We showed that dissociated rat hippocampal neurons on a multielectrode array dish formed heterogeneous networks of functional connections. We estimated the functional connections of all combinations of pairs of neurons on the electrodes and represented them into a \"connection map\". The connection map revealed that each culture contained some hub-like neurons with many functional connections. This cultured neuronal network has unique functional structures which are suitable for perform information processing and the network can re-organize functional connections between neurons in the network. So, it seems that the system can perform some intelligent behavior. We are developing the living brain robot system with premised rules which are corresponding to genetically provided interface of neural network to peripheral system. The premised rules are described by fuzzy logic and they play a role to generate instinctive behavior. The robot can avoid collision by sensor inputs from robot body to neuronal networks, and by output command from the network to motors of the robot. Now we are analyzing the change of connection map moderated by the interaction to outer world via moving robot","PeriodicalId":121329,"journal":{"name":"2006 IEEE International Symposium on MicroNanoMechanical and Human Science","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130240528","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, it is difficult to reconstruct neuronal circuits damaged by brain diseases. Neuronal cell transplantation into damaged brain regions had been believed to be promising, grafted neurons can extend their neuronal processes less than 500 micron and few functioning connections between grafted neurons and host neurons could be achieved by using the current neuronal cell grafting techniques. To enhance innervation of grafted neurons in damaged brains, we use very strong magnetic field and nanowires-coated with neuronal cell adhesion molecules. Nanowires injected in the rat brain were observed not only at the site of injection but also near the site of the magnet. Interestingly, nanowires lined up from the injected site towards the magnet. Its mutant protein 3L-Pf3, having three additional Leu residues in its transmembrane region, was demonstrated to be spontaneously inserted into large unilamellar vesicle (LUV), even in the absence of protein machineries or membrane potential. However, influences of the presence or absence of charged amino acids in the peptide on the manner of its insertion into LUV are still uncertain. In the present study, we designed new Pf3 mutants having His or Myc tags. These mutants were expressed in bacteria and added to the preformed LUV. Spontaneous insertion of these peptides into LUV was successfully observed","PeriodicalId":121329,"journal":{"name":"2006 IEEE International Symposium on MicroNanoMechanical and Human Science","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134064980","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With regard to manufacturing, they provide structural and material diversity: microplasmas ignited between thin film metal patterns permit localized etching and deposition, whereas micro-arcs permit stainless steel and other bulk metals. Micro-electrodischarge machining has been used for the lithography-compatible fabrication of \"smart stents\" that are integrated with pressure sensors. It has also been used to embed sensors at the tip of biopsy needles. With regard to sensing modalities, spectroscopic detection of chemicals in both gas and liquid phase has been explored. For example, discharge spectroscopy has been used to detect inorganic contaminants such as lead and chrome in water. The converse application has also been reported: salts dissolved in aqueous sample are used to tune the emission spectrum, which is subsequently filtered and used as an inexpensive UV source for the fluorescent detection of biochemicals. Gas-phase discharges are used for radiation sensing by Geiger counters and related micromachined devices. It has been shown that the RF emissions associated with these discharges are in the UWB spectrum, and can be detected by common AM/FM radios, creating some interesting opportunities for wireless networking","PeriodicalId":121329,"journal":{"name":"2006 IEEE International Symposium on MicroNanoMechanical and Human Science","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133433529","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, use of tissue specific promoters is limited by their inherent properties to drive gene expression in a restricted temporal-spatial expression pattern. It is desirable to develop techniques for regulating gene expression in a controllable way both temporally and spatially at single cell resolution. Once such techniques have been established in model organisms, they would serve as a basis for developing techniques to manipulate cellular behavior in other organisms including human. In this paper, we will first summarize previous attempts to drive gene expression at a desired time and space by using inducible promoters, in particular heat shock promoters. Then, we examine problems encountered in the previous attempts, and report our new approach to circumvent them","PeriodicalId":121329,"journal":{"name":"2006 IEEE International Symposium on MicroNanoMechanical and Human Science","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116152571","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In many applications, the capability of millirobots depends on mobility, multiplicity, and intelligence. For intelligence, sensing and computation capabilities are now almost available off the shelf. However, there are significant challenges for millirobots in creating all-terrain capable mobility, and low production costs for multiplicity. The mesoscopic range between MEMS and conventional robots provides a new domain with rich challenges. There are advantages to this size scale for novel low-cost fabrication methods, including rapid prototyping of millirobots from kits of parts. Efforts to apply the embossing roll processing method to the fabrication of micro components have drawn attention recently. This paper details our study to produce a micro patterned embossing roll with a 3D X-ray lithography process. More specifically, the outer surface of a cylindrical steel roll (12 mm in diameter) was coated with photo resist, and 3D X-ray lithography with synchrotron radiation was employed to fabricate a hole-shaped pattern (approx. 10 mum in diameter) on the outer surface. The outer surface of the roll was then plated with copper to fabricate copper dots (each approx. 10 mum in diameter), which were used as etching masks to perform wet etching on the roll. Consequently, we were able to fabricate a structure whose outer surface is dotted with numerous microstructures. However, edge of the pattern part that was masked by copper was underetched, and the expected shape was not able to obtain. Then, we examined the possibility of the processing by the verification of the problem of a wet etching, and the dry etching","PeriodicalId":121329,"journal":{"name":"2006 IEEE International Symposium on MicroNanoMechanical and Human Science","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117012976","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
