The idioms, presented in the analyzed text fragments, which contain an ethnonational component in their structure, directly refl ect the worldview and thinking of Ukrainians. Ivan Ohiienko, researching the history of the formation of the Ukrainian state, very aptly emphasized the features of Ukrainians as bearers of national culture, which contained connections with vari-ous spheres – thinking, worldview, worldview, world understanding, speech, cultural interpretation etc. These deep structures of human intellectual activity in their interre-lationships created a unique code of national culture of Ukrainians who defended and continue to defend Ukrainian independence all their lives. In the historical epic of the epic, Ivan Ohiienko not by chance uses lexemes to denote objects of spiritual national culture, covering the national, religious, partly mythological and territorial-geographic sphere. One of the central markers in the work is the lexeme Ukraine, which, accord-ing to the author’s beliefs, is a personifi ed component of the ethno-cultural space of Ukrainians. The evaluative meanings used to characterize the indicated lexeme are mostly negative (burns, cries, dies, burns, trembles, freezes). The description of the basic ethnocultural phytonyms (willow, viburnum, poplar, oak) used in the work tes-tify to the mythopoetic worldview of Ukrainians. A number of used toponyms (for example, Kyiv, Lubenshchyna, Volyn, Novgorod, Berestechko, Lviv, Rohatyn etc.) are representatives of the geographical location in the work. The inseparable connection with the Motherland is presented through the description of symbols – objects of a certain territory – hydronyms (Dnipro, Dniester, Black Sea, etc.). Kaplychna","doi":"10.32626/2309-7086.2022-19.100-113","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.32626/2309-7086.2022-19.100-113","url":null,"abstract":"The article characterizes Oleksa Hai-Holovko’s memoir novel Duel with the Devil through the prism of the tragic category. The tragic events described in the novel are presented in a retrospective perspective, based on the author’s personal experience against the background of social events of the fi rst one-third of the twentieth century (collectivization, the famine of 1933, mass repressions of the thirties). The writer de-scribes the events taking place in the USSR (Volume 1) and in post-war Germany (Volume 2), where the narrator lives at diff erent periods of his life. In the novel, the category of tragic is characterized in the indirect, direct and existential format.The plot, composition, problematic and thematic features of the work are characterized. The milestones of Hai-Holovko’s formation as a personality are described, and the researcher focuses on the formation of his national, patri-otic, and civic character against the backdrop of tragic reality. The chronological sequence of the author’s narrative illustrates a panoramic picture of his tragic existence, which at the same time refl ects the tragic fate of the Ukrainian na-tion. According to the literary critic, the writer models the category of the tragic in the novel in three ways: 1) the tragic pictures are depicted indirectly in the novelist’s references to the emergence of Soviet power in Ukraine, the outrages of the Red Army, the shooting of neighbours, and third-party testimonies about the persecution and extermination of Ukrainians in foreign lands who did not öèñòàwant to return to the USSR after World War II; 2) the direct tragic determines the vicissitudes on the path to personal freedom in Ukraine and abroad. Plot moves constantly keep the reader in dynamic tension as a sign of the narrator’s (author’s) tragedy – the fear of falling into the hands of persecutors even when he lived in the American zone of Germany; 3) the tragedy of the individual at the level of existence, when the narrator illuminates inner feelings through the prism of adventure «fi lms» about the NKVDists’ «hunt» for non-returnees, the arrest of the main character, and his escape from arrest. The research is based on the principles of historicism, objectivity, systematicity and comprehensiveness, as well as on the use of methods – analysis and synthesis, historical-comparative, historical-typological. It consists in the fact that for the fi rst time in domestic his-toriography an attempt was made to comprehensively analyze the role and place of the fl eet in the development of the logistics of the Egyptian Empire. In the period of the New Kingdom, due to the needs of logistics, old and new types of ships designed for use in the open sea were modernized. New ships could freely transport manpower and necessary cargo. As a result of the conquering cam-paigns of the pharaohs of the 18th ‒ 19th dynasties, a powerful logistics network was established, in which the fl eet played an important role. Among other aspects, researchers have focused on the archetypal nature of his prose. However, in this vector of studies of the author’s poetics, the interest in «psychological» archetypes still