Managing communications resources (that are diverse, heterogeneous, and produced by a wide range of vendors) via current network management solutions imposes major obstacles. Network management systems (NMS), that are currently available in the market, utilize standards-based as well as proprietary network management systems. Vendors recognize the need for \"Open\" NMS products and frequently announce new products (based on the international standards (IS and draft IS, DIS) and frameworks). This paper summarizes the challenges faced by the network manager who needs to manage today's networks and addresses the difficulties associated with implementing standards-based network management software in existing systems. This paper also identifies emerging network standards/profiles and their migration strategy. The author proposes a standard-based integrated NMS (INMS) architecture, that is loosely coupled, flexible, and easily expandable. Furthermore, this architecture will provide a stable yet flexible framework upon which an interoperable communications and network management system can be built. The performance of such hybrid schemes operating in Rayleigh fading channels is addressed in the paper. The fading is assumed to be slow with respect to the symbol rate. The majority of conventional multimedia transport protocols use only a basic error recovery mechanism such as selective retransmission or go-back-N. They do not consider integrated multimedia data. The designed error control mechanism uses a low-level error recovery mechanism as its basic error recovery procedure. Furthermore, it also supports the new high-level error recovery mechanism through the integration of each media into a multimedia service. An asynchronous system, Reed-Solomon (RS) codes for error correction, a frequency selective channel, and noncoherent detection at the hard-limited combining receiver are considered. It is shown how the parameters of the RS code, of the M-FSK signaling scheme, and of the frequency hopping system have to be chosen in order to maximize the spectral efficiency for a bit error rate of 10/sup -3/. The proposed method is to have a timeout mechanism in the ATM adaptation layer specification (AAL) that flushes an interleave matrix which is only partially filled. The timeout flush operation is only activated when a variable bit rate video coder does not generate enough amount of bit within a given time period due to an inactive scene. The interleaving delay can be upper bounded by choosing the timeout values. This approach does not require any modification to video coders, since the regulation of the maximum delay is supported solely as an AAL function. Successful results have been reported by using WDM (wavelength division multiplexing) in two types of optical network architectures: single-hop and multihop. It has been observed that, while neither of these schemes can adequately satisfy all requirements, yet single-hop and multihop networks have positive and negative properties that tend to complement and compensate each other. The authors exploit this situation by proposing a hybrid architecture HONET (hybrid optical network) which combines the concepts of both schemes, retaining their advantages and avoiding their limitations. HONET uses a multihop network for packet service and a single-hop network for circuit-switched service. The synchronizer uses a block window accumulator (BWA) as averaging filter and postprocessing to eliminate equivocation. Approximate expressions for the cycle slip probability, valid for sufficiently large E/sub s//N/sub o/, are derived for both wideband and narrowband postprocessing. Two methods to (numerically) evaluate these expressions are presented and are verified by Monte Carlo simulations of the cycle slips for the case of QPSK. The hybrid method combines simulation and theoretical results and is very accurate. The Gaussian approximation yields accurate results only for the case of narrowband postprocessing and moderate and large values of the BWA length. The computational requirements of the Gaussian approximation are considerably less than for the hybrid method, because the former requires no simulation; in turn, the hybrid method is computationally more efficient than straightforward Monte Carlo simulations of the cycle slips.
