Remote wireless robotic manipulation systems can possibly offer high dexterity and sensation capabilities, while allowing millimeter-scale control by the surgeon. Past research focus on robotic manipulation using a wired bilateral system, most of which assumes an error-free and zero-delay environment. This paper addresses the effect of implementing adaptive carrier selection (ACS) and Kalman filter in simulated wireless bilateral system.","PeriodicalId":117050,"journal":{"name":"First Joint Eurohaptics Conference and Symposium on Haptic Interfaces for Virtual Environment and Teleoperator Systems. Runde","doi":"10.1109/WHC.2005.84","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/WHC.2005.84","url":null,"abstract":"In this paper we investigate the hardware and software challenges to integrate kinesthetic haptic force feedback into large-scale (i.e. human-sized or larger) virtual environments (VE). Based on a literature survey of current haptic interface technologies, we introduce a qualitative schema for the evaluation of large-scale haptic immersion of various haptic display types suitable to be used within such large VEs. The other focus of our research concentrates on the elaboration of a distributed software architecture for an adaptable and extendable framework for VE haptics integration. In particular we describe a specific haptics-server prototype implementation integrated into a three wall passive stereo CAVE system currently being built at the Fraunhofer IPA institute in Stuttgart.","PeriodicalId":117050,"journal":{"name":"First Joint Eurohaptics Conference and Symposium on Haptic Interfaces for Virtual Environment and Teleoperator Systems. It is based on a deformable mechanical structure capable of morphing its shape in order to imitate a desired object. Due to the physical presence of the resulting shape, the latter can intuitively be touched and explored with the whole hand. The prototype has been called SmartMesh [A. Mazzone et al., (2003)]. After a short review of the SmartMesh mechanism, this paper focuses on the controllability issue of such a multi-degrees of freedom structure and introduces the concept and the implementation of the control algorithm responsible for providing the required parameters for the actuation of the mechanical structure. The results emphasize the amazing deformation capability and expressiveness of a future haptic feedback enabled user interface device based on the SmartMesh concept.","PeriodicalId":117050,"journal":{"name":"First Joint Eurohaptics Conference and Symposium on Haptic Interfaces for Virtual Environment and Teleoperator Systems. In this study, we used TMS to stimulate the hand area of the primary motor cortex (Ml) and measured TMS-evoked forces in a multi-fingered grasp. This short report aims at presenting the experimental setup and some preliminary results. The analysis of the data from one subject suggests that TMS affects differently the grip force (which measures the overall force involved in the grasp) and the net force (which measures the net effect of all contact forces exerted on the object).","PeriodicalId":117050,"journal":{"name":"First Joint Eurohaptics Conference and Symposium on Haptic Interfaces for Virtual Environment and Teleoperator Systems. This is an example of how haptic qualities in general are lost in the transition from mechanical to electronic interface controls. Haptic feedback is a potential way of returning the sense of touch to the interface. In order to design meaningful haptic feedback we need to understand the role haptics take when people interact with technology. This article discusses the possibilities of haptic feedback in applications such as high speed crafts through studying the effect of a change in throttle sticks on the naval ships.","PeriodicalId":117050,"journal":{"name":"First Joint Eurohaptics Conference and Symposium on Haptic Interfaces for Virtual Environment and Teleoperator Systems. However, it has only a single degree of freedom, limiting it to very simple modeling and simulation exercises. Through modifications to the original haptic paddle design, a \"snaptic paddle\" has been created that allows two modular one-degree-of-freedom devices to be connected to form a single two-degree-of-freedom device that operates like a traditional joystick. The devices can also be used separately, creating a flexible, economical haptic interface for educational applications. The device successfully provides force feedback interaction, as will be shown in a demonstration at the World Haptics Conference.","PeriodicalId":117050,"journal":{"name":"First Joint Eurohaptics Conference and Symposium on Haptic Interfaces for Virtual Environment and Teleoperator Systems. By having low apparent mass of approximately 5 grams, we can realistically render linear switches, which themselves have a moving mass of only a few grams. This device utilizes a low inertia rotary motor, but over only a limited range of motion, allowing it to be driven without commutation. We constructed a linear, current controlled amplifier to drive the system. Additionally, the motor windings allow us to use electrical damping to add physical damping to the system to improve its performance.","PeriodicalId":117050,"journal":{"name":"First Joint Eurohaptics Conference and Symposium on Haptic Interfaces for Virtual Environment and Teleoperator Systems. This paper outlines the research, design, construction and testing of a completely portable slip/stretch feedback system for the fingertip. The device uses a V configuration of miniature motors to provide sensations of relative lateral motion (direction and velocity) onto the user's fingertips. This device has a mass of 22 g at the fingertip, 105 g at the forearm, Bluetooth communication to the simulation computer and a capacity of over 2 hrs continuous use. Testing involved user trails to determine quantitatively and qualitatively the realism and accuracy of the integrated system. These results show good levels of user ability to discriminate both directional and speed movements.","PeriodicalId":117050,"journal":{"name":"First Joint Eurohaptics Conference and Symposium on Haptic Interfaces for Virtual Environment and Teleoperator Systems. The task of the subjects was to make an extensive field of bars parallel to another at a variety of fixed positions, either on a horizontal plane or on the midsagittal plane, and either with their right hand or with their left hand. Settings were correlated with the orientations of the hand when placed at the same locations in a natural way. The parallelity settings deviated systematically from veridical. The patterns of the deviations were the same for all subjects. These haptically perceived parallelity settings can be considered as decided in a subject-dependent frame of reference intermediate to allocentric and egocentric reference frames.","PeriodicalId":117050,"journal":{"name":"First Joint Eurohaptics Conference and Symposium on Haptic Interfaces for Virtual Environment and Teleoperator Systems. Selective stimulation to superficial mechanoreceptors by temporal control of suction pressure 时间控制吸入压力对浅表机械感受器的选择性刺激

They stimulate the skin surface with suction pressure (SPS method) as our former paper proposed. The difference from the former device is that a single suction hole provides a pair of primitives. Since the identical hole provides the multiple primitives, we can expect multi-primitive tactile stimulation is realized more stably, and the physical structure is simpler than the former method. The method uses the frequency characteristics of the mechanoreceptor sensitivity and a feature of SPS that suction pressure through a hole does not reach the deep receptors, Pacinian corpuscles. We show the basic theory and results of fundamental experiments. In the experiments, we show the spatial feature of the virtual object (edged or round) can be controlled by the temporal profile of the primitives. We explain the reason of the phenomena based on a tactile perception model called simple bundle model.","PeriodicalId":117050,"journal":{"name":"First Joint Eurohaptics Conference and Symposium on Haptic Interfaces for Virtual Environment and Teleoperator Systems.