prevails – the Self, the Shadow, the Anima, the Animus, etc. Meanwhile, the writer’s active appeal to the fundamental im-ages of nature, the so-called archetypes of «primordial elements» is obvious. The study of their functional role in the authpor’s fi ctional system can lead to the solution in fundamental problems of Yurii Klen’s poetics.The peculiarities of the fi ctional world of the novel «Acacia» are largely deter-mined by the individual authorial embodiment of the archetypes of the primordial material elements, primarily Fire and Water. The author explains their dominant functions in accordance with the «mystical» plot of the novella and the intricate visionary and oneiric imagination of the main character. In the work, the arche-type of fi re is endowed with destructive and deadly power, while water embodies life-giving symbolism. Words and expressions related to the semantics of burning create an extremely wide fi eld in the text. This is «Fire» itself, and its equivalents, synonyms and derivatives. The motifs of heat, fl ame, fuel and the metaphors of burning, shining, explosion mediated by them become the variant-content realiza-tion of the archetype of the Fire. They echo in various plot situations and discursive representations, which receive an appropriate linguistic and stylistic design. The destructive element of the Fire in the text of the novella is opposed by various manifestations of the Water, which carries life-giving symbolism. The mediated collision of the Fire and the Water in the novella implies the idea of the eternal op-position of these two forces and a certain balancing sense of their interdependence. In the article the peculiarities of use and spatial distribution of phraseo-logical units with the component snow based on the materials of modern dictionar-ies of dialect speech are studied. It is determined that the characteristics of human features and actions, abstract concepts are the object of phraseologisation through fi gurative reinterpretation of the names of natural phenomena. Phraseological units with dialectal components encode the general ideas of a person, the abil-ity to characterize or evaluate something. In certain territories, the specifi city of metaphorical transfers, accents on diff erent scales of manifestation of the sign have been recorded. Lexicographic works on dialect language make it possible to study the local-dialectal features of phraseological units and their components. Fixed expressions with the component snow are distinguished by fi gurativeness and emotionality, testify to cognitive processes that connect the meaning of a free word combination with a phraseological one, make it possible to determine as-sociative, ethnolinguistic, and cultural foundations. The nomination of the natural phenomenon snow with other components forms a single integrity in phraseologi-cal units, which, when reinterpreted, creates a visual and sensory representation of a person (appearance, mental abilities, character features, peculiarities of behavior and actions. The linguistic expression of dialect speakers’ perception of the dialect model of the cyclical time model, of the natural order, designation of the concepts ‘never’, ‘very long’, ‘a long time’, etc. is also recorded. The purpose of the article is a generalized ideological and theoretical analysis of the methodology of studying Ukrainian literature in a cultural key. According to the NUS Concept, one of the ten key competencies is awareness and self-expression in the fi eld of culture. This competence is related to the understanding of works of art, the formation of one’s own artistic tastes, the independent expression of ideas, experiences and feelings through works of art. The formation of cultural competence within school programs does not have a special targeted subject, but takes place in the synergy of infl uences on the student’s personality during the study of a number of related disciplines. Perhaps the greatest potential to form cultural competence have the disciplines of the lin-guistic and literary cycle, in particular Ukrainian literature. Lessons of Ukrainian literature, in which the cultural context is systematically involved, are able to form a full-fl edged understanding of the pupils about the cultural paradigm in the conditions of which national literature arose and developed, as well as to give pupils a holistic understanding of the place of the artistic word among other types of art. The key note of the authors of the NUS Concept is that awareness and self-expression in the fi eld of culture is based on a deep understanding of one’s own national identity. All this motivates the correctness of the complex scientifi c vec-tor of the current research, the source of which is the non-linguistic works of Ivan Ohiienko (with an emphasis on the book “Ukrainian culture. A brief history of the cultural life of the Ukrainian people”). First, the appropriateness of studying literature in the national and cultural plane is substantiated. Secondly, it was in-vestigated