It uses an adaptation of the standard close-range photogrammetry method called Direct Linear Transformation to infer the 3D co-ordinates of anatomical landmarks from 3 radiographic images of the subject's trunk. It then deforms in 3D high-resolution anatomical primitives (reference bones) obtained by ct-scan reconstruction of a dry specimen. Free-form deformation is calculated using a new formulation of dual kriging equations. In-vivo validation of this method on 40 scoliotic vertebrae gives an overall accuracy of 3.5/spl plusmn/4.1 mm, making it an adequate tool for diagnosis and mechanical analysis purposes. This new method can also find applications in biological and synthetic actors real time tracking and animation.","PeriodicalId":110347,"journal":{"name":"Second International Conference on 3-D Digital Imaging and Modeling (Cat. Facilities for automated view planning, collision avoidance and 3D data management are combined with a graphical user interface to give the operator control of an integrated virtual digitizing environment. Primary objectives for the design are to increase the speed of practical digitizing tasks, while ensuring that requirements on sampling density and uniformity are respected. An important design principle is that repetitive and well defined procedures are managed by the system, while the operator is encouraged to influence digitizing strategy at a high level. The prototype implementation using Hymarc's Hyscan 45C laser digitizer is described, and early experimental results are reported.","PeriodicalId":110347,"journal":{"name":"Second International Conference on 3-D Digital Imaging and Modeling (Cat. A nonlinear system model is used which accommodates radial distortion in the camera lens. The way in which stripe data is extracted from the camera images lends to a natural formulation of the calibration problem as a nonlinear least squares problem. This can then be solved using standard techniques.","PeriodicalId":110347,"journal":{"name":"Second International Conference on 3-D Digital Imaging and Modeling (Cat. Because usually it is difficult to get enough edges to reconstruct a 3D facial model with edge-based stereo algorithms, most research on 3D face model is based on correlation stereo algorithms, even though these algorithms are often time-consuming. We present a fast 3D face reconstruction algorithm using isoluminance lines from stereo images, which is effective even when only a few edges can be detected. We also introduced very efficient algorithm do search for irises in 3D space, which can then be used to identify the face position and direction. Our experiments show that our 3D facial model is suitable for 3D face recognition.","PeriodicalId":110347,"journal":{"name":"Second International Conference on 3-D Digital Imaging and Modeling (Cat. Like many recent registration techniques, our Robust-Closest-Patch algorithm (RCP) iteratively matches model patches to data surfaces based on the current pose and then re-estimates pose based on these matches. RCP has several novel features: 1) online registration is driven by low curvature patches computed from the model offline; 2) an approximate normal distance between a patch and a surface is used, avoiding the need to estimate local surface normal and curvature from noisy data; 3) pose is solved exactly by a linear system in six parameters, using a symmetric formulation of the rotation constraint; 4) robustness is ensured using an M-estimator that estimates both the rigid pose parameters and the error standard deviation. Results are shown using models and range data from turbine blade inspection.","PeriodicalId":110347,"journal":{"name":"Second International Conference on 3-D Digital Imaging and Modeling (Cat. Instead of estimating a quadric surface individually, the approach fits all the surfaces captured in the scene together, taking into account the geometric relationships between them and their specific characteristics. The technique is compared with other methods through experiments performed on real objects.","PeriodicalId":110347,"journal":{"name":"Second International Conference on 3-D Digital Imaging and Modeling (Cat. This algorithm was previously shown to be effective in view registration of general surfaces and in object recognition from 3D model databases. We describe extensions to the basic matching algorithm which will enable it to address several challenging and often overlooked problems encountered with real data. First, we describe extensions that allow us to deal with data sets with large variations in resolution and with large data sets for which computational efficiency is a major issue. The applicability of the enhanced matching algorithm is illustrated by an example application: the construction of large terrain maps and the construction of accurate 3D models from unregistered views. Second, we describe extensions that facilitate the use of 3D object recognition in cases in which the scene contains a large amount of clutter (e.g., the object occupies 1% of the scene) and in which the scene presents a high degree of confusion (e.g., the model shape is close to other shapes in the scene). Those last two extensions involve learning recognition strategies from the description of the model and from the performance of the recognition algorithm using Bayesian and memory based learning techniques, respectively.","PeriodicalId":110347,"journal":{"name":"Second International Conference on 3-D Digital Imaging and Modeling (Cat. The geometric models and the texture data are obtained separately: the models are built from range data while the texture information is obtained from 2D color images of the scene. The system does not make any assumption on the way the texture data has been acquired. Texture selection results are presented for an indoor scene.","PeriodicalId":110347,"journal":{"name":"Second International Conference on 3-D Digital Imaging and Modeling (Cat. In many cases a CAD model is available at the time of inspection. We present a method for the automatic generation of scanning paths for 3D line laser scanners based on CAD models. Since normally a single scanning pass cannot cover a whole part, a slicing method is developed to divide the surface of a CAD model into a number of sections such that each section can be covered by a single scanning pass. For each section, a path can be generated to follow the surface contour, and the combination of paths for all the sliced sections forms a complete scan of an object. The method has been tested to show that the paths generated can be used to effectively control the laser scanner to follow the contour of the part surface.","PeriodicalId":110347,"journal":{"name":"Second International Conference on 3-D Digital Imaging and Modeling (Cat. The scan heads are very simple, and we believe that the scanner could be built for less than $10 K. We then describe a simple model for the lower body consisting of two stacks of ellipses, and an algorithm for fitting this model to the points and silhouettes produced by the scanner. We outline a way of extracting body dimensions from this model and discuss in detail our method to determine a subject's crotch level, a rather difficult problem. Finally, we present simulation results on the expected accuracy of the body dimensions, obtained by means of a scanner simulator.","PeriodicalId":110347,"journal":{"name":"Second International Conference on 3-D Digital Imaging and Modeling (Cat.
