Many solution have emerged in last years based on power converters with emulation of inertia. In this paper, we explore the concept of distributed virtual inertia (DVI) by investigating a new control method that use the common DC bus capacitors in the DC link of the converter as a buffer of energy to provide an equivalent mechanical inertial response. Using time-domain simulations with a detailed two-stage Photovoltaic (PV) inverter, we observe and discuss the benefits in the grid frequency.","PeriodicalId":111104,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE 14th International Conference on Compatibility, Power Electronics and Power Engineering (CPE-POWERENG)","volume":"414 3","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121003610","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The combination converters provide two or three different DC outputs (depending on the combination), with different conversion ratios. The main advantage of the proposed converters is the low number of components used in the combination (two-output configurations require two link capacitors, and three-output configurations require three link capacitors) and two complementary phase clocks, which may reduce size and manufacturing costs for many applications. The DC-DC combination converters are designed to be fully integrated, and were implemented in a 65nm CMOS technology. The analysis of the proposed configurations for different performance modes and load conditions is presented, and simulation results show that these combination converter topologies are suitable for multiple-output switched-capacitor DC-DC converters with multiple conversion ratios.","PeriodicalId":111104,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE 14th International Conference on Compatibility, Power Electronics and Power Engineering (CPE-POWERENG)","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126421045","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to improve its driving range, this research provides an energy management strategy for the power distribution system of hybrid electric vehicles. The system architecture consists of the main energy source, which is a fuel cell connected to the load via a power converter, and the secondary energy source, which is a battery connected in parallel to the load. Both energy sources provide the power to move the vehicle. In this paper, the first goal is to analyze the influence of several parameters in the energy management optimization. Those parameters are the fuel cell power range, internal resistance and open-circuit voltage; the power converter efficiency; and the internal resistance and open-circuit voltage of the battery. The second goal is to analyze the feasibility of using simplified models of the battery open-circuit voltage and the fuel cell internal variable resistance. Every analysis is developed within an energy management optimization process, which minimizes the total energy losses in the fuel cell and battery over a working day (8 hours).","PeriodicalId":111104,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE 14th International Conference on Compatibility, Power Electronics and Power Engineering (CPE-POWERENG)","volume":"206 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122610651","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, a hybrid probabilistic algorithm is proposed to accurately and efficiently predict ideal generation levels of individual generators to minimize the total system cost (as per AC-OPF), while having no information on the grid structure and with limited information on system variables. The proposed hybrid algorithm combines the use of correlation analysis, k-means clusters, and kernel density estimation (KDE), to predict ideal generation levels of each generator based only on historical datasets of local information (i.e. adjacent load centers). By simulating the AC-OPF problem on the IEEE 9-bus test system, a historical dataset of 1000 samples is synthetically generated and randomized local information is given as input for each agent. Quasi-deterministic Monte-Carlo simulations with 100000 samples were used for validation. In the most uncertain operating conditions, the proposed algorithm was capable of predicting the ideal generation level of the most expensive generator with a 1.65% error, while being three times faster than a Neural Network (NN), taking only 0.39 seconds to run on a standard laptop computer.","PeriodicalId":111104,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE 14th International Conference on Compatibility, Power Electronics and Power Engineering (CPE-POWERENG)","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123953471","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These controllers depend on the calculation of global average of the source voltages and ideal value of the current that each source must share. These values are usually calculated using an all-to-all communication network which is not easily scalable. In this paper, ideal current sharing based controller is extended for reduced communication network. For each converter, the presented method involves a consensus-based ideal current estimator and average voltage estimator. The error between these estimates with respect to the current/voltage of the converter is used to modify its droop characteristic. In literature, it is shown that similar performance can be achieved even in the presence of a reduced communication network by using higher values of weights on communication links. As the information communicated among the sources is discrete, higher values of weights may lead to unstable operation. In this paper, an upper bound is determined on the range of weight. Roots loci plots are used to show the effect of variation in weights of communication links