Multi-tenancy database has been prevalent for hosting multiple tenants within a single DBMS while enabling effective resource sharing. Providing such performance goals is challenging for providers as they must balance the performance that they can deliver to tenants and the operating costs. In such database systems, a key functionality for service providers is database replication, which is useful for availability, performance, elasticity, and quality of service. This paper presents RepliC, an approach to database replication in the cloud with quality of service, elasticity, and support tomulti-tenancy. In order to evaluate RepliC, some experiments that measure the quality of service and elasticity are presented. Our experiment results confirm that RepliC ensures the quality of service with small SLA violations, while using resources efficiently.","PeriodicalId":122639,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Fifth International Conference on Utility and Cloud Computing","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-11-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115434913","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Benefits like scalability and cost reduction by pay per use agreements are accompanied by potential harm to the users data. Since existing cloud solutions can be considered synonymous with unknown locations and potentially hostile environments security protection objectives can not be guaranteed. Motivated by cloud's potential we propose a way to get rid of this drawback. We present work in progress of an approach that enables users to benefit from cloud computing and retain data sovereignty by federating the users own resources. More precisely we present initial protocol design thoughts for this federation and an extension of the OCCI specification for the flexible description of own and foreign services.","PeriodicalId":122639,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Fifth International Conference on Utility and Cloud Computing","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-11-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124427757","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We redefine high availability (HA) as the dynamic use of virtual machines to keep services available to users, making it a subset of elasticity (the dynamic use of virtual machines). This makes it possible to investigate autoscalers that simultaneously address HA and elasticity. We present and evaluate autoscalers within this plug gable system that are HA-aware and Quality-of-Service (QoS)-aware for web applications written in different programming languages. Hot spares can also be utilized to provide both HA and improve QoS to web users. Within the open source AppScale PaaS, hot spares can increase the amount of web traffic that the QoS-aware autoscaler serves to users by up to 32%. As this auto scaling system operates at the PaaS layer, it is able to control virtual machines and be cost-aware when addressing HA and QoS. This cost awareness uses Spot Instances within Amazon EC2 to reduce the cost of machines acquired by 91%, in exchange for increased startup time. This plug gable auto scaling system facilitates the investigation of new auto scaling algorithms by others that can take advantage of metrics provided by different levels of the cloud stack.","PeriodicalId":122639,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Fifth International Conference on Utility and Cloud Computing","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-11-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123177296","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the emergency of cloud computing introduces new opportunities along with new challenges. In cloud, a monitoring proxy can be set up by service provider due to the ownership of cloud infrastructure. The collected data allows for service provider to estimate the size of database which may be a black-box to them. We claim that the relationship between query performance and data size can be captured by a complexity function. One can leverage such function to estimate table size if given query execution time. In this paper, we propose a fine grained framework called Database Size Estimation based on Complexity (DSEC) to estimate the size of databases from the perspective of service provider. In particular, we argue that only a small fraction of tables impact service performance significantly, which are referred to as \"important tables\". We illustrate \"important table\" locating process on three typical benchmarks: RUBiS, RUBBoS and TPC-W. Finally, we describe extensive experiments on TPC-W (the most challenging one) to evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of DSEC in various scenarios.","PeriodicalId":122639,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Fifth International Conference on Utility and Cloud Computing","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-11-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121831524","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We study a scenario where a substrate provider (or a potential intermediate broker or reseller) wants to optimize the embedding of these so-called CloudNets by migrating them to more suitable locations. For instance, such re-embeddings can be useful if the CloudNets were requested at short notice and initially placed heuristically. Subsequent optimizations can, e.g., reduce the peak resource loads in the network by spreading CloudNets across the infrastructure or save energy by moving CloudNets together and switching off unused components. We present the generic mathematical programming algorithm used in our CloudNet prototype to compute optimal embeddings. For example, this algorithm supports different objective functions (such as load minimization or energy conservation), arbitrary resource combinations and the mapping of multiple virtual nodes of a CloudNet to a single substrate node, cost-aware migrations, and it can deal with all link types that arise in practice (e.g., fullduplex or even wireless or wired broadcast links with multiple endpoints). Of course, such rigorous CloudNet optimizations are time consuming, and we report on the time complexities obtained from our experiments with our network virtualization prototype architecture. It turns out that optimizing CloudNets over moderate sized infrastructures is feasible, even for scenarios with high flexibility and without tuning the solver software to speed up computations further.","PeriodicalId":122639,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Fifth