While the base station is located in places that people can get to easily, sensors nodes are usually placed evenly in remote areas. By observing environmental data collected by sensor nodes, this system helps anticipating and preventing unexpected disasters such as floods and earthquakes. However, the lifetime of the whole system is unpredictable since wireless nodes have a limited energy source (e.g. batteries) that can run out at any time, while data transmission between nodes takes a huge amount of energy. This paper considers to specify an optimal base station location that provides the longest network lifetime. A modified integrated greedy method and a heuristic and greedy combinational method are proposed for finding the base station location. We experimented and compared to existing methods over 30 randomly created data sets. The experimental results show a significant improvement in the quality of the found base station locations.","PeriodicalId":122465,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Region 10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133152207","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, as first generation biodiesels are derived from food crops, the concern on food versus fuel heightens. As such, algal biodiesel is perceived as a solution to this problem, due to its lesser land requirement while having high oil yield compared to biofuels derived from conventional feedstocks. As the Philippines is considered as a thriving habitat for numerous microalgae species in the tropics, it offers a big potential for algae biofuel production. However, like any other bioenergy system, algal biofuels require natural resource consumption and entails environmental impact. Hence, a life cycle assessment approach is proposed in this study to assess the current microalgae cultivation setup in the Philippines. A validation study is conducted to compare the results of an aquaculture setup in the Philippines and a cultivation system by Khoo et al. (2011). The functional unit used is 1 ton algal biodiesel. The results of the study revealed that the cultivation system found in the Philippines has performed well as compared to Khoo et al. (2011), in terms of the impact assessment and energy consumption. However, the study also found that the energy return on energy invested (EROEI) of the two models were less than the benchmark value of one. Thus, the result of this study can be used to improve the EROEI of the algal biodiesel life cycle in the Philippines.","PeriodicalId":122465,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Region 10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133951726","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Malaria is a tropical disease that is severely under-reported or misdiagnosed due to lack of physicians. A wireless digital microscope capable of automatic image acquisition, image signal processing, wireless communication for telepathology and automated malaria detection is presented in this paper with potential to alleviate the problem. The digital microscope can help detect malaria infection and also indicate the level of infection from a Giemsa stained blood smear. A medical report containing the image(s) can also be electronically transmitted for expert second opinion to a well-staffed and well-equipped but distant hospital. We show how this new tool can help take telemedicine to the remote villages or hilly towns, and significantly enhance current Malaria detection rates.","PeriodicalId":122465,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Region 10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"167 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126062599","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It offers high oil yield per land area compared to the first and second generation biofuel feedstock. Given the tropical climate and the archipelagic structure of the Philippine islands, it provides a thriving habitat for more than a thousand species of microalgae. Hence, abundance of microalgae species are found in the country. However, the archipelagic structure of the country also may come as a disadvantage as the transportation of biofuels may require varying shipping routes. In life-cycle assessment of biofuels, transportation is one of the sources of environmental emissions. Thus, minimizing the distance travelled by the ship can dramatically reduce the energy usage and environmental impact of the transportation process. This study proposes an ant colony optimization (ACO) method in determining the optimal route between the different ports in the Philippines. The results in the study showed that the choice of vehicle used has significant impacts on the total shipping distance travelled. This study can be further expanded with the inclusion of time windows.","PeriodicalId":122465,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Region 10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125939904","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Energy is abundant in the earth and the source is the sun. This paper focuses on small scale outdoor lighting systems. This is a stand-alone lighting system that gets power from the sun by using a solar module during daytime. It has automatic switching and dimmer photosensor that operates when there is no light from the sun detected. However, storing more energy in the battery is one challenge. Currents of high value that is enough to charge the battery safely is required and depends on the amount of light energy from the sun. Stationary modules will only have maximum current at noon. The researchers included a tracker system to follow the sun's position so the current is higher throughout the day. To know which design is better, the researchers conducted a test that determines the performance of with tracker and without a tracker. Another test will be conducted regarding with the dimmer. The energy consumption of the LED light will be observed by using without dimmer and with dimmer. The result shows that current boosts the charging when tracker is ON. Dual axis trackers can compensate for the energy used by the motors for tracking. The auto-dimmer saves the charge used in the battery while supplying the appropriate light in the surrounding.","PeriodicalId":122465,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Region 10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127147651","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A pH test strip which has four (4) test pads changes its color when it is dipped in a sample solution. The color change is compared