral formula for wall adaptation, as well as 2D wall adaptation for 3D models utilizing the Wedemeyer/Lamarche (VKI) procedure. For both cases the wall adaptation was successful. The 3D force results compare quite well nominally interference-free results and to results from another adaptive test section. The pressure distribution from the wing profile tests agree quite well with theoretical results. For the 3D model, residual wall interferences were determined. It was found that the wall interferences had been reduced to nearly zero on the centreline of the test section by wall adaptation. Spanwise averages of the residual wall interferences have been used for further corrections.","PeriodicalId":122871,"journal":{"name":"ICIASF'97 Record. This technique allowed the visualisation of the instantaneous transonic flow in the inter-blade passage of a rotating annular cascade at engine conditions. By means of photographic recording of flow tracers and specialised image processing, the instantaneous velocity over the whole field was measured with estimated accuracy between 2 and 5%. Furthermore, the vorticity map was created by means of differentiation and linear interpolation on a Delaunay triangular grid. From the superposition of sequential frames, a steady state velocity map was reconstructed.","PeriodicalId":122871,"journal":{"name":"ICIASF'97 Record.