International Conference on Utility and Cloud Computing","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-11-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127112718","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The most attractive aspect of cloud technology is its elasticity, enabling scalable infrastructure to suit usage requirements over fine-grained measurements of time. By deploying their service on the cloud, the service provider alleviates the need for large initial investments of physical hardware. Infrastructure is provisioned whenever it is needed. As a result, the operating costs incurred by the service provider can be difficult to quantify. We develop an algebraic specification of computing as a service from the perspective of the service provider. Modelling key aspects of the infrastructure and the way it is provisioned, we quantify monetary costs based on the rental of virtual hardware and the volume of data processed.","PeriodicalId":122639,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Fifth International Conference on Utility and Cloud Computing","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-11-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133311806","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This prevents a genuine pay-per-use model for the consumer and effectively leads to over-reservation and inadequate tariffs especially for short-term, small-scale computations. We propose an economically motivated compensation approach to increase the granularity and utility of reserved computation and storage services. The outcome is a highly-virtual sing cloud resource broker. It consists of a fiduciary resource service marketplace and a consumer-configurable virtual machine for resource sharing. The system supports hierarchically nested virtualization with dynamically adjustable resource limits for fine-grained structural, temporal and vertical-spatial scalability. We argue that cloud computing providers should embrace the recently developed hierarchical virtualization and vertical scalability technologies in order to improve the utility and quality of experience for on-demand infrastructure service consumers.","PeriodicalId":122639,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Fifth International Conference on Utility and Cloud Computing","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-11-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133140833","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

New schemes have been proposed, however, their evaluation has been insufficient due to a lack of appropriate namespace metadata traces. Specifically, no Big Data storage system metadata trace is publicly available and existing ones are a poor replacement. We studied publicly available traces and one Big Data trace from Yahoo! and note some of the differences and their implications to metadata management studies. We discuss the insufficiency of existing evaluation approaches and present a first step towards a statistical metadata workload model that can capture the relevant characteristics of a workload and is suitable for synthetic workload generation. We describe Mimesis, a synthetic workload generator, and evaluate its usefulness through a case study in a least recently used metadata cache for the Hadoop Distributed File System. Simulation results show that the traces generated by Mimesis mimic the original workload and can be used in place of the real trace providing accurate results.","PeriodicalId":122639,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Fifth International Conference on Utility and Cloud Computing","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-11-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125772622","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The chip reliability testing process usually also is not inclusive of test cases quantifying the chip reliability in the presence of small scale thermal cycles. However, a good number of in-field chip failures are attributed to the consequences of thermal cycles. Thus, it is imperative to include their effects into the processor voltage and frequency selection process. Our work focuses on developing an integrated processor thermal and performance management system centered on novel polynomial time scheduling algorithms that achieve minimal thermal cycle guarantees in soft real time environments. Our scheme leverages application awareness and runtime monitoring for improving the lifetime of the chip, while achieving considerable energy savings. Our scheme shows a significant reduction in thermal cycles and peaks, leading to longer chip life expectations. Our results indicate a 10 fold increase in the expected chip lifetime and 50% energy savings compared to operation at the rated maximum voltage and frequency.","PeriodicalId":122639,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Fifth International Conference on Utility and Cloud Computing","volume":"83 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-11-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130099028","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

No filtering categorization has been currently proposed. Numerous lists of banned, unethical and objectionable words have been developed with limited user satisfaction. Lists are usually manually generated, with some programmable extensibility for online forums and public newsgroups. We define a tool and methodology to categorize the censor data. We statistically grow words in the categorized data and tag the hidden neutral words with meaning in context. Using Computational Linguistics tools and modifying them to suit our means, we analyze sample text from gigabytes of email newsgroup dataset over Cloud Servers. A sample result dataset of the most frequently used words breaking the norms in recent cloud communication is presented in the results in broad categories. The categories separate cloud-server data found in newsgroups related to internet crimes, fraud, theft, anti-state elements, and other material of legal importance. Thus this study demonstrates a tag cloud of most frequent critical words in communications from legal and ethical point-of-view in the current scenario of cloud databases.","PeriodicalId":122639,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Fifth International Conference on Utility and Cloud Computing","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-11-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122955053","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