to the color chart to identify the pH value of the sample solution. The purpose of this study is to extract the parameter of an optoelectronic pH sensor based on the hue absorbance of the pH test strip and be implemented on Simulation Program with Integrated Circuit Emphasis (SPICE). Through experiments using a devised sensor module, highest linearity is obtained when the ILED is 20 mA. The sensitivity of the device at pad 1 is 0.4217 mV/pH with a correlation coefficient of 0.8177, pad 2 is 0.3667 V/pH with a correlation coefficient of 0.9597, pad 3 is 0.2659 V/pH with a correlation coefficient of 0.0.9923, and pad 4 is 0.0347 V/pH with a correlation coefficient of 0.9948. It outputs the RGB Hue levels (in voltage) of the pH test strip. Optoelectric characteristics of the pH sensor are described by the result acquired in the experiments on parameter extraction. The transconductance of the device is derived based on the phototransistor current and pH-dependent voltage. The extracted parameters used on the equivalent circuit of the optoelectronic pH sensor is simulated on SPICE. The percent error between the responses on experimental and simulation of the test pads 1, 2, 3 and 4 are 10.28%, 0.01%, 0.34% and 0.86% respectively. Based on these results, an optoelectronic pH sensor model is developed.","PeriodicalId":122465,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Region 10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"1951 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129302441","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The piezoceramic materials are placed at different locations of the wing section to harvest the possible maximum voltage output. The design of the airfoil is chosen as to replicate the existing military type UAVs today. The experiments were carried out on a UAV prototype with a wing span of 0.54m at 20m/s using two different sized piezoceramic materials. The experiments were conducted in a wind tunnel for simulating the flight conditions in a more realistic manner. To further improve the performance of the energy harvesting system throughout the experiments, some modifications were made where the magnet strips are located at the top and bottom of the wing section. The magnet strips were found to excite further vibrations to produce a larger average voltage output, e.g. 613mV. The real time experiments have shown the potential and efficiency of using such energy harvesting methods in UAVs to provide local energy sources for wireless sensors. However, increasing the flight endurance of the prototype based on this implementation has not been proven to be feasible due to the inconsistency in the vibrations on the wings and the trade-offs of additional weights of the piezoceramics on the prototype.","PeriodicalId":122465,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Region 10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"64 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129509849","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With this step towards advancement, Mapua Institute of Technology would be providing a digital broadcast laboratory for its students to be ready with up-to-date technology. Part of the set-up is a realtime in-campus digital TV broadcast facility which can be used for information dissemination for the school community. The broadcast facility operates at 479 MHz, ISDB-T standard, 6 MHz BW, 13 segment 64 QAM with 1 W transmitting power. Optimum location for the four transmitting antenna in Mapua Intramuros Campus were identified by conducting indoor test measurements using signal level meter, signal level checker and one-segment mobile receiver. Three trial locations for the four proposed antenna positions were evaluated with a total of 2200 signal measurements. Field strength, delay profile, spectrum and constellations were measured and analyzed. Theoretical computations for field strength are compared to actual test results. A MATLAB program for contour mapping is provided for visual representations of signal spread. As expected, the study were able to prove the presence of interference, multipath and other factors like concrete and metal structures as well as human beings affecting the transmission and reach of each wall mounted antenna in a designated area. It is recommended to deploy additional Skywallie antenna for campus wide coverage. Although, educational license allowed us to operate at 479 MHz with 1 W power, increasing transmitter power will improve signal coverage. In addition, increasing the number of test points will produce more accurate measurements.","PeriodicalId":122465,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Region 10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"80 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132507877","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Philippines is a good candidate for algal-based biodiesel production since it has abundant resources and tropical climate that can support its production. However, due to the archipelagic nature of the Philippines, the location of production site and target market should be considered carefully since it will have direct impact to the final cost of the biodiesel product and its carbon footprint due to transportation. Land and sea transportation routes are available to deliver the product to its consumers. This paper focus on the distribution system from production site to city local oil depot's scattered throughout the Philippines. A simple fictional case study is presented where distances used are in the same scale as the transportation routes possible in the Philippines. Carbon dioxide (CO2) emission and cost are the main criteria in judging the viability of the pathways from production sites to oil depots. Multi-criteria desirability function by Derringer and Suich is used to determine the aggregate desirability from the two criteria. Priority factors in the desirability function were varied in two case studies where cost is prioritized over emissions and vise versa. The model has demonstrated good sensitivity to the change of desirability factors. Land transportation is favored for cost effectiveness while sea transportation is favored in terms of CO2 emissions. The results of the study could be further improved by using actual data and obtaining priority factors from AHP or ANP to capture the priorities of the stake holders.","PeriodicalId":122465,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Region 10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123574539","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
