This paper introduces a new simulation-technique based on the theory of wave digital filters (WDFs). WDFs are candidates to substitute classical analog filters by digital electronic circuits in signal processing. They show advantages compared with other classes of digital filters like fast algorithms and simple models of electric components. Therefore the theory of WDFs is used to build a new simulator for transient simulation. So far the properties of this simulator permit a fair comparison between the new simulation-technique and well-known simulation programs. The new simulator is easily linked to a CAD-program to design and optimize switch mode power supplies already in use in industry.","PeriodicalId":117576,"journal":{"name":"IAS '95. The magnetic force at each point of the air gap varies with the square of the flux density. Forces of magnetic attraction act simultaneously upon diametrically opposite points of the stator and tend to distort the machine and cause noise. Noise, caused by the positively and negatively travelling waves of the force, can excite the motor mechanics around the resonances and cause the largest displacement of the stator assembly and loudest noise of the motor. The rotor eccentricity can also effect the flux distribution in the air gap and cause an additional noise.","PeriodicalId":117576,"journal":{"name":"IAS '95. The basic structure of a fuzzy logic controller is outlined and the design problems associated with the conventional trial-and-error schemes are addressed. The suitability of the genetic algorithm optimization technique as a means to determine and optimize the fuzzy logic controller design is discussed. In the proposed approach normalization factors and/or membership function parameters and/or the controller policy, are translated into bit-strings. These bit-strings are processed by the genetic algorithm and if the selection process as well as the objective function are chosen properly, a near-optimal solution can be found. To examine the efficiency of the proposed approach, a self-tuning and self-organizing fuzzy logic controller for an indirect field oriented induction motor drive is designed in both a sequential and a concurrent manner. A particular objective function (i.e., a performance index) is chosen to achieve a high dynamic performance. The simulation results demonstrate a significant enhancement in shortening the development time, and improving system performance over a manually tuned fuzzy logic controller.","PeriodicalId":117576,"journal":{"name":"IAS '95. The harmonic voltages produce harmonic winding currents which in turn cause increased motor loss due to circulating currents in the stator winding and rotor. Typical induction motor tests use only the 60 Hz excitation provided by the power system and may not be completely adequate to predict loss when the motor is operated from an ASD or other harmonic-rich voltage source. This paper describes an additional test which measures the wideband impedance of a motor during normal operation. The resistive part of motor impedance is shown to increase for frequencies above 60 Hz and application of this test to calculating motor loss is described. Extensions of this test applications such as motor parameter estimation and online monitoring of motor temperature by the change of resistance technique are suggested.","PeriodicalId":117576,"journal":{"name":"IAS '95. At present, a single substrate inverter IC is limited to 75 A for its maximum current carrying capacity, and its applications are primarily in high voltage commercial area. Power utilization of devices for such applications are relatively high and have little influence on the system performance since the supply voltage is much higher in comparison with ON-state saturation voltage of power devices. Unlikely, for battery powered applications where supply voltage and power utilization are low, thus selections of proper power devices are essential to build a better inverter system since the degree of power utilization in inverter ICs determines the performance of the inverter system. Because of the resistance of substrate pattern also has a significant influence on the system performance, the authors increased the thickness of copper foil to twice of the current models. Despite increased thickness, the authors maintained the present fine pattern pitch by the adoption of a new etching process, and succeeded the development of a new high density assembly substrate. Being able to adopt low on-resistance power devices and thick pattern traces, as a result the unit became compact and performed as per design.","PeriodicalId":117576,"journal":{"name":"IAS '95. The integration is performed by using the column armature of the matrix of a capacitive tactile sensor as thermal resistor having positive temperature coefficient. A prototype of the sensor has been designed and constructed. From test results on this prototype when used as a tactile sensor, with spatial resolution of 2 mm, has been detected a sensitivity of about 20 N/mm/sup 2/ per picofarad or 0.05 pF per N/mm/sup 2/ with linearity of about 0.4%. This inverter can generate almost sinusoidal waveform voltage with only one time switching per cycle as the number of levels increases. It can solve the problems of conventional transformer-based multipulse inverters and the problems of the multilevel diode-clamped inverter and the multilevel living capacitor inverter. To demonstrate the superiority of the new inverter, a SVG system using the new inverter topology is discussed through analysis, simulation and experiment.","PeriodicalId":117576,"journal":{"name":"IAS '95. To obtain a performance characteristic suitable for a typical electric vehicle drive, in which short-term increase of current is applied, it is necessary to design an optimum value of direct-axis inductance. The paper presents an analysis of a hybrid motor design which uses a two-part rotor construction comprising a surface-magnet part and an axially-laminated reluctance part. This arrangement combines the properties of all other types of synchronous motor and offers a greater choice of design variables. It is shown that the desired form of performance may be achieved when the high-inductance axis of the reluctance part is arranged to lead the magnet axis by 90/spl deg/ (elec.).","PeriodicalId":117576,"journal":{"name":"IAS '95. Based on a suitable normalization, a systematic evaluation of the accuracy of analytical approximations results in corresponding areas of validity, depending on the dominant parameter line and DC reactances, respectively, and the effective DC voltage. Thereby, an exact model is proposed to describe the effect of DC ripple on the behaviour of harmonic amplitude and phase angle. In order to predetermine line current harmonics as easily as possible, the most effective formula can be obtained from corresponding decision areas, whereby the allowable errors are confirmed by comparing results of digital simulation. By the aid of this procedure of selection, assessments of worst case situations become feasible. With the knowledge of the phase angles, an estimation of the total harmonic generation of several converters as well as a better judgement of converters attending to preloading supply harmonics are achieved.","PeriodicalId":117576,"journal":{"name":"IAS '95.
