Additionally, an NFC reader can leverage the coupled communication channel to support relatively heavy computational applications, such as sensing, visual displays, etc. Consequently, reliable and efficient power-transfer with robust communication in the cm reading range is required to enable various more demanding NFC-WISP applications. However, there is a fundamental tradeoff between wireless power delivery and resonator bandwidth, which are critical to NFC communication. Another common trait of magnetically coupled systems is the vulnerability to variations in tag reading distance and antenna misalignment. To mitigate these challenges, we present two simulation-based investigations to study the power transfer and bandwidth performance given different NFC reading range with consideration of parasitic effects. Firstly, we compare a 2-coil NFC system with a 3-coil NFC system via theoretical analysis utilizing a simplified simulation model by ignoring the cross-coupling effect. Secondly, we present the influence of cross-coupling effects of a 3-coil system using a complex model. Finally, we demonstrate the effect of parasitic capacitance across coils for both 2 and 3-coil systems.","PeriodicalId":113182,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE Wireless Power Transfer Conference (WPTC)","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115379863","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

First, we propose a concise design of magnetic metamaterials. A 6×6 planar array metamaterial slab is simulated to investigate its effect on power transmission between transmitter and receiver. The proposed metamaterials are fabricated for their application in the wireless power transfer system. Transmission and reflection coefficients of the system with 1-dimentional (including 1-slab and 2-slab), 2-dimentional, and 3-dimentional metamaterials at different positions are measured to investigate their influence on power transmission and to optimize the position of metamaterials in each case. Finally, the platform with metamaterials is utilized to light a 15W bulb to explicitly demonstrate the efficiency enhancement.","PeriodicalId":113182,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE Wireless Power Transfer Conference (WPTC)","volume":"92 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134146755","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This process has been well documented for targeting of either a single linear or nonlinear object. It can also change the magnetic field direction to straight if it has zero relative permeability. Previously reported metamaterials use only single characteristic which is a negative or a zero permeability to enhance efficiency by field confinement in wireless power transfer (WPT) systems. In this paper, we combined two kinds of structures of metamaterial cells, which have the negative and zero permeability. The hybrid metamaterial slab (HMS) is designed by using two spiral type patterns on a double layered PCB. It has the negative permeability at the edge of the slab and the zero permeability at the center of the slab. The HMS can confine greater magnetic fields around and inside transmit and receive coils. Therefore, the hybrid metamaterials can increase the power efficiency by 21.4% at 20 cm distance in 6.78 MHz WPT systems compared to the previous single permeability metamaterial slab (SMS).","PeriodicalId":113182,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE Wireless Power Transfer Conference (WPTC)","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132709798","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

From the analytical comparison of different matching circuit topology, the superiority of active matching circuit is suggested, and potentially there is 21.4 % improvement in wireless power transfer efficiency by using 4 cell active matching circuit, which can create 16 different impedance values. Also, the matching circuit design simulation can be simplified by choosing representative impedance values of coils utilizing K-means clustering and use these values as targets. This drastically reduce the time for the matching circuit design simulation, especially for the matching circuit with larger number of cells.","PeriodicalId":113182,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE Wireless Power Transfer Conference (WPTC)","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134530679","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We design a stacked patch antenna consisted of a driven patch and four parasitic patches. The proposed antenna performs well both in return loss and gain in the frequency band of 2.41~2.47 GHz which almost covers all channels of 2.4GHz-band wireless LAN. In the band of 2.41~2.47 GHz, the simulated return loss of proposed antenna is below -10 dB and the simulated gain is over 5 dBi. Furthermore, we design a rectifying circuit which also exhibits a high efficiency in the band of 2.41~2.47 GHz with the power level as low as -20 dBm. Especially, at 2.472 GHz, the measured efficiency of rectifier is 4.3%, 24.3%, 48.5%, 63% for different input powers of -30, -20, -10, 0 dBm, respectively.","PeriodicalId":113182,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE Wireless Power Transfer Conference (WPTC)","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131995811","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
