Simon, Sami Hinedi","doi":"10.1109/ICC.1994.368944","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/ICC.1994.368944","url":null,"abstract":"Motivated by the theory of MAP carrier phase estimation, the authors have developed a number of closed loop structures suitably derived from maximum-likelihood (ML) and average-likelihood (AL) functions. Several of these structures reduce to previously known closed loop carrier phase synchronizers while others appear to be new. Of particular interest is one of the ML structures which, when properly optimized, gives improved mean-square phase error performance over the other ML and AL structures. The improvement is largest at low symbol SNR and is thus quite significant in applications that involve a combination of low rate coding and antenna arraying such as the NASA/JPL Galileo mission to Jupiter. The structures proposed in the paper are not exhaustive of the ways that closed loop phase synchronizers can be derived from open loop MAP estimation theory. The results are used to provide a thorough performance analysis. The extracted slot clock timing variance is evaluated as a function of the PPM number of slots, PLL bandwidth and the normalised fibre bandwidth for both pattern-dependent and receiver noise generated jitter. This paper describes a possible basis for a resource control protocol. A protocol consists of a mechanism for information exchange and a format for the information itself. Our proposal uses atomic actions as the information exchange mechanism and defines a possible information structure. This representation, the telecommunication configuration, is the 'data' in the atomic action. Implementing telecommunication configurations is a difficult problem if the algorithm has to cover all cases. This paper shows how artificial intelligence concepts can be used to simplify the problem. The current centralized architecture may be unsuitable with the increased processing load and handoff rate associated with microcells. Some distributed architectures based upon interconnected IEEE 802.6 MANs for wireless personal communications have been proposed recently. The IEEE 802.6 MAN is attractive since it also provides isochronous services which are quite suitable for voice communications. In such a network, a communication path between two mobile terminals may be inefficient due to the lack of better paths when the path is established or become inefficient due to the mobility of terminals, e.g., the path elongates and consumes too much isochronous channels. In this paper, a distributed paths migration scheme is proposed for the IEEE 802.6 based personal communication networks. This distributed scheme automatically recognizes inefficient paths and migrates them to better ones, if any. During the migration, the property of isochronous services is also preserved. The performance of this scheme is evaluated by simulations. Simulation results show that the proposed paths migration scheme dramatically reduces the number of isochronous channels consumed per path. In particular, it proposes a unified congestion control scheme for mixed X.25/frame relay networks which meets users' requirements of effectiveness, fairness, and implementation efficiency. Key elements of the design include early detection of impending congestion by the various network resources, explicit notification of congestion information to the affected network services, and the use of adaptive rate and window control mechanisms by the various services to limit traffic admission into the network during overload. A comprehensive simulation test-bed was constructed for evaluating and tuning the proposed algorithms, and the results were verified against live networking equipment. Simulation results confirm the success of the congestion control strategy in maximizing network throughput, and minimizing users' packet loss rate and end-to-end delay under a wide range of congestion situations. Mesh/ring and mesh/arc networks are compared in terms of equipment counts required to achieve fully survivability against single span failure. Heuristic design procedures are developed. The mesh/arc network architecture is shown to be superior in all cases studied. Two main contributions to survivable network design/planning have resulted from this study. The first is the use of the network nodal degree distribution to partition a network into core and access regions. Special attention is given to the unique unidirectional transmission nature of ADSL. A set of noise environments is presented for related computer simulation studies and hardware tests. A set of mid-CSA test loops is also proposed for performance evaluation under conditions of T1 NEXT interference. To simplify calibration procedures, noise and loop models are revealed in FIR (finite impulse response) filter form and can be measured in dB loss or dBm/Hz power density terms. SFIT is a technique that tests a system's fault tolerance by injecting software faults into the service manager and observing the behavior in the fault manager. Its advantage is that it introduces fairness without wasting channel slots and can converge very fast to the steady state where fair bandwidth allocation is achieved. However, it may discriminate against lightly loaded stations in terms of delay. In this paper we propose a variation of the NSW BWB mechanism which enables lightly loaded stations to have a faster access to the transmission medium and thus lower delays. We provide a proof of the fairness of the new mechanism and investigate its delay performance.
