One of the disadvantages is that it is typically an “off-line” process. This paper investigates an alternative method of looking at impedance spectroscopy of a battery system while it is on-line and operational by manipulating the switching pattern of the dc-dc converter to generate low frequency harmonics in conjunction with the normal high frequency switching pattern to determine impedance in real time. However, this adds extra ripple on the inductor which needs to be included in the design calculations. The paper describes the methodology and presents some experimental results in conjunction with EIS results to illustrate the concept.","PeriodicalId":119358,"journal":{"name":"2016 18th European Conference on Power Electronics and Applications (EPE'16 ECCE Europe)","volume":"34 3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130563968","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is proposed to remove the existing junction box and replace the by-pass diodes with individual DC-DC converters connected to a single-phase inverter. Particular attention is given to systems operating under long-term non-uniform conditions, such as snow or dust accumulation. A comparison with a classical two-stage interleaved-flyback microinverter is provided to analyze the performance and to quantify the improvements of the proposed structure.","PeriodicalId":119358,"journal":{"name":"2016 18th European Conference on Power Electronics and Applications (EPE'16 ECCE Europe)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133323518","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It studies the effect of adding a battery energy storage on a microgrid efficiency. A new designed Finnish-townhouse building is applied to model the power flow and converter types. Losses related to wirings, converters and discharging of the energy storage are calculated in a minute resolution to enhance the accuracy of the results. Ultimately, efficiency is derived for a range of converters' switching frequencies from 4 to 15 kHz while considering the microgrid possible voltage fluctuations in both AC and DC systems. Results represent higher efficiency in the DC microgrid in both cases with and without the existence of the storage. Furthermore, less discrepancy is obtained in the DC microgrid efficiency when the storage is added comparing to the AC microgrid. Accordingly, switching to DC distribution inside the building concerning the fast developments in power conversion devices seems promising in increasing the efficiency of the power systems.","PeriodicalId":119358,"journal":{"name":"2016 18th European Conference on Power Electronics and Applications (EPE'16 ECCE Europe)","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131126388","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Optimum management usually depends on many factors and assumptions, for example what should be optimized (self-consumption of local renewable resources, consumer cost, peak reduction), prediction of local generation and load patterns, and the assumptions concerning the operation of the ESS itself. This paper aims to quantify one of the usual assumptions made (especially by non-electrical engineers) i.e. that the assumption that the power converter in the ESS is 100% efficient does not lead to substantial errors in the ESS performance and cost-benefit analysis. Three different ESS power converter models have been created and their behaviour as part of a house based ESS management system over a one year period has been analysed using five different control approaches, a variety of battery and solar panel sizes and employing a time of use tariff (Economy 7). By observing the ESS charging pattern through the year and monitoring of the annual electricity cost along with the system's losses for the household, relationships between the battery and PV size, the control algorithms, the electricity cost and the system losses were created.","PeriodicalId":119358,"journal":{"name":"2016 18th European Conference on Power Electronics and Applications (EPE'16 ECCE Europe)","volume":"423 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115929595","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Modular structure comprised of standard dual three-phase voltage source inverter (VSI) along with one additional bi-directional semi-conductor device (MOSFET/IGBT) per phase and two capacitors with neutral point. The additional switches and capacitors are introduced to generate the additional voltage levels in outputs of the VSI. An original modified single carrier five-level modulation (MSCFM) algorithm is developed in this work and overcomes the complexity of standard space vector modulations, easy for real implementation purposes in digital processors. Proposed six-phase multilevel inverter configuration generates multilevel outputs with benefit in comprises with standard multilevel inverter topologies. Further, the complete numerical model of the proposed AC converter along with pulse-width modulation (PWM) is developed with Matlab/PLECS simulation software's.