in a given communication graph on small signal stability of the system. The efficacy of consensus based controller is validated using detailed simulation studies in Matlab/Simulink.","PeriodicalId":111104,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE 14th International Conference on Compatibility, Power Electronics and Power Engineering (CPE-POWERENG)","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123994705","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The impact of this demand is mostly notable at the distribution side as an outcome of EV users home charging preferences. Currently, most EVs charge their batteries through level 1 charger at home. However, the shorter charging times and the declining prices of level 2 chargers favor a switch from level 1 into level 2 chargers at residential premises. As a ramification, this will cause a lamentable peak in the residential load profile, and consequently power utilities will face the impact of elevated number of level 2 chargers with uncontrolled EV charging. To foresee these consequences, using the IEEE-33 Bus radial distribution system, we build a discrete event simulator and present real-life assessment of different EV penetration rates with various level 2 charger adoption rates. We expose that 50% EV penetration along with 50% level 2 chargers deployment may create an undesirable situation on the distribution network. Furthermore, we simulate EV users’ charging behavior over different pricing techniques. The collected results show that available pricing techniques cannot maintain the voltage level over minimum desired threshold especially during peak times.","PeriodicalId":111104,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE 14th International Conference on Compatibility, Power Electronics and Power Engineering (CPE-POWERENG)","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124024937","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Model predictive control has become lately very attractive for power electronics applications, especially in the control of inverters. This includes grid-connected and islanded inverters as well as those creating microgrids systems. The finite control set model predictive controller allows the control to be implemented in a series of discrete time steps for converter control. The finite control set model predictive control method is implemented in both inter-connected and islanded modes of operation for multiple distributed generators in this article, where each generator has its own controller. In the grid-connected mode, the focal control is of power contribution from each distributed generator while voltage magnitude and frequency are regulated in the islanded mode of operation. The control and process variables consequently change contingent upon the mode of operation. Results have been presented on the ability of the controller to track varying power generation as well as dynamic load change. The proposed control algorithm has been simulated with linear loads and step changes in a Matlab/SIMULINK based microgrid model.","PeriodicalId":111104,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE 14th International Conference on Compatibility, Power Electronics and Power Engineering (CPE-POWERENG)","volume":"59 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128629756","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, different types of ESS are reviewed, including chemical, mechanical, electrical and electrochemical storage systems, and the right choice of ESS is evaluated for performing grid applications and services, focusing on the possibility of performing multiple or stacked grid services. Various grid services are evaluated, including energy arbitrage, peak shaving, spinning reserves, frequency regulation and renewable energy integration. The analyses confirm that certain types of ESS such as compressed air ESS, electrochemical batteries and redox flow batteries are able to provide multiple grid applications, although lithium-ion batteries are proven the most suitable energy storage technology given the recent technical and market maturity.","PeriodicalId":111104,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE 14th International Conference on Compatibility, Power Electronics and Power Engineering (CPE-POWERENG)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128819967","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to compensate the mismatch between power supply and the load demand, an energy storage system (BESS) is also included. The use of second-life lithium-ion batteries in the BESS contributes to reduce the cost of the system. A cost function composed of the total income and the cost of the BESS and the installed load charging ports is defined in order to determine the optimal second-life BESS capacity and load rating. Three constraints regarding the power of BESS, the state-of-charge (SOC) of BESS, and the loss of power supply probability are included in the optimization problem. The first and second constraints ensure that the BESS works properly, whereas the third one aims to meet the load demand. Moreover, with the lack of available historical data of the load for e-bike charging stations, a load model is developed by considering the time of the day and the weather conditions. In order to evaluate the proposed method, a case study is defined using real long-term weather data collected in Montreal, Canada and considering the design of a 1.2-kW e-bike charging station.","PeriodicalId":111104,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE 14th International Conference on Compatibility, Power Electronics and Power Engineering (CPE-POWERENG)","volume":"129 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116334985","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
