We first determine the correct functional space of the continuous variables and then examine two possible representations in the VFEM. One choice is shown to provide superior solver convergence though its use results in sub-optimal error convergence. We then propose and validate a remedy to this problem by special treatment of non-planar interfaces. Such localisation systems are envisioned to be applicable to post-disaster search and rescue, wildlife tracking, traffic control, and identification of illegal broadcasters by law enforcement. A novel DOA architecture (Miura et al., 2006) was installed across the wings of a prototype stratospheric aircraft and flown in November 2006. Cylindrical electromagnetic band gap (CEBG) structures are radially and circularly periodic, and they present pass-band and stop-band to cylindrical electromagnetic waves. By applying a horn-shaped defect in these structures, it has been shown that a re-configurable directive pattern can be obtained. In (P. Ratasjack et al., 2004), experimental results for a reconfigurable CEBG-based antenna have been presented, whereas in (H. Boutayeb et al., 2006), an analysis of the transmission coefficient of CEBG structures and experimental results for a CEBG directive antenna have been proposed. In (H. Boutayeb et al., 2006), a new defect configuration has been proposed for reducing the power supply, but this solution leads to a narrower band. In this paper, new defect configurations are analyzed in order to reduce the number of active elements and the required power supply in CEBG-based agile antennas. To fulfill several requirements, various techniques for designing variable-beamwidth antennas have recently been proposed. In this work, the authors propose a new cylindrical electromagnetic band gap (CEBG) structure for modifying the radiation beamwidth. CEBG structures composed of metallic wires have been introduced in (H. Boutayeb, et al., 2006). These structures are radialy and circularly periodic and present pass-bands and stop-bands to TM cylindrical electromagnetic waves when they are excited in their center. By introducing a defect and modifying the number of the periodic surfaces, a directive radiation with variable beamwidth can be obtained. By studying the field distribution in the H-plane, significant size reduction and power supply were achieved. The proposed structure shows good performances in terms of beamwidth configurability with less power supply and less active elements. The proposed preconditioners provide simple mechanisms for eliminating \"resonant\" and \"DC\" eigenvalues from combined and electric field TDIEs, thereby rendering them immune from late-time ringing and non-oscillatory growth of their solutions. A gradient in the refractive index of the metamaterial is introduced by continuous tuning of a single parameter in the metamaterial elements.
