However, these procedures are restricted by corneal thickness, corneal curvature, and the risk of postoperative ectasia. When dealing with high degrees of myopia, phakic intraocular lenses (pIOLs) can correct a wider range with a more superior quality of vision and refractive outcomes. However, the potential risk of damage to corneal endothelial cells remains one of the main concerns regarding pIOL implantation. Aim To evaluate the possibility and magnitude of endothelial cell loss following implantation of Artisan pIOL for the treatment of high myopia. Patients and methods The study comprised twelve eyes with high myopia implanted with Artisan pIOL. In this prospective interventional study, preoperative and postoperative specular microscopy (NIDEK CEM-530 Specular Microscope) was conducted to assess changes in endothelial cell count over 6 months. Results Preoperative mean endothelial cell count was 2748.33 ± 73.594 cells/mm2. It was 2736.75 ± 82.275 cells/mm2 at 1 month after surgery, which changed to 2567.50 ± 104.458 cells/mm2 at 6 months postoperatively. The mean cell loss after 6 months was 6.19%. No significant changes were found in other endothelial parameters, including average cell size, percentage of hexagonality, and coefficient of variation. The mean uncorrected visual acuity improved from 0.033 ± 0.005 preoperatively to 0.708 ± 0.08 after surgery, and the mean spherical equivalent improved from −16.729 ± 1.303 D preoperatively to − 0.354 ± 0.161 D after surgery. Conclusion Implantation of Artisan lens is a safe way for dealing with high myopia. No significant change was observed in endothelial cells over 6 months of observation. It also had excellent results regarding its predictability and efficacy. A longer follow-up period is required to monitor the effect on the corneal endothelium on the long term.","PeriodicalId":110854,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Current Medical Research and Practice","volume":"78 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115314479","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In Egypt, Trichophyton violaceum and Microsporum canis were the most commonly detected dermatophytes in TC. Etiological diagnosis is confirmed by fungal culture. However, lack of availability and delayed results of this confirmatory procedure may postpone the treatment increasing the chance of contagion. Dermoscopic examination is a fast and inexpensive technique that is recommended as a complementary tool to diagnose TC. The aim of our study is to spot dermoscopic features that may help dermatologists to differentiate between TC caused by T. violaceum and TC caused by M. canis. Patients and methods Our study describes 87 child patients clinically diagnosed with TC, comprising 61 patients with TC by M. canis and 26 patients by T. violaceum, who were mycologically confirmed by direct KOH test and fungal growth on Sabouraud's agar media. Dermoscopic examination was performed by DermLite II PRO HR. Results The observed dermoscopic features among 61 patients infected with M. canis were comma hairs in 48 (78.7%) cases, broken hairs in 52 (85.2%) cases, diffuse scaling in 48 (78.7%) cases, corkscrew hairs in 38 (62.3%) cases, and proximal sheath in 33 (54.1%) cases. Dermoscopic features among 26 patients infected with T. violaceum were comma hairs in 24 (92.3%) cases, broken hairs in 18 (69.2%) cases, diffuse scaling in eight (30.8%) cases, corkscrew hairs in 19 (73.1%) cases, and proximal sheath in six (23.1%) cases. Conclusion Dermoscopy can be used as an auxiliary tool in predicting the possible causative agent in suspected TC cases.","PeriodicalId":110854,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Current Medical Research and Practice","volume":"1956 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128033515","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Introduction MRI has a special ability to evaluate both renal structure and function objectively without any radiation hazards. Patients and methods This study enrolled 38 patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and 30 participants as healthy volunteers (sex and age matched). Abdominal MRIs with DWI results were compared with the level of estimated glomerular filtration rate. Results There were no significant differences in the ADC values of our studied patients between the right and left kidneys or between male and female. The entire control group had facilitated diffusion, whereas 70 and 30% patients with CKD had facilitated and restricted diffusion, respectively. Patients with CKD had significantly lower ADC in comparison with control group. The mean ADC was significantly decreasing with advancing stage of CKD, where stage I CKD had the highest mean ADC, whereas stage V CKD had lowest mean ADC. The ADC had a negative weak correlation with serum creatinine (r = −0.30; P = 0.04) but a positive moderate correlation with creatinine clearance (r = 0.56; P = 0.01). Conclusion The renal ADC had 86% sensitivity and 100% specificity in diagnosing chronic kidney disease, so the authors can depend on DWI and ADC in diagnosis and differentiating CKD stages.","PeriodicalId":110854,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Current