The photoelectrochemical properties of the nanocrystalline TiO/sub 2/ electrodes sensitized by porphyrin derivatives with different functional groups, e.g., carboxyl, sulfonate and phenyl were investigated. It was found that the all porphyrin derivatives used in this study had sensitization effect. The interaction between the porphyrin and the TiO/sub 2/ surface is determined and compared using UV-vis spectra. The adsorption behavior of the porphyrin on the TiO/sub 2/ electrode surface was discussed. Furthermore, we examined the photoelectrochemical properties of a free base porphyrin with only one carboxylate group (H/sub 2/TC1PP), the result obtained was compared with that of porphyrin with four carboxyl groups (H/sub 2/TC4PP). It reveals that the higher photocurrent intensity of H/sub 2/TC4PP can be obtained than that of H/sub 2/TC1PP, and the energy conversion efficiency of the solar cell is very dependent on the structure of porphyrin. These results indicate that the binding state between the dye and semiconductor is an important factor affecting the properties of the dye-sensitized solar cell.","PeriodicalId":111348,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2001 1st IEEE Conference on Nanotechnology. Cantilever chips have to be cut manually from the wafer by means of a razor blade and then grasped, positioned and glued to the AFM tip holder. This operation, even if performed by trained operators, has a 70% yield rate. This paper describes step by step the same task performed by a force feedback-based micromanipulation system developed in the authors' laboratory. The 100% yield rate achieved is a very impressive result, considering that unskilled operators have carried out the tests.","PeriodicalId":111348,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2001 1st IEEE Conference on Nanotechnology. In order to solve this problem, instead of adopting the well known iterative method, a new game-theoretic algorithm is developed by translating the problem to a checkmate problem of a game analogous to chess or shogi. It is proved by numerical experiments that this works well with good efficiency.","PeriodicalId":111348,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2001 1st IEEE Conference on Nanotechnology. Two nanoparticle friction characterization methods are proposed in this paper: (1) Sliding the particle on the substrate while it is bonded on a microfabricated cantilever, (2) Nanorobotic pushing of the particle with the sharp tip of a microfabricated AFM cantilever. Modeling of these methods are realized and experiments are conducted for the latter method using a piezoresistive AFM cantilever. 500 nm radius gold-coated latex particles are pushed on a silicon substrate. Preliminary results show that different frictional behavior such as sliding, rolling, and rotation can be observed, and frictional coefficients can be measured using these techniques at the nano scale.","PeriodicalId":111348,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2001 1st IEEE Conference on Nanotechnology. The LBT crystalline size - which is affected by La/sup 3+/ dopant content, drying temperature of quasi-gel and calicination temperature of dried gel - is the most essential factor that influences the humidity sensitivity and fabrication of the sensing element that composes the LBT polycrystals. The sensor, made of 15/spl sim/25nm powders, displays consistent humidity sensitivity and feasibility of fabrication. Therefore, the samples are divided into two classes according to the crystalline size. Those with the crystalline size from 15nm to 25nm are considered as ideal, while those with the crystalline size less than 15nm and more than 25nm are inconclusive. In order to obtain parameters assuring preparation of the polycrystals with the crystalline size from 15 to 25nm, a combination of a novel pattern recognition (PR) and artificial neural networks (ANN) has been utilized to design the process parameters.","PeriodicalId":111348,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2001 1st IEEE Conference on Nanotechnology. A Nd:YAG laser has been used to dry fabricate micro channels (25 /spl mu/m-100 /spl mu/m diameter) in a 1 cm/sup 3/ fused silica substrate by thermal-induced processing. By controlling the locations of these initiating micro channels on a silica cube, a 1D-controllable self-connecting nano fracture can be formed as a rectangular channel. This nano channel is smooth with extremely high aspect ratio (/spl sim/10/sup 4/ depth to width ratio). The length is controlled by the separation of the initiating micro channels. This laser-based nano channel fabrication technique is fast, and inexpensive with potential applications in capillary electrophoresis, and electro-osmosis driven nano-filtration.","PeriodicalId":111348,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2001 1st IEEE Conference on Nanotechnology. Nanostructured layers were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman spectroscopy and photoluminescence. With Raman spectroscopy, it was found that the nearly free H/sub 2/-molecules in nano-voids appear in hydrogen plasma treated silicon. These nanovoids filled by hydrogen molecules are stable up to 400/spl deg/C. It was established by SEM that the treated samples exhibit structures with the typical dimensions well below 100 nm. It is shown that the doping of such nano-structured layers by phosphorous can be done during the hydrogenation which leads to the formation of high conductive nano-structures. After the Ar laser irradiation in air the nano-structured silicon layers exhibit a broad photoluminescence (PL) in the visible spectral range, which can be attributed to the evolution of chemical structures and dimensions of Si based nano-clusters due to the laser assisted processes. The advantage of the proposed method is that there is no need for any deposition process in this case to produce a Si-based nano-structured layer. The possible applications of the silicon-based nano-structured layers by the proposed method are discussed.","PeriodicalId":111348,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2001 1st IEEE Conference on Nanotechnology.
