An examination is made of the development of this project, including the rationale for maintaining a 25 Hz traction power system. The specific emphasis is on the power factor control and harmonic distortion on the utility company's 60 Hz system. The negotiations with the utility company to connect the first SFC to the existing 13.2 kV service and to provide a 230 kV service for the addition of two more SFCs are also discussed.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":115410,"journal":{"name":"ASME/IEEE Joint Conference on Railroads","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-04-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114708169","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The measurement signals produced by recording cars are analyzed by calculating the standard deviation per waveband and detecting the exceedence of particular threshold levels. The major problem in analyzing and interpreting these signals is how the results of individual signals should be combined to one overall result. The best practical solution is to normalize the standard deviations and take the largest one as the decisive one. This is purely an empirical approach in which a theoretical basis is lacking. The one solution to combining the different geometrical components is via vehicle response. This approach is discussed.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":115410,"journal":{"name":"ASME/IEEE Joint Conference on Railroads","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-04-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127037350","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With this automatic system, a microprocessor generates a speed profile corresponding to a specific change of cab signal. The system monitors train speed and, following a downward change of cab signal, requires that train speed be gradually reduced as the train moves farther into the block. The engineer can use a minimal air brake application, throttle reduction, dynamic braking, or a combination of the three to comply with the speed limit safely. A penalty brake application is imposed when the speed profile is violated. The automatic train control system was overlaid onto an existing continuous cab signal system.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":115410,"journal":{"name":"ASME/IEEE Joint Conference on Railroads","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-04-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133114735","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These are (1) assessment of tension tie between car and beam; (2) dynamic analysis of cars/trains traveling along the guideway at speeds to 100 mph; (3) analyses of guideway beam strength and rigidity; and (4) quarter-scale models to validate outrigger kinematics and modular makeup of the guideway and station. The analyses show that the system designs are valid for beam spans to 80 ft and speeds to 60 mph, with spans of 90 ft and speeds of 125 mph attainable if certain more stringent constraints are met. There are strong indications of suitability for operation at inter-city speeds as well.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":115410,"journal":{"name":"ASME/IEEE Joint Conference on Railroads","volume":"77 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-04-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131153401","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A need for inexpensive, passive transponders that require no electronics in the track equipment exists in remote areas. A metal-plate transponder system, in which information is encoded in the plate pattern as laid between the running rails, is studied. The design problems are to devise reliable plate detector hardware and to select suitable decoding algorithms, and to achieve protection against erroneous bit detection and incomplete reading of the message bits. The design principles and performance characteristics are stated in detail. The system demonstrates the feasibility of bidirectional decoding with dual direction and orientation capability, low-speed detection, including stopping over the transponder, high-speed detection (with timing validation), and error control, including single-error correction.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":115410,"journal":{"name":"ASME/IEEE Joint Conference on Railroads","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-04-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116523358","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Extensive tests were conducted on the propulsion system and the cars are currently in revenue service. The cars selected are 85-ft painted steel multiple-unit cars built by Pullman Standard in 1965. The braking system is a 26CMUE-80 electric pneumatic straight air pipe system supplied by New York Air Brake. The AC inverter propulsion packaging is a three-phase, variable-voltage, variable-frequency, gate turn-off thyristor, voltage-source inverter driving two three-phase, asynchronous traction motors. Each propulsion inverter is a microprocessor controlled, variable voltage, variable-frequency, voltage-source inverter using pulsewidth modulation (PWM) and square-wave regulation techniques. The propulsion inverter control strategy is derived to drive two asynchronous motors operating in parallel.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":115410,"journal":{"name":"ASME/IEEE Joint Conference on Railroads","volume":"180 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-04-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126072200","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The same concepts could apply to suburban electrified commuter railroads where electric operation is mandatory on critical center city terminal portions of a system. The proposed alternatives for heavy (i.e., high platform) rapid transit ought to have costs on the order of those usually associated with light rail transit while still providing the spaciousness and comfort associated with suburban heavy rail rapid transit. The unconventional motive power units described are intended to allow extension of existing (or proposed) electric rail transit into distant suburbs using nonelectrified railroad tract that may be abandoned or occasionally used by a freight train.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":115410,"journal":{"name":"ASME/IEEE Joint Conference on Railroads","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124431606","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In studying the replacement system, catenary systems worldwide were examined to determine their suitability. One major constraint was the existing support structure spacing of 300 ft. The pantograph study indicated that all existing and proposed pantographs were compatible with the existing system as well as with all of the proposed replacement systems. The railroad is now in the process of seeking bids for the reconstruction effort.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":115410,"journal":{"name":"ASME/IEEE Joint Conference on Railroads","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121580257","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