Medical Research and Practice","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131352993","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Aim The goal of this study was to detect the causes that contribute to failure to thrive among children in Egypt. Participants and methods This is a cross-section study that included 100 infants with faltering growth. Their ages ranged from 1 month to 2 years. Full history and clinical examination including all anthropometric measures were done for all infants in the study. Investigations included full blood count, stool analysis, urine analysis, in addition to any further investigation to prove the diagnosis. Results This study showed that 61% were males, whereas 39% were females. Poor oral intake was the most common complaint that was present in 90% of studied cases. Insufficient intake accounted for the most common etiology of faltering growth, whereas persistent or recurrent gastroenteritis was significantly related to growth faltering. Underweight was significantly related to maternal age between 18 and 30 years old. Stunting was more prevalent in preterm infants and those with poor dietary diversity, whereas wasting was significantly related to increase in family size. Conclusion Risk factors contributing to faltering growth were low maternal age for underweight, prematurity, and poor dietary diversity for stunting and birth order more than third child for wasting. Insufficient intake and gastroenteritis were the most important contributing factors of faltering growth.","PeriodicalId":110854,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Current Medical Research and Practice","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124755811","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

When the authors recommend the child to slow down, say it again, take a breath, this increases his anxiety and fear, produces more difficulties with speaking and, as a cycle it in return make more fear, anxiety, and expectation of stuttering. Aim The aim of the study was to assess stuttering severity and correlate it with the degree of anxiety in school-aged children who are stuttering. Settings and design It is a comparative study. Patients and methods In this study, there were two groups: The study group consisted of 50 stuttering children with age that ranged from 6 to 16 years. The control group consisted of 50 children selected from the general population who have normal fluency; they were age-matched and sex-matched with the participants in the study group. Results There was a highly significant positive correlation between stuttering severity and the degree of anxiety/depression problems among the stuttering group with a P value of 0.001. Conclusion There is a significant relationship between severity of stuttering and presence of anxiety among school-aged children. This result can be useful in treatment programs for children who stutter, especially in the presence of anxiety, social phobia, and depression.","PeriodicalId":110854,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Current Medical Research and Practice","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126648285","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Dichlorvos or 2,2-dichlorovinyl dimethyl phosphate (DDVP) is an organophosphate compound that is toxic to the hippocampus. Vitamin E is an antioxidant. Aim To evaluate the potential ameliorating effect of vitamin E supplementation on dichlorvos (DDVP)-induced toxicity in the hippocampus of male albino rat. Materials and methods In total, 40 male-adult rats aged 3 months were divided into five groups: group A (control): they received no treatment. Group B (treated): DDVP given at a dose of 2.5 mg/kg body weight/day for 4 weeks. Group C (protective): DDVP at the same previous dose cotreated with vitamin E at a dose of 200 mg/kg body weight/day for 4 weeks. Group D (therapeutic): DDVP given at the same previous dose for 4 weeks. Post-DDVP administration, rats were further treated with vitamin E at the same previous dose for another 4 weeks. Group E (rehabilitated): DDVP given at the same previous dose for 4 weeks. Post-DDVP administration, rats were further treated with distilled water for another 4 weeks. For each group, brains of rats were processed for light microscopy (gallocyanin chrom alum stain). Results Group B (treated) showed degenerative changes in the hippocampal principal cells. Group C (protective), showed improvement of cells more or less similar to control. Group D (therapeutic) showed improvement of cells near to control. Group E (rehabilitation) showed marked deterioration of cells in comparison with control. Conclusions DDVP had a toxic effect on rat hippocampus, that did not improve by rehabilitation. Vitamin E was found to be necessary for amelioration of the hazards of DDVP toxicity and its protective effect is more obvious than its therapeutic effect.","PeriodicalId":110854,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Current Medical Research and Practice","volume":"93 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133996380","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