how Ivan Ohiienko appeals to the worldview dominants of vitalism as a thought code of the indestructibility of the Ukrainian nation in the constructed algorithm of presenting the material. Evidence of the vitality of the Ukrainian nation is precisely the unique culture, in particular literature. The formation of cultural competence by the Ohiienko’s traditions is highlighted in the article. It contributes to building a solid foundation for the national self-identifi cation of schoolchildren. {"title":"THE UKRAINIAN PRESS ON THE ACTIVITIES OF THE MINISTRY OF RELIGION OF THE UNR UNDER IVAN OHIIENKO (september 1919 – july 1920)","authors":"О. Marchuk","doi":"10.32626/2309-7086.2022-19.215-231","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.32626/2309-7086.2022-19.215-231","url":null,"abstract":"Unsolved issues in the historical past related to the creation of the national Orthodox Church are being seen nowadays, when the Ukrainian state is doing everything possible, in particular, for the military defeat of the occupiers, pro-tection of its sovereignty, territorial integrity and needs a broad consolidation of the society, including those groups of believers belonging to the Moscow Patriarchate. One of the creators of autocephaly, UNR’s Minister of Religion, Ivan Ohiienko, was well awared of the harmful infl uence of the dependence of the Ukrainian church on the Russian one and the corresponding deformations in the worldview of believers. In his activities, aimed at the formation and organi-zational completion of Ukrainian Orthodoxy in 1919-1920, there are a number of lessons for today, which the proposed study also contains. To analyze the materials of Ukrainian periodicals about the activities of the Ministry of Religion headed by Ivan Ohiienko in 1919-1920, when the Ukrainian state pursued the most active ecclesiastical policy regarding the creation of its patriotic Orthodox Church. The article adheres to generally accepted research principles of objec-tivity, comprehensiveness, historicism, and others. The author used methods of analysis, induction and deduction, descriptiveness, content analysis, historical-comparative, source criticism, historical-systemic, etc. For the fi rst time in his-toriography, an attempt is made to provide a comprehensive source analysis of Ukrainian periodicals that covered the activities of the Ministry of Religion and its head, Ivan Ohiienko, from September 1919 (appointment to the position) to July 1920 (departure from Kamianets-Podilskyi). More than a hundred news-paper reports and materials present the multifaceted activities of the Ministry of Religion, had been headed by Ivan Ohiienko. These reports and materials were related to almost all aspects of the work of the Ministry, starting from plans and ending with orders. Their analysis testifi es to the eff orts of the minis-ter’s team to consistently implement the church policy of the UNR government (Ukrainization, reform of church administration and spiritual education, devel-opment of autocephaly, etc.). On their basis, two periods of the most active work of the ministry can be distinguished – in September-October 1919 and May-June 1920, which are associated with the deterioration/improvement of the national and military situation in the country. He was famous as a writer, a lit-erary and memoirs scholar, a historian and a journalist. His merit is in the research-es in the fi eld of cultural, theological, historical-publicistic and literature studies. Kostiuk being a literature historian, a literature critic, a person of encyclopedic knowledge became a prominent fi gure in cultural life of Ukraine and the Ukrainian Diaspora of the XXth century. In the time allotted by his fate he become a world-known personality, a giant of the spirit, University man. Kostiuk’s personality at-tract with his only human features as follows: tolerance, kindness and steadfast ad-herence to principle together regarding cultural and social items. Impulsive, prone to controversy, however he has romantic, mild, touching, sensitive, to the point of sentimentality, temper. He profoundly got interested in the history of Ukrainians, their problems, journalistic researches. His historical and literature, critical and historical-publicistic studies are primarily based on the cultural concept implying a free development if the Ukrainian nation. Kostiuk’s style as a publicist is distin-guished with logic and synthesis of thought, consistency and simplicity of the facts presentation, brevity of conclusion and generalizations. Kostiuk’s contribution lies in his presenting of objective assessment of the Soviet society and the contempo-rary Ukrainian science at the same time. All his life Hrygoriy Kostiuk tried to keep to his own credo, working and increasing the national cultural treasury by editions of the forgotten writers and scientists whose works of art were deleted from the Ukrainian literature history. He took care of valuable documents preservation as historical facts regarding them to be a cultural heritage.
