In this paper, we investigate the medium access control (MAC) protocol for CR networks and propose a cognitive MAC using slotted Aloha to enable CR users to access spectrum holes in a licensed frequency band. In order to avoid the high computational complexities of traditional Markovian analysis, we investigate the tagged user analysis (TUA) based on queuing theories in CR scenarios and use TUA to analyze the proposed cognitive MAC performance. The theoretical derivations based on TUA are presented and computer simulations are performed to evaluate the CR network performance as well as TUA accuracy. The network throughput, packet blocking probability, queue length, packet waiting time and response time are evaluated.","PeriodicalId":118220,"journal":{"name":"2012 21st Annual Wireless and Optical Communications Conference (WOCC)","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131477427","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we showed that traffic load has significant influence on energy consumption of network nodes and then we made a relation between traffic and interference using collision numbers. Then, we presented a distributed algorithm on topology control to address this challenge by considering collision numbers as a main factor in selection of links. This algorithm tries to improve initial topology to reduce collision numbers. Simulation results verified superiority of the proposed approach over a number of reported techniques in literature.","PeriodicalId":118220,"journal":{"name":"2012 21st Annual Wireless and Optical Communications Conference (WOCC)","volume":"335 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133500479","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methane gas detection is very important for outburst prediction. In order to protect people and to avoid destructive sequence, it is necessary to design a system that can predict methane outburst in coal mines. In order to improve the reliability of gas monitoring in coal mine, we design a wireless sensor network (WSN) with gas sensors. The wireless sensor network is suitable for toxic gas monitoring in the severe environment of underground coal mines. Semiconductor type methane sensor having low power consumption and high sensitivity is used in the proposed system. The chain type clustering of low power sensor nodes along with data aggregation is devised to optimize the power consumption by the WSN. Additional feature of minimum data transmission and state transitions between listening, sleeping and transmitting modes in sensor nodes also guarantee power optimization.","PeriodicalId":118220,"journal":{"name":"2012 21st Annual Wireless and Optical Communications Conference (WOCC)","volume":"165 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124614516","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper proposes a design framework for an optimal control strategy to efficiently perform surveillance over a wide disaster hit area using a network of flying robots to determine the extent of damage promptly. The main focus of the paper is to develop an adaptive and energy efficient routing strategy with less power dissipation and delay compared to traditional routing algorithms. This protocol efficiently determines the best route by taking account of the residual energy, signal strength and various environmental factors. Simulation results show that the proposed routing scheme achieves much higher performance than the classical routing protocols.","PeriodicalId":118220,"journal":{"name":"2012 21st Annual Wireless and Optical Communications Conference (WOCC)","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123993164","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
