This is particularly relevant in mining operations in parts of the world with variable safety standards. To achieve this, affordable and robust structural health monitoring (SHM) is required. Photogrammetry is an image processing technique that can be used to measure deformation in geomechanical structures, enabling the reconstruction of displacement and strain fields with high accuracy (up to one-hundredth of a pixel). The use of standard cameras makes photogrammetry an inexpensive approach to automated SHM. However, while photogrammetric techniques have proven successful in laboratories and controlled environments, further development is needed to deal with a broader range of environments. This paper outlines recent research to overcome limitations of the Digital Image Correlation (DIC) photogrammetry technique, with the goal of achieving robust, low cost, automated SHM systems.","PeriodicalId":122465,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Region 10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"35 4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131339287","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of the paper is to develop a `Rescue Robot' that inherits cognitive framework for life detection through rubble. Bangladesh is a developing country, and the purpose of the project is to construct the country's very own rescue machine that can crawl through debris of earthquake and landslides and maintain signal strength using boosters at minimum cost. The robot also has an audio/video monitoring ability with the aid of a digital camera with an adjacent LED torch. The motion of the vehicle is remotely controlled and communication is done through the use of Wi-Fi beacons. This robot can provide a simpler, more reliable and cheaper way to traverse in all types of terrain and locate victims using carbon dioxide sensor.","PeriodicalId":122465,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Region 10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129236859","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The archipelagic nature of the Philippine and its tropical climate provide a thriving habitat for numerous microalgal species. The strategic deployment of algal cultivation sites in the country require a multi-criteria decision analysis based on available natural resources, social aspect, installed plants, and fuel demand per region. Hence, a spatial analytic hierarchy process was proposed to select potential cultivation regional sites in the Philippines. Due to the limiting attribute of the available natural resources and climactic type in each region, in this study, the available natural resources criterion was given more weight compared to other criteria. The results revealed that the preferred cultivation sites for the Philippines' group of islands were Region IV-A for Luzon, Region VII for Visayas, and Region XII for Mindanao. Future work includes the use of geographic information system coupled with analytic hierarchy process in identifying specific potential cultivation sites per region.","PeriodicalId":122465,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Region 10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123350385","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The SL emitter used in our wind-sensing lidar is an integrated diode laser with a tapered (semiconductor) amplifier. This paper describes two embodiments of the patented wind lidar technology and presents experimental results that evaluate the wind sensors' performance. Due to compactness, portability and cost-efficiency, SL based wind sensors have a strong potential in a number of applications such as wind turbine control, wind resource assessment, and micrometeorology (e.g. as alternative to the construction of meteorological towers with anemometers and wind vanes).","PeriodicalId":122465,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Region 10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122035481","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Ever since, Kobe citizens had been active in disaster-related activities, calling on their personal experiences and strong personal commitment. Here we report on an initiative of Kobe Institute of Computing (KIC). Our system aims at giving citizens a monitoring capability of environmental radiation levels, to allow an independent confirmation besides the information provided by the government. The system is based on a newly developed, extremely high performance radiation detector, that enables rapid but precise measurements even on moving vehicles. We describe the technology, and we also show test results of real-time monitoring experiments obtained through collaboration with the NPO organization “Bikers Emergency Response Team” (BERT) [1]. We further consider the problem of efficient coverage of areas with the monitors, and for future monitoring work we propose a quantitative formulation of the route planning, that can be solved as a numerical optimization problem.","PeriodicalId":122465,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Region 10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115201885","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

When presented as a landslide inventory map, the detected landslides will be useful for evaluating susceptibility maps accuracy, or even for use as one of the causative factors for the map itself. The proposed method demonstrated very promising performance, with 100% precision and recall in detecting potential landslides. The method also recorded 94.29% true negative rate when filtering out non-landslide regions, thus providing a strong platform for the detection of actual landslide regions after the incorporation of geometrical and landslide-specific features in the future.","PeriodicalId":122465,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Region 10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"66 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117071261","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Conventional equipments for measuring colorimetric assays are bulky and expensive, making them unsuitable for usage in low-resource settings. This paper proposes a novel approach for taking colorimetric measurements using a miniaturized spectrophotometer prototype attached to a smartphone. The proposed frugal design is portable, easy-to-use and costs less than US$15. High dynamic range imaging is used to process the spectrums captured by smartphone camera. The proposed algorithm supports JPEG image format, allowing the prototype to be used with a wide variety of smartphone models. In the experimental study, spectrums of color dye and milk samples are imaged. Spectrums obtained are found to be well correlated with the sample color and concentration. By providing accurate and fast measurements, smartphone spectrophotometry enables effective application of colorimetric diagnostic techniques in low-resource settings.","PeriodicalId":122465,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Region 10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123938529","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Members of the civil society are slowly awakening to the ill-effects of inefficient waste disposal and are trying to contribute to the well-being and maintenance of the world we live in. While rules and regulations have been formulated by the governing bodies for segregating waste, efforts in this direction have not translated into a veritable pro-environmental behaviour among citizens. Pro-environmental behaviour (PEB) refers to behaviour that benefits the environment or harms the environment as little as possible. Many social processes and norms exert influence over our behavior. According to a popular thesis on human behaviour, known as the theory of planned behaviour (TPB), an individual's intention towards behavior, subjective norms and perceived control over his/her behaviour together leads to intentions and behavior [1]. School children exhibit a responsibility to induce changes in social norms for environmental friendly behaviours and are also natural early adopters of technology in this endeavor. We explore the use of persuasive technologies where behaviour-oriented design techniques are employed to change behaviors of users through persuasion and social influence. In this paper, we propose an approach for designing persuasive technologies for stoking pro-environmental behaviour and initiating waste segregation at source.","PeriodicalId":122465,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Region 10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"64 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134067531","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Even with countries in sufficient supply of water from the nature, desalination is crucial for residents in remote and isolated regions such as islands. Production capacity of a desalination plant depends on the number of beneficiaries. When the number of beneficiaries is on the order of 100, microgrid based desalination plant can be a competitive solution. This work presents a desalination process conducted in a microgrid based desalination management platform. Desalination plant operated by renewable energy is implemented and tested. Since most of electric power consumed in the platform is used for high pressure pump, it is our main concern to observe the relation between the high pressure pump and other controllable device(s), e.g., the retentate valve. It is found from the observations that the retentate valve can affect the operation of desalination process by means of its openness.","PeriodicalId":122465,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Region 10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126964280","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
