Normally, in any MA based sensor network, it is an important research issue to find out an optimal itinerary for the MA in order to achieve efficient and effective data collection from multiple sensory data source nodes. In this paper, we firstly investigate a number of conventional single MA itinerary planning based schemes, and then indicate some shortcomings of these schemes, since only one MA is used by them. Having these investigations and analysis, a novel genetic algorithm based multiple MAs itinerary planning (GA-MIP) scheme is proposed to address the shortcomings of large latency and global unbalancing of using single MA, and its effectiveness is proved by conducting the extensive experiments in professional environment.","PeriodicalId":111317,"journal":{"name":"2010 The 5th Annual ICST Wireless Internet Conference (WICON)","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115249092","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The objective is to propose a cross-layer optimized forwarding scheme to maximize the Successful Transmission Rate (STR) while satisfying the given end-to-end energy consumption constraint. The channel coding, energy allocation, and route planning are jointly considered to improve the STR. After formulating the problem as a local stochastic optimization, we propose a low-complexity distributed scheme to reduce the implementation complexity. We show by simulations that the proposed scheme can achieve much higher STR in comparison with existed energy-efficient routing protocols, in which no joint design is considered.","PeriodicalId":111317,"journal":{"name":"2010 The 5th Annual ICST Wireless Internet Conference (WICON)","volume":"229 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122119462","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The evolvable application reliability requirements and the fluctuating perturbations lead to continuous deviation between the attained and desired reliability. Using an existing approach that guarantees a highest reliability is not appropriate for WSN as this over-provisioning wastes the most valuable resources, e.g., energy. In this paper, we present a new approach called as Tunable Reliability with Congestion Control for Information Transport (TRCCIT) in WSN. To provide probabilistically guaranteed tunable reliability TRCCIT implements localized techniques such as probabilistic adaptive retransmissions, hybrid acknowledgment and retransmission timer management. TRCCIT pro-actively alleviates the network congestion by opportunistically transporting the information on multiple paths. TRCCIT fulfills application reliability requirements in a localized way, which is desirable for scalability and adaptability to large scale WSNs. Simulation results show that TRCCIT provides tunable reliability and efficiently mitigates the congestion.","PeriodicalId":111317,"journal":{"name":"2010 The 5th Annual ICST Wireless Internet Conference (WICON)","volume":"136 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124249280","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We present a novel cross-layer energy-adaptive scheduling and queue management framework EAED (Energy Aware Early Detection) for minimizing energy consumption in WLAN mesh networks. EAED aims at saving energy by delaying and early dropping packets with respect to target delay and packet loss constraints. We argue that gracefully trading off energy against QoS is justified by future networking scenarios where high connectivity is more important than bandwidth. We show performance results of EAED with real-time traffic in realistic WLAN Mesh network simulation scenarios and discuss possible use-cases for EAED framework. We conclude that considerable energy savings can be obtained with our scheme under certain limitations and propose ideas for further improvement.","PeriodicalId":111317,"journal":{"name":"2010 The 5th Annual ICST Wireless Internet Conference (WICON)","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131015202","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since they are either worn or implanted into human body, these sensors must be very small in size and light in weight. The energy consequently becomes an extremely scarce resource, and energy conservation turns into a first class design issue for body sensor networks (BSNs). This paper deals with this issue by taking into account the unique characteristics of BSNs in contrast to conventional wireless sensor networks (WSNs) for e.g. environment monitoring. A prediction-based data transmission approach suitable for BSNs is presented, which combines a dual prediction framework and a low-complexity prediction algorithm that takes advantage of PID (proportionalintegral-derivative) control. Both the framework and the algorithm are generic, making the proposed approach widely applicable. The effectiveness of the approach is verified through simulations using real-world health monitoring datasets.","PeriodicalId":111317,"journal":{"name":"2010 The 5th Annual ICST Wireless Internet Conference (WICON)","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129369799","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A connected dominating set (CDS) is an infrastructure used to manage broadcast of packets such that only nodes in the CDS forward the packets. In this paper an enhanced algorithm to construct a connected dominating set is presented. In the first step, we use a known local algorithm to determine the primary CDS. Then an efficient probabilistic pruning process is suggested to implement the secondary CDS. As a result, the number of nodes in the pruned CDS decreases efficiently. The performance of the suggested method, in terms of the size of the secondary CDS and the message length of broadcast, is discussed and compared to an efficient local algorithm based on complete 2-hop information having a message length O(m2), where m is the maximum degree of nodes in the network. Simulations show that our method is good for sparse networks, while for dense networks, it works almost similarly like the algorithm using complete 2-hop information. Our algorithm has the message length O(m) and decreases the size of CDS significantly. Therefore, it has a better performance in contrast to the algorithm with complete 2-hop information.","PeriodicalId":111317,"journal":{"name":"2010 The 5th Annual ICST Wireless Internet Conference (WICON)","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126701719","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We investigate the interaction between these two popular categories of traffic and find that conventional solution approaches, such as enhanced TCP variants, priority queues, bandwidth limitation, and traffic shaping do not always achieve the goals. TCP and VoIP traffic does not easily coexist because of TCP aggressiveness and data burstiness, and the self-interference nature of multihop traffic. We found that enhanced TCP variants (Reno, Vegas, C-TCP, CUBIC, Westwood) fail to coexist with VoIP in the wireless multihop scenarios. Surprisingly, even priority schemes, including those built into the MAC such as RTS/CTS or 802.11e, generally cannot protect voice, as they do not account for the interference outside communication range. We present VAGP (Voice Adaptive Gateway Pacer) - an adaptive bandwidth control algorithm at the access gateway, that dynamically paces wired-to-wireless TCP data flows based on VoIP traffic status. VAGP continuously monitors the quality of VoIP flows at the gateway and controls the bandwidth used by TCP flows before entering the wireless multihop. To also maintain utilization and TCP performance, VAGP employs TCP specific mechanisms that suppress certain retransmissions across the wireless multihop. Compared to previous proposals for improving TCP over wireless multihop, we show that VAGP retains the end-to-end semantics of TCP, does not require modifications of endpoints, and works in a variety of conditions: different TCP variants, multiple flows, internet delays, different patterns of interference, different multihop topologies, different traffic patterns.","PeriodicalId":111317,"journal":{"name":"2010 The 5th Annual ICST Wireless Internet Conference (WICON)","volume":"121 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134542523","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the future, more and more mobile devices will be capable of supporting more than one access technology. For being able to use these technologies simultaneously, there is a need for multihoming capabilities. Due to the variety of access technologies and the ability to use them simultaneously, new concepts for managing multihoming are needed. Higher requirements on efficiency and user satisfaction put new challenges on decision processes for multihoming. These higher requirements can be met by incorporating context information in the decision process. To enable context-based decisions, there is the need for determining, acquiring, and managing the required context information as well as the need for a decision scheme facilitating this information.","PeriodicalId":111317,"journal":{"name":"2010 The 5th Annual ICST Wireless Internet Conference (WICON)","volume":"90 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131504072","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
