Using servo presses as an example, the application of two different energy storage systems in the DC link is practically examined. A simulation model in Matlab/Simulink and a test stand of a servo press are proposed for representing the power flows between the mains supply, the electric drives and the storage systems. Standard and emerging topologies for high-efficiency (>98%) PV inverters are identified and optimized for the capital cost of power filter components and power devices. Analytical formulae are developed for minimum filter inductance considering both current ripple and core-loss constraints. For string-type PV inverters, SiC power devices are shown to be cost competitive compared with Si power devices. Three example PV inverter designs are presented to showcase the use of SiC power devices. In order to meet the industry demands, the power system is required to be of high power density. This article proposes one of the solution to improve the power density for the medium power applications. In phase shifted full bridge converter, the intrinsic leakage inductance of the main transformer is not high enough to obtain the zero voltage switching of the power switches for the entire operating conditions. An additional shim inductor is usually connected in series with the primary winding of the main transformer to increase the collective leakage inductance. This additional shim inductor degrades the power density of the converter. This paper proposes a method to embed and control the resonance inductance inside the main transformer. In addition to the increased inter-winding spacing, this paper proposes a practical approach to integrate the ferrite rods inside the main transformer for further increase in the leakage inductance. A power transformer is constructed and investigated by using the modelled equations to estimate the leakage inductance. A prototype phase shifted full bridge converter is also developed to investigate the performance of the proposed transformer. The converter is designed for the switching frequency of 400kHz, and tested up to 600watts output power at the input voltage of 200Vdc. The performance of the proposed converter is also compared with the converter of using an external inductor. First the diodes are specifically developed and characterized. Afterwards the diodes are tested in an advanced non-isolated buck converter for LED modules. This causes problems with the voltage stability in the capacitor submodules for a static synchronous compensator (STATCOM), when implemented using the modular multilevel converter (M2C) concept. In order to counteract the uncontrollability of the capacitor voltage, a common practice is to circulate a zero-sequence fundamental current or a direct current. The method brings the benefit of re-balancing the active power among the individual phases while it requires over-rating of the valve current or dc voltage of the STATCOM. This would in practice give a more expensive design. This paper presents a benchmark of various M2C-based STATCOM designs considering the valve overrating. The STATCOM topologies will be benchmarked with the EAF modeled for all possible combinations of positive- and negative-sequence current. The purpose is to rate the performance of the active damping approaches. After a short introduction of the stabilisation strategies the experimental setup is described. This paper proposes a novel control method to improve the current balance in order to protect the device against over current destruction. The method uses two control loops to confine the current rising speed as well as to reconcile the current change start time difference. Without current measurement or any manual operation, the implementation is thus simple and convenient. Details about the strategy and its superiority are discussed.
