We develop a short-term univariate forecasting model for Swiss electricity trade. Next, we analyse the determinants of Switzerlandpsilas bilateral electricity trade using a multivariate approach. We take into account the information contained in relative prices and terms of trade. The in-sample predictive ability of the multivariate models are shown to be better than those of the naive and univariate models. In view of the forthcoming electricity market liberalisations, the information contained in the price variables along with the evidence on the substitution effects in imports and exports by source and destination countries can be valuable in understanding and predicting the future developments in the Swiss electricity trade.","PeriodicalId":118618,"journal":{"name":"2008 5th International Conference on the European Electricity Market","volume":"72 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-05-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133988074","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The key idea is to maximize the energy gained through orientation, and to minimize the energy consumption for tracking of the Sun path. The optimization is made by reducing the angular revolution field of the panel, and consequently the operating time of the motor, without significantly affecting the incident radiation. In fact, we are looking for the optimal angular field in which the panel absorbs as much as possible solar radiation with minimum energy consumption. The application is made for a polar tracking system, by using a virtual prototyping platform that contains specific software solutions, in the concurrent engineering concept, as follows: CATIA - for developing the geometric model of the tracking mechanism, ADAMS/View - for analyzing & optimizing the tracking system, and MATLAB/Simulink & ADAMS/Controls - for developing the control system.","PeriodicalId":118618,"journal":{"name":"2008 5th International Conference on the European Electricity Market","volume":"301 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-05-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132874075","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed method is applied to a hydrothermal system comprising 29 thermal units and 13 hydroplants, including 2 pumped storage plants, similar to the Greek Power System. The generation scheduling model is based on an hourly load curve. Perfect competition assumption is adopted and all thermal generators are assumed to bid their marginal cost. A large mixed-integer programming problem is formulated and implemented in GAMS. Binary variables represent thermal unit hourly commitment status. Results on an hourly basis, including thermal unit commitment and dispatch, hydroplant generation and pumping and system marginal price are presented.","PeriodicalId":118618,"journal":{"name":"2008 5th International Conference on the European Electricity Market","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-05-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131095734","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

SIMCMTP provides users with a set of alternative methods for cost allocation and enables the definition of specific rules, according to each market and/or situation needs. With these characteristics, SIMCMTP can be used as an operation aid for Transmission System Operator (TSO) or Independent System Operator (ISO). Due to its openness, it can also be used as a decision-making support tool for evaluating different options of market rules in competitive market environment, guarantying the economic sustainability of the transmission system.","PeriodicalId":118618,"journal":{"name":"2008 5th International Conference on the European Electricity Market","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-05-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133424530","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Human subjects compete on a market to maximize their profit while they are located in two different geographical areas with limited interconnector capacity. The eight experiments we run lead to a better understanding of how market power is exercised by the duopoly or the triopoly, how it can influence an adjacent competitive market and a characterisation of subjectspsila behaviour. We find out that subjectspsila behaviours can be classified into three main classes: leaders, who take risk to raise prices, followers who bid according to their expectation of leaderspsila decision, and price takers who bid their marginal price whatever the market conditions. The presence of one leader and several followers is usually sufficient to observe significant use of market power.","PeriodicalId":118618,"journal":{"name":"2008 5th International Conference on the European Electricity Market","volume":"145 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-05-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114513319","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study implies the best location of GSUs to supply all demands and the optimal allocation from sources to gas loads, through an appropriate transportation mode, in order to minimize total system costs. Our emphasis is on the formulation and use of a suitable optimization model, reflecting real-world operations and the constraints of natural gas systems. The mathematical model is based on a Lagrangean heuristic, using the Lagrangean relaxation, an efficient approach to solve the problem. Computational results are presented for Iberian and American natural gas systems, geographically organized in 65 and 88 load nodes, respectively. The location model results, supported by the computational application GasView, show the optimal location and allocation solution, system total costs and suggest a suitable gas transportation mode, presented in both numerical and graphic supports.","PeriodicalId":118618,"journal":{"name":"2008 5th International Conference on the European Electricity Market","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-05-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128514918","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

That is, respecting all security and environmental criteria, there should be no lower cost way to cover the hourly demand. The Spanish bidding design for the spot market, responsible for the final generation program, is found inadequate to reach such goal, and to imply higher fuel consumption, cost and emissions, plus also certain risks for generation companies. Some inadequacies are identified, and an alternative bidding design is proposed, estimated to better achieve the mentioned objective. Using real and estimated data from the Spanish electric system, alternative generation programs were calculated for four representative weeks, and compared to the ones actually scheduled by the market, showing that savings of about 5.2% in cost of thermal generation and 3.9% in emissions are possible in the Spanish electric system.","PeriodicalId":118618,"journal":{"name":"2008 5th International Conference on the European Electricity Market","volume":"88 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-05-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133755831","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The computational model consists of repeated day-ahead market sessions and a two-zone transmission network. Different inelastic load serving entities configurations are considered for studying how producers learn to strategically decommit their units and how they exercise market power by profiting from transmission network constraints. Learning producers are modeled by different multi-agent learning algorithms, such as the Q-Learning, the EWA learning and the GIGA-WoLF. Computational results point out that all learning models considered are able to learn to appropriately decommit their units and to sustain the exertion of zonal market power.","PeriodicalId":118618,"journal":{"name":"2008 5th International Conference on the European Electricity Market","volume":"104 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-05-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133077852","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We apply a computable partial equilibrium model and study the impact of the German policy under market power on the producer and consumer price and compare the results with those we get under the assumption of price taking behavior. Furthermore, in order to check the sensitivity we change the elasticity of demand. Two major findings can be reported. Firstly, the feed-in tariff increases the consumer price and decreases the price on the producer market, irrespective of the assumed elasticity and competition scenario. Secondly, we find that market power shifts the burden of support for renewable energy from producers to consumers when compared with price taking behavior of all actors.","PeriodicalId":118618,"journal":{"name":"2008 5th International Conference on the European Electricity Market","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-05-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130556521","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
