The flash point of degraded silicone liquid was lower than initial one. Thermal degradation products of silicone liquid were cyclic siloxane compounds and gases. The decrease in the flash point is due to generation of cyclic siloxane compounds. The major components of cyclic siloxane compounds are D3, D4, D5 and D5. By measuring the total amount of cyclic siloxane compounds by gas chromatography, the degree of the degradation of silicone liquid can be estimated. The main gaseous products are CH4 and H2, and those of aramid paper are CO2 and CO. When silicone liquid is heated together with aramid paper, major part of the produced gases are also these gases.","PeriodicalId":113059,"journal":{"name":"1980 IEEE International Conference on Electrical Insulation","volume":"2020 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1980-06-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114087709","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The measured insulation degradation characteristics are insulation resistance, dissipation factor, discharge intensity, discharge phase, partial discharge characteristics, y, etc. and breakdown voltage. Different types of functional test were carried out to evaluate the thermal life and voltage endurace life of the insulation system. The paper concludes that the insulation degradation characteristics make a drastic change with the type of degradation stress and a new location method to detect the local degradation will be needed to develop.","PeriodicalId":113059,"journal":{"name":"1980 IEEE International Conference on Electrical Insulation","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1980-06-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128148956","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is explained that, by using the pulse discrimination system originally developed by one of the authors, one may reduce or eliminate filtering and screening and undertake partial discharge measurements in the presence of external interference. The original system was rather slow and the paper describes a new faster version which enables partial discharges to be recorded in the presence of interference pulse rates of around 105 per second. The measurement system has a limited bandwidth and any common-mode radio interference entering the system within this bandwidth can be eliminated by the pulse discrimination system. The test results demonstrate that a single small pulse can be detected when it is buried in interference. The paper also shows that partial discharge characteristics taken under quiet conditions are similar to those recorded with considerable radio and pulse interference. When undertaking measurements under noisy conditions, some of the required pulses are lost as they are superimposed on interference. Methods of gathering data over a number of cycles of the supply voltage are therefore considered.","PeriodicalId":113059,"journal":{"name":"1980 IEEE International Conference on Electrical Insulation","volume":"2006 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1980-06-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129436567","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Partial discharge activity may be related to dynamic variables, such as time under voltage, overvoltages, and changes in temperature and/ or pressure. A computer controlled system which monitors such variables, in addition to partial discharge characteristics, is described. To improve the productivity of the system, several samples are energized simultaneously while the data acquisition is multiplexed. The temperature of the test samples may be controlled with ovens. A data logger measures test voltage and temperature of the units. Partial discharge activity is monitored both by a pulse height analyzer and the data logger. A mini-computer is used for control and data analysis. Results may be utilized immediately, as for adjustment of parameters, or subsequently used for correlation of partial discharge activity with other parameters in longer term tests. Results illustrating the use of the system are presented. Effects of temperature cycling on the partial discharge activity in several types of liquid impregnated capacitors, with differing dielectric pads (paper, film) and electrodes (foil, metallized), are shown. The applications and limitations of the system for capacitor evaluation are discussed.","PeriodicalId":113059,"journal":{"name":"1980 IEEE International Conference on Electrical Insulation","volume":"105 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1980-06-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124218617","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The fast component is attributed to charge carrier movement in the crystalline regions while the slow component is thought to be caused by electron motion in the amorphous parts. The dependence of the observed effects on the degree of crystallinity and the influence of SF6 on the slow component support this picture. Recent results of TSC-measurements give further support to the interpretation advanced here.","PeriodicalId":113059,"journal":{"name":"1980 IEEE International Conference on Electrical Insulation","volume":"64 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1980-06-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126552890","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The nature of space charge is closely related to the carrier trapping phenomena. In this paper, natures of carrier traps in various polymers were investigated by using x-ray induced thermally stimulated current (TSC) and thermoluminescence (TL) techniques. The TSC and TL techniques are powerful especially in high and low temperature regions, respectively. Most polymers except those of high ionic conduction such as polyvinyl chloride show remarkable TSC and TL peaks due to trapped carriers, suggesting an abundance of carrier traps. Most of these peaks correspond to the onset of molecular motions in polymers, suggesting that the carrier detrapping is closely related to molecular motions. There exist many traps in crystallites and/or in their interfacial regions. In polyethylene (PE), there are five or six kinds of carrier traps, which are considered to be due to physical defects such as cavities. Both oxidation and γ-irradiation introduce new deep traps into PE and they greatly influence the electrical conduction in PE.","PeriodicalId":113059,"journal":{"name":"1980 IEEE International Conference on Electrical Insulation","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1980-06-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122222340","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Six different designs of suspension-type insulators of the same diameter and of almost equal leakage paths were proposed and produced using zero porosity high grade porcelain. Artificial and natural pollution tests are carried out on the different shapes according to IEC standards. Dry insulators, clean-fog wetted insulators, and salt-fog wetted insulators were tested. The natural pollution tests were carried out after 12 months of exposure on a 20-meter — high tower sited in the \"Pyramids High Voltage Research Center\", Cairo West, which is an ideal position for simulating desert conditions. The metreological conditions during the exposure time were recorded and found to simulate closely the average conditions during the last five years. Analysis of the different test results lead to the most suitable insulator design for desert conditions in Egypt.","PeriodicalId":113059,"journal":{"name":"1980 IEEE International Conference on Electrical Insulation","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1980-06-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129776551","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
