The effects of various experimental parameters such as adsorbent dosage, contact time, pH, concentration and temperature were investigated. The extent of ultramarine re- moval increased with increase in adsorbent dosage, contact time, concentration and temperature. The data obtained fitted to the Langmuir isotherm. The Sf value, which is the separation parameter was obtained as 0.633, indicating that the biomass is an excellent adsorbent for ultramarine blue. The Freundlich Model estimated the adsorption intensity (R2) as 0.993. The R2 value and the Line- ar plot obtained showed that the Freundlich isotherms favours the adsorption process. Pseudo-first and pseudo-second order kinetics were used to analyse experimental data and it was found that both models described the data very well. Thermodynamic parameters like free energy (ΔG), en- thalpy (ΔH) and entropy (ΔS) of the system were calculated by Langmuir constant (k) and it was found that the adsorption process was endothermic in nature.","PeriodicalId":119603,"journal":{"name":"Nigerian Journal of Science and Environment","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131605818","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Ten (10) water samples were collected from hand-dug wells for geochemical analysis. The geochemi- cal parameters showed average values of 6.20 pH; 156.0μs/cm EC; 7.60mg/l TH; 4.50mg/l, Ca2+; 4.20mg/l Mg2+; 0.95mg/I K+; 1.00mg/l Na+; 0.87mg/l ∑Fe; 0.03mg/I Cu2+; 0.04mg/I Cr2+ ; 28.68mg/l Cl- ; 5.40mg/I HCO3-; 2.41mg/l NO3-; 0.80mg/l SO42- and average sodium absorption ratio (SAR) of 1.36. The relative abundance of cations using these concentrations is in the order of Ca2+> Mg2+ > Na+> K+ > ∑Fe > Cr2+ > Cu2+ while those of anions are in the order Cl- > HCO3- > NO3- >SO42+. Fifteen (15) vertical electrical soundings were carried out in the study area using Schumberger electrode configuration. The result of the interpretation of the VES curves showed that the area is made up of four and five geoelectric layer. The third and fourth layer made up of medium, coarse and gravelly sand constitutes the aquifer unit(s), the average depth to the aquifer is 35.2m. The concentration of the various parameters determined in the groundwater were relatively in accordance with WHO recommended standard for domestic and agricultural purposes except pH and ∑Fe in Okirighwre , Ajogodo and Ogorode. Granules of metronidazole (test drug) were prepared by wet granulation technique using Brachystegia eurycoma or acacia gum at concentrations of 2.5, 5.0, 7.5 or 10%w/w. The resulting granules were evaluated for packing and flow properties. Granules were compressed into tablets with and without a centre hole (as in- built defect) using a compression load of 2.0 arbitrary unit on the load scale. The tablets were evaluated for tensile strength and the data was used to calculate the brittle fracture index (BFI). The compressibility index which is a measure of ease of compaction of the granules upon tapping was < 23.5% while all granules were free flowing with angle of repose <36.90. Increase in binder concentration led to an increase in Pf and T values irrespective of the type of the gum binder used in the formulations. Generally, increasing the binder concentration at a given compression load resulted in a decrease in the brittle fracture tendency of the tablets. For instance, at a binder concentrations of 2.5% w/w the BFI for Brachystegia eurycoma and acacia gum were 0.13 and 0.10 respectively while their corresponding values at binder concentration of 7.5% w/w were 0.06 and 0.08. The study has shown that Brachystegia eurycoma gum is an effective binder that produces harder tablets with low brittle fracture tendency.","PeriodicalId":119603,"journal":{"name":"Nigerian Journal of Science and Environment","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129307958","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study therefore investigates the thermal effect of gas flaring on the Ebedei community of Delta State, Nigeria. Measurements of temperature variation with distance from four different directions from the flare point were obtained for 15 days each for both the wet and dry season. Result shows that the average temperature of the area under investigation ranged from 270C to 520C for the raining season and 380C to 570C for the dry season. Result when compared with daily average temperature obtained from satellite reading shows a temperature elevation which ranges from 2.20C to 24.20C for the wet season and 1.90C to 20.90C for the dry season. Results further indicate that the direct effect of the elevated temperature is eliminated after a distance of 2.15 km for the raining season and 2.06 km for the dry season. It is recommended that agricultural crops which respond negatively to high temperature variation should not be planted in this area. The oil company in Ebedei is encouraged to expedite the completion of the gas plant under construction and put it into use to reduce drastically the gas flared in the area. The government is also called upon to pass a legislation to end gas flaring in Nigeria within the shortest possible time.","PeriodicalId":119603,"journal":{"name":"Nigerian Journal of Science and Environment","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126953598","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
