When destructive events like quakes and mine collapses happen, often the victims do not get instant help to communicate with the outside world. An automated as well as manually operated robotic framework can be proven very useful in rescue operations and disaster management. The explicit design of the robot proposed here is meant to provide a definite map of the traversed area dynamically and it can also follow a specific map to reach a destination. Consequently, an HMI (Human Machine Interface) has been developed to control the substantial movement of the navigator from a moderate distance. Effective sensory modules and a stable control mechanism have been developed with the provision of consistent video feedback. In addition, the system is provided with an intelligence to detect human existence based on audio-visual feedback and an efficient self-protective design. The most unique feature of the system is if in any case the communication link with the host breaks down, the robot would return to the initial place following the traversed pathway which avoids the risk of losing the device. The system has been tested in different set-ups under several challenging environments and the results obtained affirm its reliability.","PeriodicalId":122465,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Region 10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124632620","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These conventional sources are bound to deplete in the near future and hence there is a need for producing energy from renewable energy sources like solar, wind, geothermal, tidal etc. Technologies involving renewable energy are a growing subject of concern. The problem is the excessive pollution caused by conventional sources of energy and their impact on the environment. In particular, one of the main sources of pollution is harmful gases emitting out of automobiles. Wind energy is one among the renewable energy sources which is implemented in large scale energy production. A large amount of research has been done in this field to harness energy and power houses and other amenities are nearby wind farms. The purpose of this study is to consider the use of wind energy along with conventional energy sources to power automobiles. Specifically the concept of an impulse turbine mounted on the chassis of a typical vehicle structure is considered. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is used to validate the concept and also come up with a design that maximizes energy generation by such turbines.","PeriodicalId":122465,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Region 10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124159695","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Statistical computation is used to determine the cases of the combination of outages that occurred at the same time. This paper presents the development of a search algorithm for contingency case identification which helps the operator to decide on what should be done to the system and return to its normal operation when outages occurred. The study focuses on IEEE bus 6 system that was modeled and simulated on MatPower, making the line / load flows as the predetermined values of the database. The MATLAB software codes are responsible on the search algorithm for contingency case identification. The modeling of the system is satisfactory because the values of % difference are within the specified ±5% tolerance. It is concluded that the case search algorithm is working properly on the IEEE 6-bus system.","PeriodicalId":122465,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Region 10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122173412","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The system is composed of a commercially-available plastic box where the mushrooms grow, and an automated monitor and control of air and soil humidity and air temperature for optimum mushroom growth. It is purposely designed to grow in a box to enable the easy stacking of boxes in a space-constrained urban place. The power can be sourced out from a commercial power or from the sun light using solar photovoltaic energy harvesting technology making it a standalone, ready-to-deploy food source in a disaster-hit area. Aside from organic substrate and mushroom seed, each box is equipped with low cost set of electronic components, small fan and a humidifier which facilitate the automated cultivation process. This system is not only useful for urban farming and disaster-hit-area deployment but also valuable for research purposes. It has an option to interface into a computer in a laboratory setting to precisely monitor, analyze and determine the factors that influences the optimum growth of mushroom. This approach of farming not only enabled the space-constraint farming but also improves the yield of harvest because of well-controlled growing environment. The proposed system is successfully designed, implemented and tested.","PeriodicalId":122465,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Region 10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132407050","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The first P, the profit is the main concern of the stakeholders especially the company directors, while the other two Ps, people and planet, have frequently been manipulated by special interest group and other seed oil producers to ruin the image of palm oil industry. Workers in palm oil mills are said to be forced to work in extremely polluted and very hot working area. As one of the source of workplace pollution and heat, the production technologies developed in producing crude palm oil need to be investigated. Therefore, this article aim for two main objectives; firstly to identify the workers' level of satisfaction against their workplace ambient, focusing on three dimensions of ambient, namely the workplace air quality, workplace odour and workplace temperature. The second purpose is to compare which production technology, based on three types of sterilizer, possesses the least detrimental effect on workplace ambient. The result shows that the level of satisfaction on the three dimensions of workplace ambient is more than 4.5 out of 7 Likert scale, which implied that the workers are somehow satisfied with their workplace ambient denying the claim of extreme workplace ambient and forced labour practice in the Malaysia Government related palm oil mills. In detail, the workplace air quality satisfaction level is 4.939, workplace odour satisfaction level is 4.538 and workplace temperature satisfaction level is 4.599. Comparison shows that the air quality satisfaction level is significantly associated to the technology being used. The highest air quality satisfaction is associated to horizontal sterilizer followed by vertical sterilizer and continuous sterilizer is associated to the lowest ambient satisfaction. This finding explains why most mills refuse to change to new technology. In term of workplace odour and temperature satisfaction, no significant differences are found.","PeriodicalId":122465,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Region 10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133130552","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
