The effect of the chopper output ripple current on the input harmonics is included. These generalized curves can be used to determine the input filter component ratings as well as to compute the harmonics injected into the source. Using harmonic superposition, the input current and voltage waveforms as a function of time are determined and thus the peak voltages and current stresses are obtained. A practical example illustrates the use of the curves and serves to verify the analysis.","PeriodicalId":109541,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics and Control Instrumentation","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1981-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128821090","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Practical efficiencies as high as 95 percent and regulation as low as 0.02 percent are easily achieved with a little extra circuitry. To illustrate the scheme, a model ac regulator was built to deliver 90-W output power in a 137-¿ resistive load at Vo = 111 V rms at 50 Hz from an input source fluctuating between Vin = 115 to 140 V rms. The overall efficiency when the input is at the lower limit is 96.5 percent and the efficiency drops to 79.3 percent when the input is on the higher limit giving an average efficiency of 88 percent. The output voltage varies only by 0.1 V rms for a 25-V input fluctuation thus giving a regulation of 0.4 percent. In addition to the many applications as voltage stabilizers in television sets, refrigerators, and small motors, etc., this scheme is most suited as a general control element in many systems as temperature controller and speed controller, etc.","PeriodicalId":109541,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics and Control Instrumentation","volume":"134 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1981-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133698853","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The analysis is based on the first-harmonic approximation of distorted by triac voltage waveforms and concerns the case where the motor is driven by two quadrature voltages one of which is controlled by a triac. As an extension to the above analysis, the unusual case in which the motor is driven by two in-phase voltages with the triac acting on one-phase winding, is also considered. For this case of motor driving, it is pointed out that a torque is developed in motor due to voltage phase shifting caused by triac nonlinear action. This could be perhaps of value for specially designed motors which would provide the ability of using triacs instead of capacitors for quadrature voltage production and torque generation.","PeriodicalId":109541,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics and Control Instrumentation","volume":"18 5","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1981-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114016531","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
