The objective of the researcher, an in-service English teacher, was to analyze the institute’s theoretical principles underlying each of the seven stages. These stages were studied in terms of the theories or approaches which guided the different stages in teaching and learning the English language. In order to provide an informed review of the theory and its application in practice, specialized authors, such as Richards and Rodgers (1993) or Harmer (2013), were revisited. Throughout the paper, the benefits and drawbacks students received when using the identified theories or approaches in their classes are reflected upon. Teacher ‘resistance’ is a natural response in such circumstances and one that can take a significant personal and professional toll, both on the individual and those in their community. In this article, I aim to take a more positive approach and frame teachers’ responses to change as a form of resilience, rather than resistance, and as a mindset that can be harnessed for the benefit of the individual as well as the organization. Primero se dan a conocer los elementos conceptuales básicos de interculturalidad, multiculturalidad, educación intercultural y formación de futuros docentes de idiomas. Luego se revisan las fuentes documentales y se dilucidan las tendencias que ven la interculturalidad como proceso pedagógico que debe responder a exigencias globales y no como construcción social y situada, como lo étnico (estado) y no como la diversidad cultural (proceso). They were encouraged to talk about their feelings and emotions through the development of ten workshops based on writing short stories from their own life experiences. The results showed that feelings and emotions are a part of students that cannot be ignored because they are a factor in the learning process. Limited access to computers and the internet, among other factors, are a drawback, thus, creating a digital gap. Nonetheless, the panorama for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) and the use of internet communication technologies (ICT) in Colombia is promising given the countless number of new resources found online. However, using ICT tools requires not only the teacher’s attention, but also governmental aid before they can be implemented in the EFL class. The scope of the ICT tools in the rural setting is vast and has a great impact on students. A set of problem-based activities became the mechanism to achieve the prime goal of this study. The instruments from which the data was collected were video-recordings, focus group interviews and students’ artifacts. This article analyzes and reflects on the way in which language teachers and students communicate in the language classroom. This analysis was done based on the rules of the Cooperative Principle, proposed by Paul Grice in 1975. The inquiry consisted on studying how the teacher and students flout the maxims of communication proposed by the principle (quality, quantity, relation and manner). For the analysis, an eighth grade English class at a private school was recorded, and parts of the video were extracted.
