Our new MAC, using OFDMA in the physical layer, can incorporate multiple concurrent transmissions or receptions in a dynamic manner and can adjust the collision probability based on the traffic load when nodes are endowed with a single half-duplex radio only. Simulation results show that our system improves throughput by up to 40 percent, reduces collision in control messages by up to 80 percent and reduces the average delay for data transmission by up to 20 percent.","PeriodicalId":117027,"journal":{"name":"2010 Wireless Telecommunications Symposium (WTS)","volume":"76 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114071168","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With the purpose of providing better-swifter-cheaper services, radio network optimisation plays a crucial role but faces enormous challenges. The concept of Dynamic Network Optimisation (DNO), therefore, has been introduced to optimally and continuously adjust network configurations, in response to changes in network conditions and traffic. However, the realization of DNO has been seriously hindered by the bottleneck of optimisation speed performance. An advanced distributed parallel solution is presented in this paper, as to bridge the gap by accelerating the sophisticated proprietary network optimisation algorithm, while maintaining the optimisation quality and numerical consistency. The ariesoACP product from Arieso Ltd serves as the main platform for acceleration. This solution has been prototyped, implemented and tested. Real-project based results exhibit a high scalability and substantial acceleration at an average speed-up of 2.5, 4.9 and 6.1 on a distributed 5-core, 9-core and 16-core system, respectively. This significantly outperforms other parallel solutions such as multi-threading. Furthermore, augmented optimisation outcome, alongside high correctness and self-consistency, have also been fulfilled. Overall, this is a breakthrough towards the realization of DNO.","PeriodicalId":117027,"journal":{"name":"2010 Wireless Telecommunications Symposium (WTS)","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-04-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132735622","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Mobile users specifically the high-speed platforms are dependent on connectivity from satellite systems. Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) in combination with dense encoding, offers a robust communication and spectrum compression. OFDM is sensitive to frequency shift. This results in intercarrier interference (ICI) and degrades bandwidth efficiency. High mobility platform, such as train and aircraft offer a challenging environment for increasing the spectral efficiency of the physical layer. This paper discusses the potential development of an Aeronautical Data Network (ADN) and its channel issues in particularly the high mobility and its effects of using an OFDM communication structure. OFDM ICI and frequency shift caused by the high mobility of the platform is investigated and potential methods are proposed.","PeriodicalId":117027,"journal":{"name":"2010 Wireless Telecommunications Symposium (WTS)","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-04-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117024354","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The UMTS technique, as a smooth replacement for GSM technique, provides an evolved path for the mobile operators to deploy the next generation IP based soft-switch mobile core networks. This paper first describes the basic architecture and topology of UMTS R4 core network and introduces two options in network planning: flat structure or layered structure. To propose an evolution path, the paper then suggests a “three layer structure” solution to seamlessly converge UMTS R4 core network with legacy GSM core network. The proposed solution approach achieves the all-IP vision and is capable of convergence with IMS and EPC.","PeriodicalId":117027,"journal":{"name":"2010 Wireless Telecommunications Symposium (WTS)","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-04-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116192066","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As more and more low-cost high-quality devices appear on the market and new applications emerge every day, short-range wireless personal area networks (WPANs), both low and high-data-rate, are on the horizon. Two major efforts of IEEE are underway to enhance the development of WPANs. One is the specification of IEEE 802.15.3a, also known as ultra wideband (UWB), used in high-rate WPANs. The other is the specification of IEEE 802.15.4 for low-rate WPANs (LR-WPANs). When deploying LR-WPAN devices into a target field, information about how sensors perform at various distances and orientations relative to each other will make optimal placement easier. If each node is placed to maximize its performance in the network, the lifetime and quality of service for the entire network will increase, therefore an understanding of the wireless channel-operating environment is necessary. In this work, we evaluate through measurements, the basic characteristics of the communication channel using IEEE 802.15.4 radio devices. The experiments were conducted on the esplanade at the Engineering building. It consisted in capture the spatial radio channel properties due to stationary structures and obstacles, and the resulting findings will serve as the basis of an eventual methodology for predicting radio channel quality given an arbitrary layout. A simple transmission scheme was designed, where device-1 (receiver) acted as an access point (AP) and device-2 (transmitter) acted as a sensor placed at a location of interest. The esplanade was divided into 26×32 1m-by-1m grids, and device-2 was sequentially placed at each grid point (x,y), for one measurement. The RSSI and PER of each received packet were saved. Average RSSI and PER metrics presented for each link measurement were calculated over 3000 transmitted packets. The results clearly show the anisotropic nature of all metrics. Specifically, radio links with the same line-of-sight distance did not necessarily have similar average RSSI, or PER. As the superposition of multipath components arriving from different paths can often result in higher energy detected by the receiver (RSSI), but the resulting signal can easily be distorted from the original waveform given the phase differences of those components. About 90% of the links had a PER less than 0.005, and the worst link observed got a PER of 0.054. Links with 0.85 or higher packet reception ratios are considered good links. Links with 0.15 or less packet reception ratios are considered bad links. For one link, however, no obvious blockings but only few clutters were observed; the lower link qualities are thus attributed to multipath effects due to surrounding reflectors. Radio links between the sensors radios exhibited different path losses at different locations. The path loss was not only a function of path distance alone but also showed complex dependency on blocking and multipath effects caused by the surrounding obstacles. Very often they require human intervention because telecom networks are complex systems composed of different nodes that need to be compatible in order to communicate and provide network services. Therefore in current telecommunication systems a network expert must check all the requirements and compatibilities of the network prior to activation of a new service. Automation of the assessment of network compatibility is one of the key enablers for Autonomic Management of telecom networks. In this paper we describe a new method for automatic end-to-end assessment of compatibility between network features in a telecom network. The method enables fast, easy and accurate decision making regarding the planning of new feature deployment or the upgrade of already existing features. We built a prototype that demonstrates the described method. It shows that our method is not bound to any type of telecom network and could be used to automate deployment or upgrade of a multiple-domain network.","PeriodicalId":117027,"journal":{"name":"2010 Wireless Telecommunications Symposium (WTS)","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-04-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124826540","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed system outperforms conventional companding systems using the same nonlinear companding functions with respect to SER without impairing PAPR reduction capability. The proposed system estimates a few autoregressive moving average (ARMA) model parameters of the difference signal between the companded and uncompanded OFDM envelopes and passes these parameters to the receiver. Upon receiving the ARMA model parameters, the receiver regenerates the difference signal and then adds it to the received companded OFDM envelope to recover the uncompanded OFDM signal. The traditional schemes employ decompanding process instead to reconstruct the uncompanded OFDM signal. Mathematical proofs and simulation results for three typical nonlinear companding functions show that, under mild sufficient conditions, the proposed scheme outperforms the conventional schemes with respect to SER performance without impairing PAPR reduction capability.","PeriodicalId":117027,"journal":{"name":"2010 Wireless Telecommunications Symposium (WTS)","volume":"55 7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-04-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124873167","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
